This architect-built, two-bedroom/two-bath home is located just a short walk from the main square of San Miguel de Allende, one of Mexico's most charming cities with a rich colonial history.
The square (Jardin) is the center of town where you can sit and watch the world go by, hear the mariachis on weekend evenings, and immerse yourself in local atmosphere. The town is a shopper's paradise and provides a vast choice of wonderful restaurants in every price range and to suit all tastes. You could also spend days in the many art galleries or attend one of the many language schools to brush up your Spanish.
Our house is built on three terraced lots. It has a large indoor/outdoor living room and glassed-in dining room overlooking a garden which is partially shaded by old mesquite and pepper trees. From the terrace, which features a beautiful fountain, you can watch the sun set over the city.
The formal indoor living room and master suite have fireplaces.
The separate guest suite has a sitting room, bedroom, and bath.
The entire house is attractively decorated and equipped for comfortable living.
The garage will hold one mid-size van (outside parking is hard to find).
The house has a gardener, and a maid/cook five days a week, who cleans, cooks and does laundry. Amenities include cable TV in both bedroom suites, and telephones on all levels.
Last, but not least, our reliable, English-speaking manager is just one telephone call away.

Rarely does a rental exceed the expectations of seeing the pictures and descriptions online. For this rental that was the case. Two couples rented this house from Dec 25, 2010 to Jan 1. It is well appointed and comfortable with lovely gardens on several levels, home to many species of birds.
It is located northwest of the Jardin, a 10 minute walk from the centro. We thought the small street on which the house is located was one of the prettiest streets in San Miguel.
The kitchen is below the main level of the house which is not unusual in colonial houses. It is well-stocked with dishes and platters and cooking accessories. The concierge had sent directions by email on how to use the oven. The kitchen leads out on the gardens. In the morning taking a cup of coffee outside was a wonderful way to start the day. There are both indoor and outdoor dining areas which added variety to our in-house meals.
There is a garage for a car although we didn't have one. Frankly, a car isn't necessary in San Miguel. Walking is the best way to get around and taxis are plentiful and cheap for excursions just outside the town.
The housekeeper who comes daily is also a terrific cook. She prepared a meal for us to warm up on Christmas Day when we arrived and we hired her to cook another meal later in the week. We gave her money and she bought the provisions and cooked the meal which was waiting for us when we returned from a day trip to Guanajuato. The next day she returned 60 pesos to us--her honesty and reliability were terrific. The concierge, Leonor, is English-speaking and was easily reachable by phone.
The two bedrooms are not equal in size or amenities. The upstairs bedroom is much bigger and better appointed with a sitting room and large flat panel TV. The downstairs bedroom is quiet and comfortable but not comparable to the other room. The house may be best suited to one couple with children old enough to stay in the downstairs room. Or two couples who trade off during their stay.
The U.S.-based owners were wonderful to deal with before and after the rental, providing us a set of keys in advance to use when we arrived on Christmas and promptly returning the security deposit.
Overall it was a terrific experience to be in San Miguel during the holidays and this house definitely enhanced the experience!
This is a lovely house with two levels of lush gardens. The upper level patio looks over the lower garden, planted with mature cyprus and pepper trees. You have the relaxing sounds of the water fountain and birdsong, and on one tranquil afternoon, we could see hummingbirds feeding in the garden. Ideally located, house is a ten minute walk to the jardin, shops and galleries. Some excellent restaurants are within a short walk. The house is beautifully decorated with native arts, crafts, and furnishings, which make for a comfortable and rustic setting. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend the house to friends.
An elegant house and a lovely garden with huge old pepper trees! Huge patio and outdoor living room. The location was excellent for my needs - I walked nearly everywhere! The house was clean (daily maid service) and safe. Then, San Miguel is a safe city to visit overall.
The one issue I had with the house was that the kitchen was in an awkward place for me to go down there in the evening to make a snack, etc. This could well not be an issue for someone else.
I enjoyed the privacy when I was at the house, and the ease in walking to the Biblioteca, the Jardin, or the Instituto or St. Pauls, where there were a number of musical events on Sunday evenings.
I was in touch with both the property manager and the owners, and all were very kind and professional to work with.
I recommend the property!
