Overview

Kyoto House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3)

The Arashiyama Hanare was registered as a ''Important Cultural Properties of Kyoto'' . The Arashiyama Hanare is a traditional Japanese 'Machiya' is located in scenic Arashiyama, on the west side of Kyoto. The train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is from there it's 10-15 minutes to Kyoto Station. Arashiyama is a popular tourist destination in Kyoto, with it's beautiful scenery, the Hozu and Katsura Rivers with it's romantic 'Moon-Crossing Bridge' (8 minute walk),the bamboo grove and the Monkey Park.

The UNESCO World Heritage listed Tenryuji Temple is an 8 minute walk away. Other temples are such as Daikakuji temple(It was the villeage for the emperor), Seiryoji temple, Adashino Nenbutsuji temple, Jojakkoji temple, Nisonin temple and Rokuoin temple etc, which are possible to visit from the Arashiyama Hanare by walk.

Other sights are very easily reached by the Randen line train, such as Ninnaji Temple, Ryoanji Temple, Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) and Saihoji (Moss Temple.) Other nearby tourist attractions include the Saga 'Romantic Train' old-fashioned diesel train which winds through the hills, as well as boat rental and white-water rafting, not to mention hiking, all located nearby.

Out side of Kyoto, it is very easy to access other popular tourist spots such as Nara, Uji, Osaka, Himeji, Hiroshima etc by JR train since the JR train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is five minutes walk away. A natural 'onsen' hot spring (entrance fee just ¥1000) is just a 15 minute walk away.

The Arashiyama Hanare was built on before 1935, and was completely restored in November 2008-2011. The restoration was a labor of love, requiring the participation of artisans specializing in traditional carpentry techniques, and using natural materials in all areas both inside and out. Great efforts were made to recreate an atmosphere which will allow guests to experience the traditional way of living. An added modern touch for comfort is the luxurious bathing area and bathroom...where you can soak in the oversized tub while gazing at the Zen garden, after a full day of sightseeing.

The Arashiyama Hanare is just behind the main house, but has an independent entrance and accommodation are completely separated. The total space is 55 square meters. Near the entrance is the original old Japanese style kitchen which has basic facilities for cooking. The floor of the kitchen is made of 'tataki,' a traditional mixture of 'shikkui' and soil. There are two tatami rooms, one 3 mats, and the other 6 mats. Two to three guests can be accommodated on futons, which can be placed on the floor of either room.

The Arashiyama Hanare shares a 'Zen garden' called Nakaniwa, with the main house. The owners live in the main house. Owners speak English, and are happy to provide assistance during the stay. One of the owners is an 'Ikebana' master, and flower arrangements will welcome guests upon arrival.

There's easy access to all of the sightseeing spots in central Kyoto. The train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is five minutes walk away, and from there it's 10-15 minutes to Kyoto Station. Another train station 'Randen Saga' is three minutes walk away.

The Arashiyama Hanare offers an opportunity to experience Kyoto life in a very special part of the city, living in a typical Kyoto silent neighborhood.

In the days when the ancient capital was located in Nara, Arashiyama was known as a pleasure resort for the Emperor and his court people. Since then, it has always attracted people with it's scenic beauty and seasonal colors, particularly the cherry blossoms of the Spring, and the changing leaves of the Autumn.

You can spend your personal time in this space where the Arashiyama Hanare is intimate.

A great introduction to Japan

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from Japan so I need to take a moment and write a review. VBRO users have helped me to find so many great places and this is no exception. It is unique and was a wonderful way to start our Japan vacation. In a hidden street, quite secure, quiet, and peaceful. My husband had never slept on a futon, so a great experience for him! I was glad we took a shuttle straight to the address, however, after that, no need for a taxi or shuttle as the train is so close. Loved Arishiyama. Rode bikes, and albiet, a bit crazy at times, very fun. There were not a lot of dinner places open, which was fine, however, if you are looking for one, the place right next to the train station is very good. We ate there twice. Loved the sukiyaki. Also, enjoyed the yakitori place that was recommended. Very fun and sat at the bar. A true adventure. We LOVED the bath. Very relaxing at the end of a long day of walking. The kitchen is very small...which was fine by me...no big cooking when on vacation...but perfect for warming up a snack. Can't really see it for children, but for my 60 year old husband and myself (50) was perfect. Enjoyed it very much. The owner is very kind, yet you feel quite private and serene.

Our great fortune

  • 5 of 5

Last year my wife and I enjoyed a vacation in Kyoto staying at a beautiful ryokan in Higashiyama. We luxuriated in our beautiful surroundings and the innkeepers' pampering. It was a wonderful holiday, a great lifetime experience. This year, when work brought me back to Kansai and I was able to organize a one week holiday for us in my schedule, the thought occurred that instead of staying at a ryokan we would rent a traditional house, and experience daily life in Kyoto as a resident might. First, the time flew by - I can't believe it's over. Second - I'm struggling to find the words - the experience of staying at Hanare house allowed us to find the extraordinary in the ordinary in Japan. After 18 years of visiting and enjoying Japan this was the highlight. I'm sorry, I don't know how to say it better - please allow yourself the experience. It's great.

Peaceful and Zen and Perfect!!

  • 5 of 5

If you think staying in Arashiyama is too far to tour Kyoto, I can easily tell you it is not. The area is served by 3 stations (JR, Randen, one more I cant remember), getting in and out of the tourist spot is a piece of cake. The surrounding property is peaceful and not to mention the flawless condition of the house. I would not hesitate to come and stay here again or recommend this property to anyone.

So zen and calm

  • 5 of 5

My nephew and I stayed at the wonderful Arashiyama Hanare in early December and we both so enjoyed the experience. I personally loved the effortless integration of traditional and modern. At first it all looks from another era; tatami mats, rice paper walls, pebbled zen garden; but then on closer inspection you notice the mod cons; induction ceramic cook top, high tech hot water bath and the wonderful Japanese loo (if you have been to Japan you know what I'm talking about ;-)

Travelling with a teenager meant he would usually sleep in, but this didn't matter as each morning I would head out for a stroll around the beautiful Arashiyama area (river, bamboo forest, temples) before we headed into the Kyoto sights. On that note the access just around the corner to the JR train AND the tram made getting to the sites easier, as Kyoto public transport is not the easiest to navigate, and the JR train network is by far the easiest way to link in with the private trains, buses and private metro.

I am already planning my next trip back to Japan and I hope I will be able to stay at Arashiyama Harare house again!

Charming and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

I organized a first short trip to Japan for my wife and 12 year old daughter, including a few days at the Arashiyama Hanare. The house is adorable, very tastefully and mindfully decorated in the most traditional style, and yet very comfortable for 21st century Western travelers. The neighborhood is charming, quiet, village-like, and very convenient: close to the bank, post office, stores, grocery, supermarket, cafes, bicycle rental, a couple of minutes away from Arashiyama station and the Randen line, within walking distance to all major sights in Saga-Arashiyama, with great dining options, including the wonderfully welcoming and tourist-free Daizen sushi bar, which accommodated our special dietary needs - we have Celiac disease - with grace and precision. Waking up in the Arashiyama Hanare is like traveling back into times past and touching the essence of Japanese esthetics. It is also a great teaching for those of us who, coming from the American continent, have a different perception of space. We deeply appreciated our host's readiness to help with restaurant reservations and tips, as well as our hostess' elegant ikebana. We wholeheartedly recommend the Arashiyama Hanare for an authentically Japanese experience.

Awesome stay!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Tanaka-san for opening up your home to us! The home itself is beautiful and the amenities were perfect. Garden and flower arrangement was lovely. The futons were surprisingly very comfortable. The location was perfect. Very close to the 2 train stations that take you to anywhere in Kyoto. Nice to have the Lawson nearby for breakfast items and snacks. The neighborhood and Arashiyama were very nice. Kyoto is beautiful in the fall and saw lots of colorful leaves.
