Overview

Kyoto House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3)

The Arashiyama Hanare was registered as a ''Important Cultural Properties of Kyoto'' . The Arashiyama Hanare is a traditional Japanese 'Machiya' is located in scenic Arashiyama, on the west side of Kyoto. The train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is from there it's 10-15 minutes to Kyoto Station. Arashiyama is a popular tourist destination in Kyoto, with it's beautiful scenery, the Hozu and Katsura Rivers with it's romantic 'Moon-Crossing Bridge' (8 minute walk),the bamboo grove and the Monkey Park.

The UNESCO World Heritage listed Tenryuji Temple is an 8 minute walk away. Other temples are such as Daikakuji temple(It was the villeage for the emperor), Seiryoji temple, Adashino Nenbutsuji temple, Jojakkoji temple, Nisonin temple and Rokuoin temple etc, which are possible to visit from the Arashiyama Hanare by walk.

Other sights are very easily reached by the Randen line train, such as Ninnaji Temple, Ryoanji Temple, Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) and Saihoji (Moss Temple.) Other nearby tourist attractions include the Saga 'Romantic Train' old-fashioned diesel train which winds through the hills, as well as boat rental and white-water rafting, not to mention hiking, all located nearby.

Out side of Kyoto, it is very easy to access other popular tourist spots such as Nara, Uji, Osaka, Himeji, Hiroshima etc by JR train since the JR train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is five minutes walk away. A natural 'onsen' hot spring (entrance fee just ¥1000) is just a 15 minute walk away.

The Arashiyama Hanare was built on before 1935, and was completely restored in November 2008-2011. The restoration was a labor of love, requiring the participation of artisans specializing in traditional carpentry techniques, and using natural materials in all areas both inside and out. Great efforts were made to recreate an atmosphere which will allow guests to experience the traditional way of living. An added modern touch for comfort is the luxurious bathing area and bathroom...where you can soak in the oversized tub while gazing at the Zen garden, after a full day of sightseeing.

The Arashiyama Hanare is just behind the main house, but has an independent entrance and accommodation are completely separated. The total space is 55 square meters. Near the entrance is the original old Japanese style kitchen which has basic facilities for cooking. The floor of the kitchen is made of 'tataki,' a traditional mixture of 'shikkui' and soil. There are two tatami rooms, one 3 mats, and the other 6 mats. Two to three guests can be accommodated on futons, which can be placed on the floor of either room.

The Arashiyama Hanare shares a 'Zen garden' called Nakaniwa, with the main house. The owners live in the main house. Owners speak English, and are happy to provide assistance during the stay. One of the owners is an 'Ikebana' master, and flower arrangements will welcome guests upon arrival.

There's easy access to all of the sightseeing spots in central Kyoto. The train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is five minutes walk away, and from there it's 10-15 minutes to Kyoto Station. Another train station 'Randen Saga' is three minutes walk away.

The Arashiyama Hanare offers an opportunity to experience Kyoto life in a very special part of the city, living in a typical Kyoto silent neighborhood.

In the days when the ancient capital was located in Nara, Arashiyama was known as a pleasure resort for the Emperor and his court people. Since then, it has always attracted people with it's scenic beauty and seasonal colors, particularly the cherry blossoms of the Spring, and the changing leaves of the Autumn.

You can spend your personal time in this space where the Arashiyama Hanare is intimate.

Please have a look at 'guest comments' to hear about the personal experiences of a few of our guests. Those were left to quest's own devices, owner don't left those comments!

Charming and comfortable

  • 5 of 5
I organized a first short trip to Japan for my wife and 12 year old daughter, including a few days at the Arashiyama Hanare. The house is adorable, very tastefully and mindfully decorated in the most traditional style, and yet very comfortable for 21st century Western travelers. The neighborhood is charming, quiet, village-like, and very convenient: close to the bank, post office, stores, grocery, supermarket, cafes, bicycle rental, a couple of minutes away from Arashiyama station and the Randen line, within walking distance to all major sights in Saga-Arashiyama, with great dining options, including the wonderfully welcoming and tourist-free Daizen sushi bar, which accommodated our special dietary needs - we have Celiac disease - with grace and precision. Waking up in the Arashiyama Hanare is like traveling back into times past and touching the essence of Japanese esthetics. It is also a great teaching for those of us who, coming from the American continent, have a different perception of space. We deeply appreciated our host's readiness to help with restaurant reservations and tips, as well as our hostess' elegant ikebana. We wholeheartedly recommend the Arashiyama Hanare for an authentically Japanese experience.

Awesome stay!

  • 5 of 5
Thank you Tanaka-san for opening up your home to us! The home itself is beautiful and the amenities were perfect. Garden and flower arrangement was lovely. The futons were surprisingly very comfortable. The location was perfect. Very close to the 2 train stations that take you to anywhere in Kyoto. Nice to have the Lawson nearby for breakfast items and snacks. The neighborhood and Arashiyama were very nice. Kyoto is beautiful in the fall and saw lots of colorful leaves.

Two thumbs up!

  • 5 of 5
I had a very special first trip to Kyoto, in part thanks to the pleasant stay in Tanaka-san's home. The gracious owners welcomed us upon our late-night arrival and showed us around the guest house. I felt it was a very authentic and interesting Japanese experience. The amenities provided covered our every need from hair dryer to washer/dryer to kitchen utensils, and the sleeping futons were very comfortable. The house is within easy walking distance to restaurants, convenience stores, bicycle rentals (great for exploring Arashiyama), and several train stations. The ride into central Kyoto took only 15 minutes.

We loved the town of Arashiyama as much as we liked the house. It was gorgeous during the weeks of autumn foliage, especially up towards the mountains where we found a few beautiful little temples and quiet tree-lined streets with nice homes and shops. We also took a lovely stroll along the river. It was very special and romantic, such a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. I cannot recommend the place more highly.

Beautiful house - great location

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the Arashiyama Hanare house for 10 days, and it was everything we could have asked for. A traditional living experience, but also very comfortable. The house was beautiful and well maintained - the owners were great and available for any questions, but we had no problems or concerns. The house is in a nice, quiet, neighborhood (there is even a pretty little temple right down the street), but still so close to 2 rail lines, the Arashiyama sites, and places to eat (for local "Kyoto style" sushi, try Daizen right around the corner - the chef makes great sushi and he and his wife are very friendly). We would recommend the house to anyone looking for a great place to stay while exploring and experiencing Kyoto.

Enjoyable stay in this traditional Japanese accommodation

  • 4 of 5
We enjoyed staying in this authentic traditional Japanese home for almost one week.
The stated description and the photos accurately reflect the rental's appearance, the facilities and the surrounding area.
The property was clean and well-maintained. The owner was available to answer any questions and concerns we had. He is very kind and a fluent English speaker.
We particularly appreciated the sober elegance of the interior, the comfort of the futon beds and the practical washing/drying machine. Less practical was the lack of storage area in the kitchen.
The accomodation is well located near public transportation and in an attractive area.
We can recommend this accomodation to anyone interested in living in a traditional Japanese house, which also means some limitations but overall is a a worthwhile experience.

I love this place!

  • 5 of 5
I was initially hesitant to book because the location was not in Kyoto city center but I'm glad that I chose Arashiyama Hanare. Staying here and enjoying Arashiyama was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan. If you want to stay in an authentic Japanese home and neighborhood I definitely recommend this place. The property was absolutely beautiful and immaculately clean. The amenities were exactly what we needed (WIFI, washer/dryer, kitchen, etc). There were various shops, restaurants, and convenience stores in the area and close to several train stations. Don't miss out on experiencing this beautiful property and location!
