This remote portion of Maine is called the Sunrise Coast because the region is first in America to see the morning sun. Eastport is an artist's colony located on Moose Island and easily accessible by a causeway to the mainland. Look across the bay at Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's summer home. Other historic sites to visit are the Burnham Tavern in Machias and the Ruggles House in Columbia Falls. Not to be missed are East Quoddy Head Light on Campobello and West Quoddy Head Light in Lubec.

Memorable Retreat

The week I spent at the cottage was quiet, interesting, filled with natural sites and artistic interest of Eastport. Walking paths flank the village and downtown is minutes away on foot. Excellent music and food are available at the local restaurants and the neighbors are pleasant and friendly. The cottage is well-suited to a private retreat or small family get-away. Everything I needed was already there, so I was prepared to host the owners one nite. Nice views and small adventures surround Eastport. I highly recommend this rental.

The description and pictures of the property almost do it justice, perched on a tidal bluff, just a short walk to town, this place is hard to beat for it's view. Life is very laid back in Eastport, so leave your cares at home and enjoy this very well-maintained property. Check out the Iris Cafe for a great breakfast and the Chowder House at the other end of town for excellent lobster and clams. The owner, Meg, is extremely helpful and knowledgable of the area and draws great maps. This area is unique for its extreme tidal changes,,,nothing like it.

Downeast Cottage

Nicely renovated and comfortable old house right on the water. The house is very clean and the kitchen is well equipped (2 lobster pots!). Watch the tide go in and out from the deck or through the large windows. We saw lots of lobster boats, some kayaks and sailboats. The cottage is a 2 minute walk from the fishmonger's and 5 to the village. We took the ferries to Deer island and Campobello island (F.D. Roosevelt summer cottage, hiking trails, lighthouses) and there are whale watching and fishing tours offered in the village. The description is accurate.
