Not the "Cozy Retreat" I imagined
Not the "Cozy Retreat" I imagined

What the photo doesn't show is that this property has no privacy and that feeling is heightened by the owner who was quite "in your face" and bossy. Two of us rented it with the idea of having friends and family come for single night visits during our stay - it is supposed to sleep 8 and we never had more than 6 there. The owner made a rather nasty comment about "having to know who was staying there at all times" and made us feel quite unwelcome. The "Professional Cleaning Fee"? That's the owner loaded up with supplies at 8:00 am Saturday morning while you are trying to pack up to leave.
As to the house itself. The downstairs bath sink was clogged the entire time. When it was brought to the attention of the owner he said, "I put that in myself and it has been a problem all summer, guess I'll have to call a plumber at the end of the season." The upstairs shower was also obviously an "owner install project" as it was nearly impossible to keep it from flooding the floor.
The kitchen is so tiny and narrow only one person can be in there at a time and it is very HOT. Bedroom #3 is not a bedroom at all but a pass-through to to upper deck. No room for a bedside table or place to put clothes and there is no air conditioning so you have to leave the door open to the deck which makes it hot and noisy.
The other two bedrooms require ac all the time as they are stuffy and the bedroom with only one window has the ac unit in it so you have no choice.
Please note, the Marginal Way is lovely but if you are a fan of the beach the only access is to take the trolley and Ogunquit beach is non-existent except during low tide.
For the price? I would shop around and not rent here again.
Owner's Response: We are saddened that this particular guest did not have a wonderful time staying with us at Perkins Cove Cottage. We would, however, like to clarify several issues brought up in this review.
First of all, our property (as advertised) is a “cottage” – although it is nearly 1200 sq. ft., it is not a villa. Instead, Perkins Cove Cottage is comfortable and cozy, tucked away in a quiet, residential neighborhood with easy access to Perkins Cove, Ogunquit Village, the Marginal Way, and the beaches.
In terms of the amenities, there is nothing “owner installed” in the entire Cottage (we wish we were so skilled!). We believe that owner involvement in the care and presentation of the Cottage is one of our Cottage’s assets. We also check in several times during the week to make sure all is going well. If this guest had told us of the sink problem when it first appeared, rather than waiting until check-out, we could have had it fixed immediately. As it turned out, our plumber came right over (along with our cleaning crew), and it was fixed within two hours of her departure.
The Cottage is well-suited to inviting family or friends for short stays during the rental week; however, for insurance as well as sound property management reasons, we do need to know who will be staying on our property, including dates of stay. In fact, a section to fill in this important information for all guests is part of the contract.
Finally, we are unsure as to how we are responsible for the hot weather during this particular guest’s stay, or the tides at Ogunquit Beach. Actually, Ogunquit was ranked New England's #1 beach town in the July 2012 Yankee Magazine. There are several parking lots at the beach as well as trolley access; alternatively, Little Beach is an easy 8-10 minute walk from our property.
But don’t just listen to us about how great Perkins Cove Cottage is - please refer as well to our other reviews. The vast majority of our guests love our Cottage and want to (and many do) come back again!
