This house is perfect for a quiet family getaway. It is secluded located right next to the river with very few neighbors in sight. The scenery is beautiful and very peaceful. We used it for our Thanksgiving holiday. It was very spacious, clean, and large enough for us to cook and visit in the kitchen and living room area. Although, the weather was a little cool, we were still able to enjoy outside and fishing at the dock. The children and adults loved the downstairs screened porch with the ping pong table. We had several ping pong championships! The owners were very kind and actually mailed back some jewelry that I accidently left there. We would definitely return again!
My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights and didn't want to leave. The home is located on 5 acres on the banks of the Fowl River. It is truly a place to get away from it all. Beautiful screened in porch overlooking the river and marshlands. Perfect for watching the river and sunsets. A covered front porch was perfect for watching the early morning sunrise and the deer in late afternoon. Home is clean, well maintained and pleasant. A fishing dock is located a short distance from the house. I spent several hours there catching fish. The bite was fast and furious. Fun!
While the location is secluded, it is a short, pleasant drive to Dauphin Island and the Gulf Coast and all that it offers. It is also located within 20 minutes of Bellingrath Gardens, a wonderful place to visit.
The nearest neighbor is Zirlotts Seafood. They are located about 1/4 mile away and made obtaining shrimp and crabmeat very easy. The Zirlotts live there and also have their seafood store on site. The stuffed shrimp are fabulous.
Highly recommended for folks that want to get away from it all.
We stayed at the River Cottage with our friends (another couple) and our two little kids. It was a spacious and clean house with all the comforts. It was very quiet and relaxing and a great place to be with little kids and not have to worry about them running into the road or getting into all sorts of trouble. We had a great time and loved the large, bright rooms and easy access to all the local spots. We also want to thank Julie for being so informative and also for sending the deposit refund so fast. Sometimes one has to wait a long time before getting the security deposit back but Julie was just so prompt. Thank you Julie and we hope to be back someday for another relaxing vacation!
This was our first time to stay on the river instead of the island, and I have to say we had the most relaxing vacation here! This "cottage" is actually a spacious 3 bedroom 3 bath house. The furnishings are modern and comfortable, the beds slept like a dream and the kitchen is fully stocked with everything you could need. This is also one of the cleanest houses we have stayed in. We grilled steaks one night so I can vouch that the grill is sparkling clean! There was even an extra tank of gas for the grill, just in case. :) We ordered seafood from Zirlotts next door, they were very kind and had it waiting at the house for us. The stuffed shrimp are wonderful and individually frozen so you can cook a few each evening to go along with your meals. The lump crab and crab claws were super fresh! We also enjoyed a great dinner at Beaudeans and Dauphin Island BBQ is always good. We brought our boat around from Dauphin Island, which takes about an hour or so if you come down the Fowl River. It is a pleasant ride but watch the tides as the river can be very shallow in some areas. We literally spent hours on the screened-in back porch, watching the birds during the day and the stars at night. We saw waterfowl you don't usually see on the island, including an osprey with his fish dinner. Turns out the osprey nest is just up the river a bit, we found it when we were out in our boat. Our favorite time was spent on the porch listening to a thunderstorm, then afterwards the chorus of a million frogs. Bring your bug spray if you plan to walk down to the dock, the horseflies will be waiting for you LOL I used Deep Woods Off and they didn't bother me a bit, hubby had to make a run for it! Julie is awesome to work with, even with only 3 hours notice she was able to get us in without a hitch! We will definitely be back!
We spent this past weekend in the river cottage to celebrate 2 January birthdays (mine & a friend's). Every year we've chosen a different place for a weekend getaway around our birthdays & would get together with another friend we went to nursing school with - we were "the 3 Nursekateers" ;) We've been camping (too cold in January!) & to Gulf Shores (not ideal in January either), but when we found this cottage on VRBO.com we knew it would be perfect for a January vacation! (and it was) This place might become our new birthday tradition! We brought kayaks & had a nice day paddling on the river - pretty scenery & saw lots of birds. We enjoyed the pingpong table too - and had a really competitive pingpong tournament the last night we were there :) This home provides plenty to do for those who like an "active" vacation, as well as a "relaxing" getaway in its secluded location surrounded by nature - the dock provides a great place for gazing at the stars at night, and the back porch for viewing gorgeous sunsets every evening. If anyone else is looking for a winter getaway on the coast, I would definitely recommend this cottage! I'm sure this place is a great vacation spot any time of year as well. Thank you Julie for providing all the info we needed for a great vacation! The directions to the home were easy to follow & it was nice having the list of recommendations of places to eat/things to do that you sent. We bought all our groceries from the Walmart you mentioned & tried one of the restaurants (Baudeans) on our way to the cottage. I would definitely recommend the alligator appetizer from Baudeans - they give you a good amount too. The river cottage & views were as beautiful as the pictures, & the furniture/beds were comfortable too. We were able to cook all of our meals at the cottage in the fully equipped kitchen that had everything we could need - including a crockpot & blender. When we went to use the grill it was really dirty/moldy - but the kitchen was so nice we didn't mind cooking our hamburgers inside. Also, one of the light fixtures under the house didn't work so at night the lighting wasn't great around the pingpong table - but it was enough to still be able to play & we still had a great time. Overall it was a great birthday weekend & I would love to celebrate my birthday here again!
My family and i recently took a week vacation in this home. The home is so beautiful and very comfortable. The baby slept through the night in the home and now that we are back home shes back to waking every few hours. lol. We were able to catch crabs on the dock which was so fun. The kids were able to run around and play outside with no worries of cars passing. We would love to come back to this home in the future.
Located about 15 minutes from the beautiful white sandy beaches of Dauphin Island, this hideaway is on West Fowl River. Located just downriver from beautiful Bellingrath Gardens, it's a nature lover's paradise! Jump in a kayak and explore the river, or just cast a line from the dock. Located along the Alabama Coastal Birding trail, this cottage is a great spot to view all types of birds.
You're 30 minutes from Mobile and all the attractions there, and a short drive to Dauphin Island where you can visit historic Fort Gaines, the Audubon Bird Sanctuary, the Estuarium (sea lab and aquarium), and of course the beautiful white sandy beaches.
