Tamarind House means different things to the people who have already experienced its beauty and legendary hospitality.
The rare luxury of space and privacy. Room to relax, to breathe, to rejuvenate and dream. Happy memories of drinks and laughter under the tamarind tree. Long white curtains billowing in the breeze. Swimming in the pool under a full moon. Bouganvillea climbing the walls - fuchsia, violet and orange flowers set against a clear blue sky Rum cocktails and fish cakes at sunset.
Tamarind House is located just off the Anse Chastanet Road approximately 1.5 miles from Soufriere and .5 miles from Anse Chastanet Beach. It is a 10 minute walk down to the beach and a 20 minute hike back up the hill. Covering 8850 Sq. Ft. of space, the house is constructed of local stone with exceptionally high 25 foot ceilings and Barbados terracotta tiles throughout. The main house has three bedrooms and bathrooms while the separate Cottage is a master bedroom suite with its own living room, kitchen, dressing area, four poster king size bed and terrace.
The 35 x 15 foot totally private pool is situated below the Cottage and has 1060 sq ft of terrace and shade pavilion around it. The pool edge is open on one side to give uninterrupted views of the Pitons. The house also has a professional size tennis court with a Bioflex surface and of course superb views of the Pitons as you play.
In the main house, a descending staircase leads you into a cool, circular courtyard filled with banana plants and flowers. As you pass through the graceful stone arch doorway, the enormous 2550 sq ft living room stretches away before you and leads to the terrace where the tamarind tree grows up out of the tiles. This fabulous tree provides shade and coolness to the house all through the day. The living room features two seven foot settees and a very large travertine stone coffee table. The round reproduction antique dining table seats 6-8.
The master bedroom has a beautiful king size four poster bed, side tables, hand carved standing cheval mirror and small armoire. There is a walk in closet with a safe, Italian tiled bathroom with shower and double sinks. Open the shower doors and look at the Pitons while bathing! The second bedroom has a queen antique four poster bed, private terrace, Italian tiled bathroom with shower also open to the view. There is a walk in closet and two blue and white Chinese lamps beside the bed. The third bedroom is for children and has two four poster beds, a double and a twin. It looks out onto a private terrace and the courtyard. The Cottage master bedroom suite has three graceful stone arch openings and 25 foot ceilings. Long white curtains at each doorway billow out in the breeze. Two large 7 foot couches with blue and white cushions, a large coffee table and antique tables beside the king size four poster bed make this a wonderfully romantic space. A collection of paintings by St. Kitts artist Kate Spencer are on display here. There is a marble tiled bathroom with shower and a dressing area plus a kitchen with fridge, stove, glasses, plates etc. Exceptionally high quality 100% cotton sheets, and plush towels are standard in all the bedrooms and bathrooms. Each bedroom has a hair dryer provided. Electricity is 220 volts. Staff included six days a week Monday - Saturday for cooking and cleaning. My sisters have declared this "Best Vacation Ever!!". Thank you for sharing your beautiful house and country with us. Cheryl, Ann, and Zelia were so kind to us, and the food they cooked was delicious! Words cannot describe the view no matter how many adjectives I try, but my sister Roxanne kept looking out and saying "nope, still not tired of it." You could stay here forever and never tire of staring at this beautiful scene. Happy New Year! and Thank you so much.
I have deliberately waited for over four months before writing this review. I wanted it to be objective. I was afraid if I did this too soon after the trip, my words would be influenced by emotions that may not have reflected the true experience at Tamarind House. Nothing has changed in regard to my thoughts. This was the most wonderful place I have ever had the pleasure to experience.
Nancy's concierge, Shermika, met us at the airport and accompanied us to the house. It is a rather treacherous (but thankfully short) drive from Soufriere to Tamarind House. The moment you get out of the car, you are greeted with a fabulous view of the Caribbean Sea. And it only gets better. The home is nestled on a hillside, completely secluded from neighbor’s eyes. The staff, Cheryl, Ann and Paul, take care of every need. The most difficult thing I had to do all week was decide what meals to have prepared for us.
Spectacular is not superlative enough to describe this property. I felt like we were truly in paradise. The layout of the home is designed to give ultimate views while affording privacy. The foliage was tropical, lush and exquisitely beautiful. We had the house and the cottage to ourselves (our son and his girlfriend joined us) and spent seven glorious days just relaxing, swimming, playing tennis, playing word games and board games, watching cruise ships and hummingbirds, reading, napping, laughing, crying, teasing, eating, drinking, watching falling stars at night (the sky is amazing - the stars look close enough to touch). We were able to let go of the fear and stress we had been struggling with for the last five months and just enjoy each others company.
The pictures on the website cannot convey the heart and soul of this house. All of our meals were on the covered deck looking out over the Caribbean Sea, acres of lush foliage, and a magnificent view of the Pitons. The sunrise peeking over the hilltops, morning rain showers, rainbows, hummingbirds, geckos – all of this and seeing it as we enjoyed a lavish breakfast with French pressed coffee, pancakes, eggs, bacon, fresh fruit and bread.
The winds gently stirring the plants, night sounds from the jungle-like surroundings, birds calling to one another, sporadic rain showers with stunning rainbows, and luscious fragrances from the foliage. If you want a place that can truly heal your soul while filling your mind with spectacular images that will last a lifetime, this is it.
We just came back from a week at Tamarind House and can confirm that all that has been said about the place is absolutely true. The house itself is truly unique, lots of wide open spaces and amazing architecture. Built not so long ago, it has a unique old Caribbean feel to it. Large airy rooms make you feel like you are part of the incredible scenery outside. With views overlooking beautiful flowers and trees, the Pitons, the sea, a gorgeous sunset, sitting on the deck at anytime is like watching a giant IMAX nature movie. We particularly enjoyed the pool early in the AM, and at dusk when the light was spectacular. Playing tennis in front of the Pitons is also a special experience. Everything was as advertised, Easy to find and well organized. Shermika the house manager was most helpful. Ann and Cheryl the housekeepers were amazing cooks and took all the stress off any food shopping and cooking. Let them cook away, they know what they're doing. Great beach 5min drive at Anse Chastenet, We used 'Feel Good" Water Taxi, Daniel Abraham (# at the house) will take you to fantastic snorkeling sites at reasonable rates. Also ate at Boucan Chocolate Restaurant and Orlandos in Soufriere, very good, Note, road to house is intimidating at first but you get used to it pretty quickly. Car handy but not really needed. Enjoy Tamarind House.
We just arrived home from our amazing week at tamarind house and wanted to let everyone know how amazingly special this place is -- the house is perfectly situated with the most spectacular views from every room and location in the house. The house is comfortable, open and really well designed so there was always a place for all to gather, or for you to go off and be alone. What makes this perfect house a real home is the staff, cheryl and ann and paul -- from the moment you enter, you are cared for -- the ladies are incredible cooks and keep a very clean house, and, while they are there for several hours a day, they are in no way intrusive. We had them shop for us and make amazing meals -- better than you will get at most places in the area, so we never really left the compound!! no need really! We had the most AMAZING massages from Maura (who came up to the house several days) and got some expert tennis lessons from Vernon -- both reasonably priced for the quality of their work. We have travelled around the world and never has there been a villa that we have flat out said "we need to come here every year because it is that special" -- tamarind house is that villa -- we will be booking every year from now on!!
Family vacation for 7 people(21-80).Listing very accurate, property spotless.Cost is very reasonable and far less than the island resorts. The pictures don't do it justice,on arrival;your stress melts away.Beautiful view, comfortable furniture and wonderful food. The help make Tamarind House a home,Ann and Cheryl were amazing. The house was always spotless, the food healthy/delicious.Fresh squeezed juice with every meal, homemade ice-cream each evening a wow chocolate cake. They are fantastic, never imposing and friendly.Ann always surprised us with each dish.Let her do her thing, no regrets. The girls shopped, a good decision. We were very well taken care of. My recommendations:When you receive the grocery list, add meat/foods for Mon/Tuesday.The girls are off on Sun & shop on Tues for the next meals. Let them shop, very tricky to do.They prepared dinner for each evening.Do not rent a car-the drivers(Popo and James)are experts, roads are tricky and cost reasonable, negotiate price first.Rental would be a headache. You can get anywhere and they are knowledgeable regarding St Lucia. There is a phone/internet in the house, resorts don't have either.Anse Chastanet, down the hill from Tamarind,is not worth the prices they charge. Tamarind is a luxury private resort. We walked down to the beach,20 min. but unless you are doing water activities, no need.Walking to town,be prepared for a climb back, doable. My son met with a trainer and tennis coach, both worthwhile. We did a few local attractions but in the end, staying at Tamarind, reading and relaxing, swimming in the pool and enjoying the views was worth every minute and penny. Can't wait to go back, just a wonderful relaxing vacation. There is a DVD player and enjoyed some movies/family time.Highly recommend this for a family reunion, there is a house next door that can accommodate 5 more. The piton climb is a challenge if your fit, go for it.The botanical gardens were a lovely walk and my 80 year old mom really enjoyed it, we all did. From there, we went to the mud bath and really had fun,mom was able to sit and enjoy the site.We went to one restaurant on Sunday evening,Orlando's. He is charming and the food was fantastic. On Friday we went to the local fish fry several towns away. The roads are bad and the island is poor, I would not suggest this unless you need a taste of reality. All the locals in Soufriere are lovely and hospitable, very safe and Paul was a wonderful caretaker.Just a perfect, beautiful spot.
I had the pleasure of spending a few nights at the lovely Tamarind House.. The cottage was tastefully furnished and very comfortable. There was plenty of room yet it was cosy too. There are chairs and a table just outside the cottage where you can sip your tea in the morning or indulge in some wine while taking in the gorgeous sun sets. This is an incredible property with breathtaking views and very comfortable surroundings. I had taken advantage of the pool and swam every morning. It was a refreshing way to start the day.
The property was very clean and well maintained. The housekeepers, Ann and Cheryl were very kind to me, preparing breakfast each morning and tidying up the cottage each day. They were lovely to speak with, as I thoroughly enjoyed our conversations.
Hope to be back at Tamarind House next year.
We are now coming to the end of a glorious ten days staying at Tamarind House. The house has exceeded our expectations in every respect. The views are spectacular (the most photographed on the island!) The rooms spacious and all with mosquito nets. On the hottest days a cool breeze wafts through the property which was a help for those of us who didn't want to soak up the sun. The house is 5 minutes from Anse Chastanet beach which has excellent snorkelling and safe waters, some of the best on the island. You do need a four wheel drive car to get the best from this property. The botanical gardens and sulphur baths just outside Soufriere are well worth a visit and the Saturday market in Soufriere is a great opportunity to see and buy local produce. Ann and Cheryl looked after our every need with fresh towels, delicious meals and an endless array of brilliant ice cream. Topped with rum and sitting on the terrace with a view of the Pitons - unforgetable! For the more energetic among us there was tennis and we all enjoyed the swimming pool - again a spectacular view. We can't wait to come back again!
Rain forest tours, mineral baths, waterfalls, massages in house, tennis coach, personal trainer. Rainforest walks can be arranged. Climb the Pitons, bathe in outdoor mineral baths, diving and snorkeling near by.
