This private shoreline cottage from the 1960s is at the end of a quiet lane on the mill pond of the Little Wolf River about two miles from the center of Manawa in the rolling farmlands of Waupaca County.
There is fishing right off the private pier: northern pike, perch, bass, bluegills, crappies, pumpkin fish and the occasional brown trout. This area has great spots for the fish to hide in.
Two bedrooms with plenty of room in closets and dressers for your belongings, an orthopaedic memory-foam queen bed & a new queen, hardwood flooring, a comfortable living-room with leather couches, new HD-TV, games, cards, and a fully-equipped kitchen with new appliances and a dining area will help to make you feel right at home.
Get away from the hustle and bustle for awhile. Bring your binoculars to watch the birds. Cardinals, king-fishers, woodpeckers, nuthatches and chickadees live here and so do sand-hill cranes, Canadian geese and squirrels. You can take the portable fire pit and the camping chairs into the yard, lounge in the hammocks (1 double, 1 single) or settle in at the campfire site close to the water. Have fun and see some of the open countryside on the twin 3-speed cruiser bikes. Bring your snowmobile in winter and use the miles of trails in the area; access them right at the pond. Watch the sun rise over the lake across the expansive level yard from the house and porch through the old-stand trees.
I am lucky to have a great care-taker who lives next door and watches over the house through all the seasons. This makes the cottage available for use all year 'round. He is a great fisherman who can swear by this private part of the pond as a fisherman's hideaway spot both summer and winter.

A fifth-generation California resident who lost her heart to Switzerland would not normally have a cottage in rural Wisconsin but this is special. I live in Chur, Switzerland, and see my family in California about once a year. I have visited Manawa quite a few times to see where my good friend grew up.
Charlene Brunner purchased this cottage in 2005
When my friend showed me the area where she was raised, I was smitten with the beautiful farms, woodlands and lake areas...but especially with the quaint little ranch-style cottage I found there on the quiet man-made lake called Manawa Mill Pond. The 1-plus acre yard around the house with old-stand trees provides it with plenty of privacy and peacefulness, especially because of the 400-yard lake-shore access. There is no traffic because at the end of this country cul-de-sac lane.
This cottage gives vactioners a chance to spend time in an absolutely quiet place away from home. I recently had the opportunity to visit the cottage and loved the feeling of security and seclusion it gave me. Bird-watching, fishing, some swimming and barbecuing, but also reading and painting here are the highlights.
I have enjoyed the Mid-Western Rodeo in Manawa in July and have seen some of the old cars that are shown at the Iola Car Show.
Green Bay is worth a trip for many reasons. The Wisconsin Dells, too.
I furnished the cottage in 2005 from some of the local stores but especially from the antique shops in New London and Waupaca. For antique lovers there is also the big Osh Kosh show.
Manawa is a convenient distance from the Outagamie Airport in Appleton and not a bad drive from Chicago, where I can enjoy the Windy City before taking off to Switzerland or California.
My husband & I (and our dog, Roscoe) mixed business & pleasure and escaped to this wonderful little Piece of Heaven here on earth to celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary and to facilitate his proximity to Bear Creek, WI. What a pleasant surprise awaited us at the end of quiet cul-de-sac in the quaint little town of Maniwa. The cottage is clean and has all of the amenities that you could ask for. Our first morning greeted us with a picture perfect sunrise over the pond, complete with a birder's-dream-come-true, as there were many species not normally seen, except during migration season. Next, we saw a hen turkey, who was tending to her daily routine of checking out the property. From the driveway to the end of Pond Street is 1 mile and Roscoe & I enjoyed daily walks through the pleasant neighborhood. On one of our day outings, the three of us went in search of cheese factories & found four in the immediate area. We couldn't decide on what to bring home for souvenirs, so we brought home a variety of cheeses to share with family & friends. The next day we walked the Sturgeon Trail & happened upon the St. Patrick's Day parade in New London. What fun!
I guess the long & short of it is that if you want to just stay put, the cottage certainly lends it's self to that. If you do like to explore, the cottage is perfectly situated for that, as well.
We found our stay much too short & hope to have the opportunity to return.
A very comfortable, well-stocked house in a great location. We loved the quiet! The neighbors were very nice and my 7-year-old spent a lot of time learning to ride a 2-wheeler on the quiet cul de sac. There is easy access to nearby towns with good farmers' markets. We spent two days tubing on the Wolf River (New London) and Crystal River (Waupaca). Although the water levels were low, we managed to get through each one.
We had almost-perfect weather and saw lots of wildlife around the house (not including the geese!) – a doe and her fawn running through the yard, a painted turtle laying her eggs, and a little brown bat snoozing on our storm door one day (we timed it perfectly to see him wake up, stretch and take off). Our dogs enjoyed chasing the geese into the pond several times a day; after a few days, the geese learned.
The owner is very accommodating and quick to respond. The caretaker next door, Jay, is friendly and helpful and so nice to have him next door. Thank you, Charlene, for a wonderful getaway! We'll be back someday.
We stayed at the cottage for a long weekend to do some fishing and relax. The yard was so cozy and had great access to the pond. We did some fishing from shore and took the rowboat out to explore the pond/river some and had some great success with bluegills. The kitchen was perfect to clean and fry up our dinner. And the firepit was great to sit around in the evening and watch the storms roll in. Very comfortable and convenient.
I had the pleasure of staying at this wonderful little cottage for an entire week. The cottage has everything you will need to have a comfortable stay. The kitchen provides you with pots, pans, bowls, knives for chopping and cutting, serving utensils, and anything you will need to prepare your meals. When we were there, there were 2 cranes with two babies, and the flock of geese had 26 babies!! We counted them..they were very cute cruising around the pond. We had great fishing right off the dock. It seems the northern love to hang out not too far off the dock. We caught and released about 14 over the week, it was great fun. My dog and a squirrel had a stare down. Being from the city, my dog had no idea what to do about this squirrel that was not the least bit intimidated by him and continued to stant his ground under the huge pine tree. It was a good laugh anyway. I would recommend this cottage for anyone who want to relax and just hangout and watch nature. t
Thanks so much Charlene for allowing us to experience that peacefulness.
It was a 'privilege staying here. It was absolutely wonderful and relaxing. It was a good idea to get feedback in a log book. I had read the older book also and saw numerous entries about the peacefulness and relaxation. That first night I experienced the peacefulness, which was awesome. We live on a very, very busy highway with thunderous noise from trucks, so you bet we truly enjoyed the peace and quiet!
I could live there, easily, just listening to all the birds and watching the wildlife. Our first night we saw 4 deer go across the front yard. I sat by the fire watching the flames dance and listening to all the wonderful sounds of nature. For a couple days I was quite entertained by 2 little rabbits chasing each other in circles. It was so cute. Yesterday we were watching a small owl parade across the water front. My hubby thought it may have fallen out of the nest as too young to fly. We watched it and it watched us.
Our grandson truly enjoyed the swing set and had a ball, and we got tired out pushing him! You even had some kid dishes, which were a bonus. We all fished, but were disappointed as we thought we'd have a fish dinner one night, but didn't have much for a catch. HINT - We weren't fishing deep enough. We now have learned more about the pond as well as other areas. Your neighbors were very nice and helpful. There will be a next time for us and cannot wait to go back.
As I said, it was more than expected and very comfortable, and really look forward to going back someday. We really wanted to squeeze another day in! Wish the weather would have been glorious, but were thankful to have had the sun and warmth we did. Of course there was sun the day we left!
If you don't leave here more refreshed, you need to be outside more and/or leave technology off OR at home!
Stayed at this lovely cottage with my 87 year old mother, sister, and niece for a "Girls-Get-Away" weekend. The cottage is not fancy, but has everything you need for a quiet weekend. Beds were comfortable and there were plenty of blankets and towels. Kitchen is well stocked with utensils and everything you need to make your own meals. Jason came over for a quick visit to let us know that he was nearby should we need anything. He was extremely nice and helpful. Enjoyed the bikes and being able to park in the garage. View from all windows is lovely.
Private ice fishing & river fishing nearby. Snowmobilers have access to trails from the pond.
