Welcome to our home, Needle Mountain Chalet. We are located in one of Colorado’s most beautiful valleys about two and one half miles from the Durango Mountain Resort and Purgatory ski slopes.
At 8900 feet elevation, Needle Mountain Chalet is situated on five acres covered with Aspen trees and Colorado Blue Spruce. With easy access to Highway 550, the Chalet is an all season vacation home where the roads are always plowed which makes for an easy 5 minute drive to the ski slopes.
Our home is large and accommodating. The Chalet is approximately 4,000 square feet with three bedrooms and three baths. We can easily sleep ten people. The views from our home from every window and both spacious decks are spectacular.
The Needle Mountain Range, which rises to over 14,000 feet elevation, forms the eastern wall of the valley, and the finely chiseled Hermosa Cliffs rise in back of the Chalet on the west side. The Needle and West Needle ranges provide a veritable feast to the eyes. Towering 6,000 feet above the valley floor, they dominate the view from the master bedroom, main living room, loft living room, dining room, and front deck.
Regardless of season or time of day, the vision is always changing and very dramatic at times. The back of the house faces the Hermosa Cliffs where the magnificent Castle Rock rises almost 2,000 feet above the Chalet.
The majestic rise of the cliffs is breathtaking when viewed from the back patio, loft living room, upper level and main level bedrooms, and especially the deck adjoining the upper level bedroom. And the views are equally spectacular when hiking our 5 acre lot of aspen trees and spruce and the one mile loop around the neighborhood.
The Chalet has a large living and dining area. The kitchen is one that a professional cook would love and feel at home with. We can easily seat fourteen in the dining room, but have dishes for 25. The pantry is stocked with many basics so that guests do not have to reinvent the wheel on their stay here. There are two large ovens and an oven/warming drawer to keep meals hot. In addition, we offer personal chef services as well as daily cleaning and baby sitting services. If you wish to have the kitchen stocked with your fresh items, we can provide that service as well.
The decks have wonderful seating with patio heaters to keep you snug and warm. If you are coming in from a long day on the ski slopes slip outside and relax in the hot tub on our large deck. The hot tub is kept heated for our guests and is spotless clean. The view is of the Hermosa Cliffs - specifically Castle Peak.
The garages accommodate a total of three vehicles and guests have the use of our garage door openers. There is also some covered parking for parties with more than three cars. In the winter time make sure you either have a four wheel drive or chains for your tires. We get a lot of snow at 8,900 feet.
The office is available for the use of our guests. We have wired internet access and wireless internet access that is available throughout the house. The phone service includes unlimited long distance calling throughout the USA as well, so if this needs to be a working vacation, you will have all you need.
The Durango winters can be cold on the mountain. The Chalet has heated floors and central heat that also has an air cleaner and humidifier. There is also a backup generator in case the power goes out – which can occasionally occur on the mountain. The generator automatically turns on if the power goes out to keep our guests warm and comfortable.
We have two 60 gallon hot water heaters that are in tandem, so hot water is unlimited.
Our home is dog friendly, and we welcome your pets as a member of the family. A dog bed is provided in the laundry room along with a gate that can be used to secure your pet in the laundry room. There are also watering and food dishes for your pet.
But more than anything, you will enjoy and be awe struck with the fantastic views from every one of the many windows in the house and the immediate access to skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, golfing, and numerous other outdoor activities. A favorite activity is sitting on the decks admiring the beauty with the heaters on if it cold and then, of course, if you are coming in from a long day of skiing there is the long soak in the hot tub off the back deck.
After a long but wonderful day on the ski slopes or the hiking trail or the golf course---or just sightseeing or riding the narrow gauge railroad or shopping in Durango--- get away from the crowds and congestion and enjoy the essence and solitude of the Rockies. The Chalet is truly Rocky Mountain High. So come and stay a spell.

Hello, we are Sue and Royce Holland from Dallas, Texas. We love Durango and decided to purchase a second home here in 2008. We are out of town, about 24 miles from downtown Durango. Our home is at 8,900 feet altitude on five acres of aspen trees. It is beautiful. There is lots of wildlife around the house which is fun to watch. And we just are away from it all.
The ski resort is 2 1/2 miles north of the house, so its a quick trip in the winter time. There are a few restaurants that are within a mile or two from the house as well.
The views are second to none. We love spending the early part of the evening watching the sun set. We love our home and hope you will too.

My husband is all about the view. And the view of the Needle Mountains and the Hermosa Cliffs are amazing.
There is a fire pit out back with beautiful view of the Needle Mountain range and the Hermosa Cliffs. The Cliffs rise dramatically behind the house. It is an amazing sight.
Enjoy the hot tub off the large deck.
In addition to its quick access to one of the finest ski resorts in the Rockies, the Chalet is located a quarter mile from the trailhead of the beautiful Elbert Creek Trail which stretches 9.9 miles into the San Juan Mountains and is a good challenge for accomplished hikers.
The initial portion of the trail is a relatively easy and scenic trail for less strenuous hiking or snowshoeing. Numerous other excellent hiking trails are within 5 to 20 miles north of the Chalet as you travel Highway 550 over Coal Bank Pass and Molas Pass on the way to Silverton. And for golfers, there are about half a dozen courses located within about 25 miles of the Needle Mountain Chal
