STAY IN IMPORTANT CULTURAL PROPERTIES OF KYOTO ''ARASHIYAMA HANARE’’

Kyoto House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3)

The Arashiyama Hanare was registered as a ''Important Cultural Properties of Kyoto'' . The Arashiyama Hanare is a traditional Japanese 'Machiya' is located in scenic Arashiyama, on the west side of Kyoto. The train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is from there it's 10-15 minutes to Kyoto Station. Arashiyama is a popular tourist destination in Kyoto, with it's beautiful scenery, the Hozu and Katsura Rivers with it's romantic 'Moon-Crossing Bridge' (8 minute walk),the bamboo grove and the Monkey Park.

The UNESCO World Heritage listed Tenryuji Temple is an 8 minute walk away. Other temples are such as Daikakuji temple(It was the villeage for the emperor), Seiryoji temple, Adashino Nenbutsuji temple, Jojakkoji temple, Nisonin temple and Rokuoin temple etc, which are possible to visit from the Arashiyama Hanare by walk.

Other sights are very easily reached by the Randen line train, such as Ninnaji Temple, Ryoanji Temple, Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) and Saihoji (Moss Temple.) Other nearby tourist attractions include the Saga 'Romantic Train' old-fashioned diesel train which winds through the hills, as well as boat rental and white-water rafting, not to mention hiking, all located nearby.

Out side of Kyoto, it is very easy to access other popular tourist spots such as Nara, Uji, Osaka, Himeji, Hiroshima etc by JR train since the JR train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is five minutes walk away. A natural 'onsen' hot spring (entrance fee just ¥1000) is just a 15 minute walk away.

The Arashiyama Hanare was built on before 1935, and was completely restored in November 2008-2011. The restoration was a labor of love, requiring the participation of artisans specializing in traditional carpentry techniques, and using natural materials in all areas both inside and out. Great efforts were made to recreate an atmosphere which will allow guests to experience the traditional way of living. An added modern touch for comfort is the luxurious bathing area and bathroom...where you can soak in the oversized tub while gazing at the Zen garden, after a full day of sightseeing.

The Arashiyama Hanare is just behind the main house, but has an independent entrance and accommodation are completely separated. The total space is 55 square meters. Near the entrance is the original old Japanese style kitchen which has basic facilities for cooking. The floor of the kitchen is made of 'tataki,' a traditional mixture of 'shikkui' and soil. There are two tatami rooms, one 3 mats, and the other 6 mats. Two to three guests can be accommodated on futons, which can be placed on the floor of either room.

The Arashiyama Hanare shares a 'Zen garden' called Nakaniwa, with the main house. The owners live in the main house. Owners speak English, and are happy to provide assistance during the stay. One of the owners is an 'Ikebana' master, and flower arrangements will welcome guests upon arrival.

There's easy access to all of the sightseeing spots in central Kyoto. The train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is five minutes walk away, and from there it's 10-15 minutes to Kyoto Station. Another train station 'Randen Saga' is three minutes walk away.

The Arashiyama Hanare offers an opportunity to experience Kyoto life in a very special part of the city, living in a typical Kyoto silent neighborhood.

In the days when the ancient capital was located in Nara, Arashiyama was known as a pleasure resort for the Emperor and his court people. Since then, it has always attracted people with it's scenic beauty and seasonal colors, particularly the cherry blossoms of the Spring, and the changing leaves of the Autumn.

You can spend your personal time in this space where the Arashiyama Hanare is intimate.

I stayed again at Hanare House for 19 days in February.
I love this place!
This is the epitome of traditional Japanese culture and architecture.
Situated in the lovely suburb of Kyoto it is 15 minutes by train or cable car to downtown Kyoto.
Arashiyama is a quiet little town featuring many cultural sites as well as numerous great restaurants.
I can't say enough about how much I enjoy staying here.
From the wonderful owner family to the friendliness of the town people to the whole cultural experience in staying in a beautiful restored Machiya it would be well worth your while to seriously consider Hanare House in your travel plans.

My wife and I stayed in this wonderful Japanese unit for one week in mid-December. It was true that the whether is rather cold and thus it was not completely comfortable using bathroom or restroom. However, we got used to it quickly. It was in a quiet neighborhood and was less than 10 minutes walk away from the train station to Kyoto (12 min rapid train ride). This would be a perfect location for Spring to Fall.

Both of us grew up in Taiwan and had our childhood houses just like this one and thus we enjoyed this house tremendously. It brought back a lot of good memories. We would come back to stay in this house again next time around to explore more places in Kyoto, Nara and Osaka.

A friend and I stayed at Arashiyama Hanare for 17 days. We started our day with tea over looking the garden and ended it with a "japanese bath" before bed. We fixed breakfast and dinner at home shopping nearby at Fresco, the vegetable, sushi and tofu shops and in the mornings visiting our neighbor for garden fresh vegetables. Arashiyama Hanare is a peaceful, quiet oasis especially appreciated after a day in Kyoto, which is just a short trip by train from the Saga Arashiyama station. Hanare is beautiful in its simplicity. Tatami mats, sliding doors, dry garden, square table, wooden chest, lantern light, futons and an exceptionally beautiful ikebana flower arrangement. The river, Tenryu-ji and other temples, the bamboo forest, Rakushisha where Basho stayed are all within an easy delightful walk from Hanare. There are lots of little shops and restaurants to discover and lunch at Tenryu-ji is a special experience. We cannot say enough about the friendliness of the people and the Tanaka family in particular. Tokuji Tanaka is a wonderful source of information whether for directions on how to get somewhere, a dinner restaurant recommendation, or for an explanation about traditional architecture. You only have to ask. Hanare is a unique and special place to stay. It also makes a great home base for exploring Kyoto. We always loved returning to the peace of Arashiyama and our little home. It is simply a wonderful place to be.

We stayed in Higashiyama for part of our time in Kyoto and concluded our visit with 3 nights in Arashiyama. When we return, we both agreed that we'd base our stay in Arashiyama. Arashiyama Hinare was itself wonderful. Great location and very charming and quiet. Arashiyama is a bit out of the way, but it's not too far away from central Kyoto and it has a much more laid back feel. One thing you may not hear about but that was a highlight for us: rent a bike and ride across the bridge and up the river. We stopped and went swimming where the trail ends (right by a gorgeous ryokan). Anyhow, you won't be disappointed here....we loved it.
