Photos and Description of the Huddleston vacation house rental
3BR,2FB Lakefront Vacation Rental Huddleston, Virginia, sleeps 6, Smith Mountain

Welcome to Cedar Key Village at Smith Mountain Lake. This spectacular all Cedar Lodge is located on beautiful and is one of eleven homes nestled in a secluded no wake cove. We have one of the easiest access to the lake for those who have walking issues as you can drive directly to the waterfront, just a 30 second drive. Also you can walk the road or take the steps down to the waterfront. The walk down the steps to the waterfront is surrounded by beautiful gardens on both sides, please see the pictures.

Because the cove is “no wake” you can swim, kayak and canoe without being disturbed by jet skies and motor boats, a rarity on the lake. We are only a 500' to the entrance to the main channel so you have go far before you can produce a wake. The cove is surrounded by a 2000 acre wildlife mountainous nature preserve so your views are of deep woods, silhouetted by Smith Mountain and its surrounding mountains. Smith Mountain Lake has 22,000 acres of clean water and has 500 miles of shoreline.

There is a mile long drive to reach our Lodge that is just magical. It is deeply wooded with an abundance of hardwoods on both sides, not a home in sight. Once you have made this turn on our lane, you will be delighted with the serine, natural beauty that surrounds our home.

Our recently renovated gorgeous home features a gourmet kitchen with granite counter tops and Tuscany styled charming maple cabinets, a large great room with cathedral ceilings and an incredibly beautiful floor to ceiling stone fireplace. Our one level home’s main living area is totally open so if you are in the kitchen, you are not isolated from the other guests. Cedar beams throughout the house adds a unique charm to this beautifully decorated and inviting home. All the furniture is extremely comfortable and cozy. We added an additional sun room featuring a panoramic wall of glass sun room provides breathtaking views of the lake and mountains from anywhere in the living area.

We offer three bedrooms and two full baths. The master bath has an over-sized custom tiled shower with three shower heads. The other bath offers a Jacuzzi tub. The cabinets are all rich maple with granite counter tops. The guest bedroom has a sliding glass door to the deck, which offers a fantastic view of the lake and Smith Mountain… what a way to wake up each morning.

Amenities include a 45 inch HD Sony TV, surround sound speakers and outdoor speakers, great for entertainment on our over sized trek deck. We live in the house for several months of the years so the house is appointed with every pot and pan, dish and glass wear imaginable. Many of our guests has told us it is far better equipped than their own homes. We also provide an array of spices.

The deck has two tables, lots of chairs, a hammock, and is surrounded by a basket s of flowers. There is a mature oak tree next to the deck and it’s gracefully limbs provides wonderful shade from early spring thru the fall. The deck’s view of the lake and the mountains is simply breathtaking. There is a lower level patio as well that has another table and chairs for six and a charcoal barbeque. We have a boat slip with two private docks, perfect for lots of fun water entertainment. It is 20 ' deep off our dock.

Our no wake 60 acres cove is famous for its abundance and variety of fish. It is where the strippers spawn every year and fisherman catch bass, muskies and cat fish right off our docks. You will see an exciting array of wild life including eagles, owls, ospreys, humming birds, wild turkey and of course deer but we also have several albino deer which are spectacular to see if you are lucky.

Ideally located in southwest Virginia's mountain foothills, our Lodge setting balances the beauties of landscape, mountains and lake with tranquility and recreational pursuits for a perfect vacation. Each season offers delights for the senses. Spring brings beautiful mountain laurels, azaleas, and dogwoods. Summers are lush with the aroma of heavy woods and an array of flower blossoms. Crape myrtles surround our property in late summer bursting our gardens with a variety of color. Autumn paints the landscape in burning brush strokes of red, gold, and orange. Each season is unique. Each a part of the beauty that surrounds our Lodge

Quiet, serene, beautiful -- a fresh adventure in the leisure life awaits you. Pick your pleasure. Maybe it's a romantic winter weekend. Or a family designed dip into summer water sports. An autumn escape to see Smith Mountain on fire with ever changing colors. Or spring's first battle with the bass and muskies. No matter, you will find them all.

Special: 50% off Green Fees at a Robert Trent Jones designed golf course just ten minutes down the road. The Mariners Landing golf course is o in the same community as the Point Restaurant which is renown on the lake as one of the top lakefront restaurants. They also have lots of fun entertainment over the summer and fall months so make sure you look them up.

Rent all types of boats at nearby marinas and enjoy parasailing, water skiing, sailing, water-skiing, jet skiing, canoeing, kayaking and for those with a large crowd you will love the huge pontoon boats. Our no-wake cove is perfect for kayaking, canoeing, and swimming. No worries of being run over by the jet skis or speed boats.

Our mile long drive into the property is perfect for long walks or biking. You will listen to only the sounds of nature as a beautiful hardwood forest hugs both sides of the road. Dear and turkey abound! Also if you like mountain biking, you are only a few minutes away.

There are lots of funs restaurants close by and the state park is just ten minutes away. The park offers summer fun programs for children at their camp pavilion. They also have a mile long lake front walking trail, a sandy beach, boat rentals, covered pavilions with barbeque grills and lots of night life entertainment.

You can take a ride on the Virginia Dare to see the lake and enjoy dinning for lunch or dinner. Next to the Virginia Dare is the Tiki Bar, a true fun spot for Jimmy Buffet fans.

On the side of the lake (about twenty minutes away) there are lots of fun clothing shops, miniature golf, arcade, art shop, ice cream parlor, cinema and great restaurants.

The area is rich in history; you will want to make sure you see the Booker T. Washington plantation, the D day Memorial in Bedford and take a tour of how the damn was constructed. And Roanoke is only 40 minutes away and has all kinds of fun night life at market square. It is considered one of the best towns in the state for Bluegrass music. A drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a must; the mountains are soft and lovely, and serenely beautiful.

Please see the location map of the resort below. Our home sits on a hill above the cabins, offer a spectacular view of the lake and Smith Mountain.

Our Home away from Home

Our family has been enjoying the Lodge for 10 years. It is a beautiful place to relax, laugh, eat, swim, sun, boat and read. Our family enjoys the well equiped kitchen for our annual "Cook Offs" we all love to cook and it's a pleasure in the updated lodge kitchen. The Lodge and Cedar Key area is always immaculate and comfortable. The water and mountain views are breath taking. We also rent Cabin 6 and it gives us the best of both worlds, being close to all the family with a place to go if you just want a little peace and quiet. The cabin is also well decorated and equiped. We have had little reason to contact the owners but they have always been available for us. I would be delighted to recommend Cedar Key as the best vacation home for all ages. My husband does use a cane but can get around just fine, the walk down to the water, via the road is a wonderful way to get a little exercise on vacation.

Pictures and words can be deceiving

The house itself is nice...but did not quite live up to its billing.

First of all, on the petty side of things, the smoke alarms were hanging from the ceiling in the sunroom, the floor vent was sticking up and I couldn't get put in place in the master bath, and the lighting in most of the house didn't have sufficient quantity or sufficiently size bulbs to provide much more light than a large nightlight. Also all other rentals we've found and used through home away in the US and around the world provide bedding and towels. The fact that this property doesn't wasn't disclosed until after payment was received and was delivered with the confirmation is unusual.

But to my greater concern and disappointment, this rental is openly billed as "Lake Front" and the listing and photo's can only be called deceptive as there's no mention or photos of the multiple cabins that separate the lodge and its views from the lake. This is clearly only a "Limited Lake View" rental and is not "Lake Front". Also, there was no mention of the numerous (I didn't count them) steps that you have to navigate to get down to the lake and there's no way my parents could have made that walk. After contacting the owner about this after our stay, they modified the listing to say you can drive down to the lake.

I've excerpted from the listing the areas that were untrue and/or deceptive in the listing.

Lakefront Vacation Rental - I don't consider having 3 cabins between the property and the lake which obstruct the views "Lakefront"

..views are of deep woods, silhouetted by Smith Mountain and its surrounding mountains. - Again, no mention of the multiple cabins that obstruct the view of the lack and separate the property from the lake.

You will be delighted with the serine, natural beauty that surrounds our home. - Again, no mention of the view towards the lake that you can't see from the drive up to the house.

Again, our experience in the past with HomeAway properties have been exceptional so perhaps we were due for a lemon. But I can't recommend this property if a Lake Front rental and a quite private vacation is what you're looking for.

For the record, as noted, I did contact the owner about this and she said all of this information was either provided or available via other web sites. We retained all correspondence and I can assure you it was not. Additionally, renters should not need to search the web to find out the truth.
Owner's Response: We have lots of reviews on Homeaway; almost all of them are 5 star rating. Most of our rentals are repeat clients, they love the property. The reviews say: perfection, views are beautiful, gorgeous lake views, loved where it was located, will never vacation any other spot, simply magnificent, absolutely wonderful, perfect for families, amazing, view was stunning, enjoyed the wall of windows overlooking the lake, not disappointed in the least – concerning the house: beautiful, spacious, comfortable, wonderful kitchen, tastefully furnished, has everything you could need, deck is incredible, huge shower, the lodge is simply magnificent.

Unfortunately, these renters had fog (covered the mountain) and rain during most of their stay and this kept them from enjoying the view or using the deck and dock.

I believe this responder had a communication problem with his wife. I provided in writing before they chose to rent the home, that the linens were the responsibility of the renters. It is also included on the amenities’ page of the Homeaway site which states linens are provided for a fee. I also informed her that we were part of an 11 cabin resort and when we did our renovation we were very careful to position the windows so that you did not see the other cabin unless you got next to the windows. There are two aerial shots of the layout of our resort on the front page of Homeaway, depicting the exact location of the Lodge and cabins. The very first sentence of the description of the Lodge is that we are one of eleven cabins. We own the land in front of our Lodge directly to the water and there is a single dock for enjoyment by all our Lodge clients.
I explained to his wife before booking that her parents would want to use the road instead of the steps. Our property is one of the few on the lake that has a road to the waterfront. A picture of the steps was also provided prior to booking. My housekeeper informed me the client set all the lighting fixtures throughout the house on the lowest dimmer setting, there is no problem with the lighting.

Some people are not happy no matter what. I offered to give them a discount to compensate for their displeasure. Instead they chose to write the above review. We have rented this home for 30 years with over 1,000 renters; all have loved it - now we have one that did not. We know you will love our home, don't let this person's views keep you from enjoying the magic this house has to offer.

Perfect! We really enjoyed staying here. The views were beautiful. You can sit out on the deck and see nothing but trees, mountains, and the lake. It is a very secluded area and the land across the lake is undisturbed so it has beautiful views. It is also located in a no wake zone so there is very minimal traffic through that part of the lake. The house was beautiful and clean. Comfortable furniture, nice accommodations including internet and tv, and a beautiful kitchen. The house is very spacious and has everything you could need. We will definitely be staying here again the next time we visit Smith Mountain Lake!

Visiting Family in Roanoke area with Short Vacation on Smith Mountain Lake

  • 5 of 5
  • Submitted: Jun 24, 2012
  • Stayed: Jun 2012
My brother had his 40th birthday so we travelled up for this to see him in Salem with the rest of our family and took the opportunity to take a short vacation. It was the first week our children, from SC, were out of school, so they looked forward to some time on the lake. The property was very nice with a huge open area looking out on the lake. The owners had graciouslly provided lots of cooking utensils and there were even staples in the pantry which helped out a lot.

We brought our 12 year old daughter and 10 year old son. The dock was perfect for swimming -- the no wake cove created a peaceful area where the kids could jump into the water and play. Since our kids are good swimmers after a while we watched them from the lodge when we tired of hanging out by the lake. We rented kayaks the first two day - the kids went on some short excursions in the no wake cove area. My wife and I also swam in the blue water. My wife is a little more accomplished at swimming than I, so swam several miles over our vacation. The water was perfect temperature, not hot like SC lakes often are.

On Tuesday and Wednesday we rented a Speed Boat from Mitchel Marina. We pulled the kids on a tube and a knee board. We had the lake to ourselves as VA schools were still in session and it was midweek. Couldn't ask for better conditions. We took the boat to Crazy Horse marina and had an excellent lunch at the Mexican restaurant. Otherwise, we ate at the lodge. The kids had pancakes about every day. Interestingly, we brought Trader Joe's pancake mix with us and there was an identical box already there ...

During the stay we saw many deer including familes of deer and a faun, wild turkeys and lots of birds. The view was peaceful and restful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

On another note, Greg, the owner, is an author and had left a proof of his book, Second Chance, which is a work of fiction. I read the book and thoroughly enjoyed it. The book tapped into the Native American view of the world that we should respect nature and grow in harmony with it instead of being disconnected from it. The book was well written and I wish him the best of luck in getting it published.

Three Couple Getaway

My husband and I recently stayed at Cedar key Lodge with 4 friends, having chosen it because it was located on a quiet end of the lake and provided 3 bedrooms. Since there were only 2 bathrooms, though, four of us had to share one bathroom (works OK, but we would have preferred our own, of course). The owners were incredibly accommodating and even allowed us to arrive early and stay late since luckily there weren't any other renters on either side of our stay. The house is exactly as pictured, but the kitchen also offers a large, walk-in butler's pantry that supplied everything we needed and more. With its many seating areas, the living space easily accommodated our group. In addition, the outdoor deck was large and shady and we all relaxed there each morning with our coffee and in the evening with appetizers, enjoying the view of the lake. It's important to know though that although the master bedroom offers great privacy and a HUGE shower, there is little privacy between the other 2 bedrooms. Every word can be heard through the walls! However, this would be a great house for either an extended family or 2 couples with children. We appreciated the "no wake" zone location on the lake, with its easy access to Mitchell's Marina, recommended by the owner. Mitchell's is a professionally run, friendly place to rent a pontoon boat and we were so glad we took her advice. We really appreciated the owner's follow-up after our stay as well.
