Long Lake is a quiet peaceful town in the heart of the Adirondacks. The lake is about 19 miles long. It is about 45 minutes to Lake Placid, the home of the Olympics, 45 minutes to Old Forge and Water Safari, and about 1 hour to Lake George and slightly farther to the Saratoga Race Track and the NYC Ballet. The Adirondack Museum and the Tupper Lake Childrens Museum are about 15 minutes. There is much to do in the town of Long Lake if you enjoy any of the water sports or hiking in the summer, or snowmobiling or skiing in the winter. Whiteface and Gore Mountain are a quick drive.

Golf: There is a full golf course just outside Indian lake about 22 miles away. Miniature golf can be played in long lake and also in old forge about 30 miles away. One of the biggest water parks, water safari, is also in old forge. There are country stores and antique stores throughout the Adirondacks. Sea plane rides are at the town beach in long lake with also a nice beach.

Ski: Whiteface mountain, an Olympic mountain, and gore mountain are both about 45 minutes away where skiing and snowboarding are at their best. Whiteface is in the town of lake placid and gore is in the town of north creek. Both are fun towns with great stores and restaurants. Lake placid also has an Olympic skating rink and dog sledding. Snowmobiling can be done in trails throughout the Adirondacks. Both mountains offer gondola rides in the summer with hiking and biking up the mountain as well.

BUYER BEWARE - do not waste your money- #1 of 3

1 of 5
Submitted: January 27, 2012 Stayed: August 2011
BUYER BEWARE. I rented this property for what was supposed to be a relaxing Adirondack retreat with extended family. Instead, it was a renter's nightmare.

As the organizer of this mini family reunion, I was appalled when we arrived to mounds of trash littered around the house. There were piles of boxes, old chairs, and trash literally strewn around the disintegrating fire pit. It looked like a frat party had taken place there the night before. My husband, two daughters, and I frantically ran around in the dark, in the pouring down rain, trying to tidy up the place before the other families arrived. Little did we know that that was just the beginning of our troubles.

When we went inside, we were appalled to find the basement was flooded. After 5 or 6 conversations with the renters, we had arranged to pay $400 extra for the downstairs rooms so that a few extra family members could join us. The owners had mentioned that the walls had not been painted, but that they had moved furniture in, so the rooms should be usable....after all, they had already charged and accepted my payment for the rooms. Flooding aside, they weren't even remotely habitable. There were no doors or window coverings, only cold/bare concrete on the floors, and the beds and bedding were old, dirty, damp, and disgusting. PLUS, the owner had been there earlier to clean and had put a few fans over the flooding in an attempt to solve the problem. The rooms had pools of water, the bedding had soaked up the water, and it was a disaster.

Our next pending problem was figuring out what to do with my elderly parents when they arrived. I had many conversations with the renter about whether or not my parents could bring their small RV, and whether there would be a place to park it. The renters agreed it would be fine, and even offered plugs/outlets so that my folks would have electricity.

However, the renters failed to mention that the drive to the house was incredibly steep. In the rain, our van could not even make it out without several harrowing attempts. There was no way a RV could make it without killing someone! My parents had to park on the road and make their way up and down the treacherous, slippery, dangerous slope every day.

We were left outside in the rain wondering what in the world we should do. We would have given up and gone somewhere else if it hadn't been 10:00 pm and we knew it would be impossible to find another rental for several families in August!

Beautiful Lake

3 of 5
Submitted: August 14, 2011 Stayed: July 2011
My wife and four kids rented in July and let me say we loved Long Lake. The lake itself is beautiful and fun to boat on, and the little town, which is very near the cottage, had everything anyone could need for a stay in the Adirondacks.

Regarding the cottage itself, I believe at some point it will be quite nice, but I feel it was overpriced as it stands now. It is clear the owners are in the process of renovating parts of the house, but it isn't done yet. The kitchen was apparently redone recently as it didn't match the pictures on the website, and it is very nice, but it wasn't particularly clean when we arrived. There was grease on the counters as if someone had been cooking bacon and we had to clean before we were comfortable putting food on the counters (and the owner charges a significant cleaning fee). We used the gas grill only once as it caught on fire, apparently due to all of the old food and grease built up on it. There are other small problems throughout the house that aren't noticeable at first glance, but that became annoying. For instance, several of the casement window handlles were broken and I cut myself trying to open one, there were no screens on the downstairs doors and the screen on the sliding door on the second floor barely operated without falling off the track. Also, the one shower in the house was in a bathtub that wouldn't drain without holding the drain open the entire time.

I will say the property was very private which was nice, and the owners provided row and paddle boats which the kids enjoyed.

Finally, anyone renting this property should understand it is a bit of a hike from the beach and dock area (which I will say is quite nice) to the cottage. Definitely not a place for older individuals who are unsteady or out of shape. Also, the general condition of the driveway is not particularly good and while this can be common in the Adirondacks, potential renters should be aware it is very steep at points.

In summary, we have rented a number of times at various lakes in the Adirondacks and this property is definitely nicer than others we have rented, but I do not think the current condition of the property warrants the rental asking price.
