We used this cabin as a base camp for daily skiing at Crystal Mountain. The proximity to the ski area is great, about 30 minutes from the time we left the cabin to the time we had the kids set up for their lessons.
I had brought all our food, but realized that I probably didn't have to when I saw the kitchen. There were many canned goods, a good supply of staples like flour and sugar, as well as incidentals such as hot chocolate and microwave popcorn. The cooking and serving supplies were adequate for six people, but we did run into seating issues one evening with our family of five invited another couple over to dinner. The table is really set up for six. Unless several of your diners are children, seating for more than that will be tight.
There is an extensive library of DVD and VHS movies with a nice mix of old and new, adult and children's movies. We didn't take advantage of the collection, having brought our own media, but we certainly didn't need to.
My only cautionary notes are that there isn't much storage for clothing. We put three boys in one room which didn't have a chest of drawers and had hangers for their ski pants, but nothing else. The other bedroom had a chest of drawers, but the drawers were all filled with various items, so we ended up storing our stuff in suitcases at the foot of the bed. Also, if you are a skier, there is nowhere to hang clothes that need drying out overnight. The washer and dryer, however are high capacity and well supplied with soap.
Finally, both my husband and I came to grief with the fireplace. This was completely our fault, but both of us had difficulty getting the fire started and going without creating a fair amount of smoke which vented into the living room. So sharpen your fire-building skills prior to arrival or expect everything to smell vaguely of smoke upon your return.
In sum, we had a great skiing vacation and a large part of that was a snug cabin to return to at the end of the day. I would highly recommend Sunny's.
Families with Teenagers,
Owner's Response: Hello Keeler Clan ~ Thank you for choosing Sunny's Heart Cozy Cabin. We are pleased that you noted the cabin is comfortable for 6, as we describe it "cozy" for that very reason.
And we will certainly address the clothing storage issue. There are drawers under the bed in the larger room that will accommodate a large # of items. We will move some books from the smaller room which will help that situation also. (thanks for the feedback!)
For anyone headed to the cabin looking to utilize the woodstove; your best course of action is to light paper/kindling and then push the woodstove door until it is almost closed, leaving a 1/2" or so open. This will create a vacuum effect, pulling air from the living room into the woodstove and forcing the smoke up the chimney (not into the cabin) When it is cold, the air inversion will push the smoke into the cabin instead of up the chimney, should you leave the door open. Closing the door all the way when starting the fire is ok, but you will need to pull out dampers on both sides (rod with a round knob at both sides of the stove, right near the door)
Thanks again for choosing Sunny's Heart. We look forward to hosting you and your family/friends in the future.
