BUYER BEWARE. I rented this property for what was supposed to be a relaxing Adirondack retreat with extended family. Instead, it was a renter's nightmare.
As the organizer of this mini family reunion, I was appalled when we arrived to mounds of trash littered around the house. There were piles of boxes, old chairs, and trash literally strewn around the disintegrating fire pit. It looked like a frat party had taken place there the night before. My husband, two daughters, and I frantically ran around in the dark, in the pouring down rain, trying to tidy up the place before the other families arrived. Little did we know that that was just the beginning of our troubles.
When we went inside, we were appalled to find the basement was flooded. After 5 or 6 conversations with the renters, we had arranged to pay $400 extra for the downstairs rooms so that a few extra family members could join us. The owners had mentioned that the walls had not been painted, but that they had moved furniture in, so the rooms should be usable....after all, they had already charged and accepted my payment for the rooms. Flooding aside, they weren't even remotely habitable. There were no doors or window coverings, only cold/bare concrete on the floors, and the beds and bedding were old, dirty, damp, and disgusting. PLUS, the owner had been there earlier to clean and had put a few fans over the flooding in an attempt to solve the problem. The rooms had pools of water, the bedding had soaked up the water, and it was a disaster.
Our next pending problem was figuring out what to do with my elderly parents when they arrived. I had many conversations with the renter about whether or not my parents could bring their small RV, and whether there would be a place to park it. The renters agreed it would be fine, and even offered plugs/outlets so that my folks would have electricity.
However, the renters failed to mention that the drive to the house was incredibly steep. In the rain, our van could not even make it out without several harrowing attempts. There was no way a RV could make it without killing someone! My parents had to park on the road and make their way up and down the treacherous, slippery, dangerous slope every day.
We were left outside in the rain wondering what in the world we should do. We would have given up and gone somewhere else if it hadn't been 10:00 pm and we knew it would be impossible to find another rental for several families in August!
