Overview

Hilo House Rental Photos and Description

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 2

Aloha and welcome to Mika Mizu, serenity in Hilo. Here you will experience a unique and memorable Hawaiian vacation. Mika Mizu is a spacious, but cozy one bedroom cottage, all on one level, no steps! We suggest 2 guests but it will accommodate up to 3. This beautiful cottage is located in a soothing and natural setting on an estate with two waterfalls and abundant flora and fauna. It is less than one mile to historic downtown Hilo, yet you feel far removed. The cottage is stocked with amenities such as spices and cooking staples in an efficiency kitchen with a full size refrigerator, a built-in 2-burner stovetop, a microwave/convection oven, a toaster and a gas BBQ grill for outdoor cooking. Also provided are both high speed internet/WiFi and cable TV. It has been tastefully furnished in a casually elegant Island style, creating a very congenial ambiance for your comfort and enjoyment. At these extremely low rates, you will be amazed at this wonderful vacation find.

Hilo is the second largest city in the Hawaiian Islands. There is a four-year University of Hawaii campus in Hilo, several fine restaurants, a Tsunami museum, and interesting events occurring at all times of the year. The natural beauty of the area is astounding. Many waterfalls, nature hikes, boogie boarding, surfing, botanical gardens, and scenic drives through rainforests are all nearby. Volcano National Park is approximately 45 minutes away. Kailua-Kona, the tourist area of the Big Island, with its many high-end Kohala Coast hotels, is one and a half hours away. Waimea, the paniolo (cowboy) region of Parker Ranch fame is approximately one hour. The Waipio Valley and its lovely lookout is one hour. You can take helicopter rides over this taro-filled valley with its dramatic cliffs that plunge to the sea. You can do the same if you wish to see what our very active Kilaeua Volcano is up to. And Mauna Kea, our gigantic mountain with its world renowned Keck Observatory, might be snow capped while you are here - quite the sight looking up from the shores of the blue Pacific.

Note: Mika Mizu is not appropriate for children under 6 years

About JAMIE PHILLIPS

We met in Hawaii, fell in love in Hawaii....and the rest is history. Now we get to share our good fortune with guests from around the world.

Why JAMIE PHILLIPS chose Hilo

We are happy to have this wonderful cottage in Hawaii, and we love the Big Island, its many sights and its friendly people. Hilo gives one the chance to get a feel of the real Hawaii. The Farmers Market in town is a profusion of color from the many exotic flowers, fruits, and native crafts. One comes away with one comes away with a special feeling after exploring this unique area.

What makes this house unique

Great price for a beautifully furnished, comfortable and spacious cottage, located right in Hilo. Easy to get to many of the Big Island sights, lots to do and see.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a wonderful and peaceful retreat from the cold and snow of Kansas City. Very appreciative of all the comforts and details.

Perfect Hilo Hideaway

  • 5 of 5
Mika Misu is a quiet, charming getaway close enough for a leisurely walk into downtown Hilo (about a mile) and full of wonderful and welcome touches. There's a surprise welcome basket of Hawaiian goodies, wifi, a deck, and your own private waterfall!

Everything is clean and well cared for and perfectly described in the posting - didn't need a thing. We appreciated how attentive the owners were to providing instructions and clear directions. We were looking for an alternative to a hotel, and when we come back to Hilo, we're planning on returning to Mika Misu and you should too!

Delightful paradise retreat

  • 5 of 5
At the end of a road of lovely homes and cottages you drive down a long drive to Mika Mizu and step into a perfect environment to enjoy a stay while exploring the east side of the island. A welcoming basket of Hawaiian goodies and the jungle sounds of chirping frogs and birds offers a treat to the senses and the warmth of welcome and promise of relaxation. We loved the balcony overlooking the beautiful vegetation and found the private pond and waterfall a unique hideaway to indulge in. Exceeded our expectations in every way!

Gorgeous jungle retreat, great value!!!

  • 5 of 5
The house is full of lovely artistic touches, the lanai opens onto a gorgeous jungle ravine, and the neighborhood is one of the older, more charming areas of Hilo.

The perfect mix of civilization and nature retreat.

I've worked with other rent-by-owners on Kona side and in San Diego, and they weren't exactly professional. But the owners of Mika Mizu are both warm and professional--available if something goes wrong, but not intrusive or demanding.

This is my best rent-by-owner experience, and I hope to return one day soon!

A very special place!

  • 5 of 5
This was my ninth trip to Hawaii and my first time staying in Hilo. Mika Mizu has to rate as one of the top two of all the places I have stayed. The location is what makes it. From the feeling of being in a secluded rainforest while inside the beautiful house, then just being 5 minutes from Hilo's sweet downtown area and access to all major roadways, Mika Mizu is a gem. I travelled with my 78 year old mother who was as enchanted as I was! Although she didn't venture down to see the property's waterfall, I did and it was just icing on the cake. In Hilo, we especially enjoyed the Farmer's Market and the friendly patrons. We also took a ride in a Blue Hawaiian helicopter to see the volcano and waterfalls. What an amazing trip! Jamie was especially helpful and made us feel like family! I hope one day soon to return with my husband or my mom!! I would stay here again in a second.

What a new experience in the paradise rainforest.

  • 5 of 5
We had the best experience at Mika Mizu even though we were not far from the town of Hilo we were hidden away in paradise. Very clean, well stocked and accommodating. Beautiful home with plenty of room. The sounds of the birds, frogs ec. is an experience everyone should discover. We were very comfortable!!! Many pictures and memories to share with family and friends.

Perfect Vacation!

  • 5 of 5
Mika Mizu was the perfect place for our stay in Hilo. It was close to the Falls at Reed's Island, where my sister and her family stayed. The cottage had every amenity we needed, including a washer and dryer (with laundry soap and dryer sheets), and a propane grill. The hosts even provided a welcome basket with kona coffee and local snacks.

Although the cottage was literally in the rainforest, it was only a short drive to town. We found the Safeway had fairly reasonable prices for groceries and wine. There was also a Target and Walmart nearby, as well as a mall (Tip - try the freshly made malasadas at Zippy's Neapolitan Bakery in the food court of the mall - yum!!!).

We had beautiful weather the week we stayed, so we didn't actually spend much time in the cottage, other than sleeping, but we did appreciate the library of books and DVDs. The guidebooks for Hawaii were especially helpful in planning our day trips. Our adventures included visiting Volcanoes National Park, Rainbow Falls, Boiling Pots, Akaka Falls, the Black Sand Beach, the Green Sand Beach, snorkeling in some tide pools, swimming in a "warm" pool, and driving to/from Kona to attend a Luau via Saddle Road.

Our only "complaint" would be the lack of fine dining in the Hilo vicinity. The night before my sister's wedding, we went to dinner at the Hilo Bay Cafe, and were a bit disappointed with the service and the food. Ken's Pancake House actually provided the best meals and at fairly reasonable prices, but it's not really the kind of place you'd go to for a rehearsal dinner.

Overall, we had a wonderful vacation and if we ever went back to Hilo, we wouldn't hesitate to stay in Mika Mizu again!
