STAY IN IMPORTANT CULTURAL PROPERTIES OF KYOTO ''ARASHIYAMA HANARE’’

Kyoto House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3)

The Arashiyama Hanare was registered as a ''Important Cultural Properties of Kyoto'' . The Arashiyama Hanare is a traditional Japanese 'Machiya' is located in scenic Arashiyama, on the west side of Kyoto. The train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is from there it's 10-15 minutes to Kyoto Station. Arashiyama is a popular tourist destination in Kyoto, with it's beautiful scenery, the Hozu and Katsura Rivers with it's romantic 'Moon-Crossing Bridge' (8 minute walk),the bamboo grove and the Monkey Park.

The UNESCO World Heritage listed Tenryuji Temple is an 8 minute walk away. Other temples are such as Daikakuji temple(It was the villeage for the emperor), Seiryoji temple, Adashino Nenbutsuji temple, Jojakkoji temple, Nisonin temple and Rokuoin temple etc, which are possible to visit from the Arashiyama Hanare by walk.

Other sights are very easily reached by the Randen line train, such as Ninnaji Temple, Ryoanji Temple, Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) and Saihoji (Moss Temple.) Other nearby tourist attractions include the Saga 'Romantic Train' old-fashioned diesel train which winds through the hills, as well as boat rental and white-water rafting, not to mention hiking, all located nearby.

Out side of Kyoto, it is very easy to access other popular tourist spots such as Nara, Uji, Osaka, Himeji, Hiroshima etc by JR train since the JR train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is five minutes walk away. A natural 'onsen' hot spring (entrance fee just ¥1000) is just a 15 minute walk away.

The Arashiyama Hanare was built on before 1935, and was completely restored in November 2008-2011. The restoration was a labor of love, requiring the participation of artisans specializing in traditional carpentry techniques, and using natural materials in all areas both inside and out. Great efforts were made to recreate an atmosphere which will allow guests to experience the traditional way of living. An added modern touch for comfort is the luxurious bathing area and bathroom...where you can soak in the oversized tub while gazing at the Zen garden, after a full day of sightseeing.

The Arashiyama Hanare is just behind the main house, but has an independent entrance and accommodation are completely separated. The total space is 55 square meters. Near the entrance is the original old Japanese style kitchen which has basic facilities for cooking. The floor of the kitchen is made of 'tataki,' a traditional mixture of 'shikkui' and soil. There are two tatami rooms, one 3 mats, and the other 6 mats. Two to three guests can be accommodated on futons, which can be placed on the floor of either room.

The Arashiyama Hanare shares a 'Zen garden' called Nakaniwa, with the main house. The owners live in the main house. Owners speak English, and are happy to provide assistance during the stay. One of the owners is an 'Ikebana' master, and flower arrangements will welcome guests upon arrival.

There's easy access to all of the sightseeing spots in central Kyoto. The train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is five minutes walk away, and from there it's 10-15 minutes to Kyoto Station. Another train station 'Randen Saga' is three minutes walk away.

The Arashiyama Hanare offers an opportunity to experience Kyoto life in a very special part of the city, living in a typical Kyoto silent neighborhood.

In the days when the ancient capital was located in Nara, Arashiyama was known as a pleasure resort for the Emperor and his court people. Since then, it has always attracted people with it's scenic beauty and seasonal colors, particularly the cherry blossoms of the Spring, and the changing leaves of the Autumn.

You can spend your personal time in this space where the Arashiyama Hanare is intimate.

Enjoyable stay in this traditional Japanese accommodation

  • 4 of 5
We enjoyed staying in this authentic traditional Japanese home for almost one week.
The stated description and the photos accurately reflect the rental's appearance, the facilities and the surrounding area.
The property was clean and well-maintained. The owner was available to answer any questions and concerns we had. He is very kind and a fluent English speaker.
We particularly appreciated the sober elegance of the interior, the comfort of the futon beds and the practical washing/drying machine. Less practical was the lack of storage area in the kitchen.
The accomodation is well located near public transportation and in an attractive area.
We can recommend this accomodation to anyone interested in living in a traditional Japanese house, which also means some limitations but overall is a a worthwhile experience.

I love this place!

  • 5 of 5
I was initially hesitant to book because the location was not in Kyoto city center but I'm glad that I chose Arashiyama Hanare. Staying here and enjoying Arashiyama was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan. If you want to stay in an authentic Japanese home and neighborhood I definitely recommend this place. The property was absolutely beautiful and immaculately clean. The amenities were exactly what we needed (WIFI, washer/dryer, kitchen, etc). There were various shops, restaurants, and convenience stores in the area and close to several train stations. Don't miss out on experiencing this beautiful property and location!

A Great Place to stay!

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed for a full month in the Arashiyama Hanare House. It was a great, great stay. The house had the complete feel and esthetics of a traditional house, a high quality, polished one with all the essential modern conveniences. Everything about the house bespoke quality and care.

The owner was just next door and was ready to help with anything we needed. The garden was an oasis and the quiet and security was perfect.

For a traveler with a rail pass -- or without one -- the location was the best. You are a short walk from 2 key rail lines (and two additional ones). We strongly recommend the west side of Kyoto which is served by these lines, directly to Kyoto station or into the heart of the city. This reduces the need for cabs or buses to almost nothing. And Kyoto station is a great hub and resource. Arashiyama is like being in a small town with great facilities, great sights and activities right next to one of the most magnificent cities in the world. And you are fast train rides to everywhere from hot springs villages to Tokyo from Kyoto Station.

We were so glad to be able to have this opportunity.

Wonderful unique place in a beautiful town - very special

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here for ten days in April and very much enjoyed the place and the location. It is as advertised, was very clean and everything worked perfectly. The owner was very helpful from day one and even arranged temple reservations for us and reserved baseball tickets too! It is a unique authentic Japanese accommodation with updated features and the Arashiyama location is very special - a beautiful town and a short hop to Kyoto and elsewhere. It is no more than 5-10 minutes from JR Station. We loved the town and felt very lucky to be returning every evening to our quiet "home". The neighbourhood restaurant recommendations the owner suggested were all very good.

Just as great the third time as the first and second!

  • 5 of 5
I stayed again at Hanare House for 19 days in February.
I love this place!
This is the epitome of traditional Japanese culture and architecture.
Situated in the lovely suburb of Kyoto it is 15 minutes by train or cable car to downtown Kyoto.
Arashiyama is a quiet little town featuring many cultural sites as well as numerous great restaurants.
I can't say enough about how much I enjoy staying here.
From the wonderful owner family to the friendliness of the town people to the whole cultural experience in staying in a beautiful restored Machiya it would be well worth your while to seriously consider Hanare House in your travel plans.
