Buying a beachfront property in the Caribbean has been a dream of mine for decades, to escape the Canadian winter conditions in my home city. After visiting a number of islands, I chose St. Maarten/St. Martin for its both its physical beauty and culture, offering a vast array of options for dining and nightlife, world-class shopping, or more peaceful activities like strolling secluded beaches. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner!
Our small and intimate gated property consists of 12 villas, one of which is occupied by our property manager, Jim Duke and his partner Gina. Having Jim and Gina on-site is incredibly convenient, and guests never fail to comment on what a asset they both are. Shopping, dining and activities in Philipsburg are all within walking distance, or Jim can arrange for a car rental for going further afield. Our neighbourhood is quiet at night, so that you can hear the sound of the waves on the beach, but dining and entertainment are accessible by foot or by car.
My favorite hideaway. I really enjoy staying at this Villa. Conveniently located a 5 minute walk from the centre of Philipsburg. Breathtaking view of Great Bay and the ability to do my own cooking, if I choose. With so many amazing restaurants on the island, why stay at an all-inclusive? This Villa has all the amenities and a corner store within walking distance. Beautifully furnished, very clean. bathrooms for each bedroom (2) and a guest bathroom downstairs. Perfect for us, especially when 4 women have to get ready for a night on the town. Wonderful people at the Villa and Josh the property manager is the greatest. Even had drinks ready for us when we arrived. We have rented at the Villas for 3 years now. Little piece of heaven.
We stayed for a week in May 2014. My sister and I have been to St. Maarten several times now,, but this was our first stay at Great Bay Villas. I will never stay anywhere else in St Maarten! The location is excellent, very close to the boardwalk in Phillipsburg so very convenient for restaurants and shopping even without a car. The villa was amazing. Fully equipped, clean, and very well maintained. I really loved the vaulted ceilings in the bedrooms. Jim and Gina were fantastic. They walked us through everything and assisted us with restaurants, shopping, etc. Thank you so much for sharing your little piece of paradise with us. We fully intend to book again when we are ready to return to St. Maarten in a year or so.
My husband and I stayed at Villa #3 from Dec 7, 2012 thru Jan 4, 2013.. Before renting, Victoria, the owner, and I emailed often. She was so very helpful in every way possible. She could not have been more accommodating to us. Jim and Gina, the villa managers were such kind friendly people. It was a joy talking to them every day. There was an array of shampoo, conditioners, sunscreen, etc for us to use as we wished. Many people had left theirs over time and Victoria was nice enough to leave it for others to use. She also had a wonderful combination of spices to cook with and condiments in the refrigerator. Little things like that can really add up and it was very generous for her to allow us to use them. Jim and Gina gave us a bottle of wine and snacks for our first night there. Victoria had books, magazines, ,DVD movies, and coupons for restaurants available. We were very grateful. We met people who lived there and we still keep in touch with them.
Philipsburg is a 5-10 minute walk from the villa. Several casinos are within walking distance as well. You can walk the streets or walk the beach. We felt safe at all times. There is a tiny grocery about a block away, within easy walking distance and the prices there are not that much more than the regular grocery stores…..where you need a car or a $20 cab fare to get you there and back. We did not rent a car while there, as parking is difficult at best in most areas, but only needed to make a phone call to a driver on call who would be there 5 min after we called him. There are many dining establishments available at all price ranges. One can do as much or as little as you like. The beach directly in front of the group of 12 villas was never crowded. There were kayaks available for our use. The pool and grounds were always clean and tidy and it is a gated community. The weather while we were there was between 78 and 86 degrees. It’s perfect year around. On a couple of days a nice rain would blow thru in about 5 minutes and then it was beautifully sunny the rest of the day.
We absolutely loved our stay there. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet, safe place to stay in Philipsburg. It is far enough from the nighttime music noise of the downtown area, yet close enough if you want to be where the action is.
Shopping, dining, dancing and casinos, all within easy walking distance, snorkeling and diving in the waters of Great Bay -- one of 22 beaches on the island -- with fishing, jet ski rentals, excursions to St, Barts and Anguilla, and deep sea fishing available nearby. French St Martin a short drive away, offering international dining, shopping, and other beautiful beaches, including shallow Galion Bay, perfect for small children (the famous Butterfly Farm is located there), and exquisite Baie Longue for strolling, beachcombing and quiet private picnics. Small grocery store 3 minutes walk from villa.
