Rarely does a rental exceed the expectations of seeing the pictures and descriptions online. For this rental that was the case. Two couples rented this house from Dec 25, 2010 to Jan 1. It is well appointed and comfortable with lovely gardens on several levels, home to many species of birds.

It is located northwest of the Jardin, a 10 minute walk from the centro. We thought the small street on which the house is located was one of the prettiest streets in San Miguel.

The kitchen is below the main level of the house which is not unusual in colonial houses. It is well-stocked with dishes and platters and cooking accessories. The concierge had sent directions by email on how to use the oven. The kitchen leads out on the gardens. In the morning taking a cup of coffee outside was a wonderful way to start the day. There are both indoor and outdoor dining areas which added variety to our in-house meals.

There is a garage for a car although we didn't have one. Frankly, a car isn't necessary in San Miguel. Walking is the best way to get around and taxis are plentiful and cheap for excursions just outside the town.

The housekeeper who comes daily is also a terrific cook. She prepared a meal for us to warm up on Christmas Day when we arrived and we hired her to cook another meal later in the week. We gave her money and she bought the provisions and cooked the meal which was waiting for us when we returned from a day trip to Guanajuato. The next day she returned 60 pesos to us--her honesty and reliability were terrific. The concierge, Leonor, is English-speaking and was easily reachable by phone.

The two bedrooms are not equal in size or amenities. The upstairs bedroom is much bigger and better appointed with a sitting room and large flat panel TV. The downstairs bedroom is quiet and comfortable but not comparable to the other room. The house may be best suited to one couple with children old enough to stay in the downstairs room. Or two couples who trade off during their stay.

The U.S.-based owners were wonderful to deal with before and after the rental, providing us a set of keys in advance to use when we arrived on Christmas and promptly returning the security deposit.

Overall it was a terrific experience to be in San Miguel during the holidays and this house definitely enhanced the experience!
