Photos and Description of the Tybee Island vacation rental 1 bedroom, 1 bath apartment, sleeps 4

Newly refurbished and redecorated Condo Banana in HOT (Home of Travelers) Coral House on Tybee Island Wireless DSL Internet service. You don't cross any street to get to the beach. We are the 3rd house off the beach; that is, two houses are between HOT Coral House and the beach. We are less than 1 block from a public beach access, which is an elevated wooden walkway that starts at our street (2nd Ave) and crosses about 50 feet of dunes before ending on the beach. We have a beach wagon (similar to a Radio Flyer) that you can load your beach gear on and pull onto the beach. Bikes are also available to guests --- a great way to explore the island. A queen bed in the bedroom and a queen sofa-bed in the living room can sleep up to 4 people. For added comfort, central air conditioning is supplemented by a window air conditioner on the west side of the house. Condo Banana is on the 1st floor just 3 steps up from the street and it is all on one level.

Restaurants Nearby: Within a block: 1) McElwhee's Seafood, 2) Thai & Hawaiian Cuisine 3) Sundae Cafe - a hole-in-the-wall, white-tablecloth, Gourmet restaurant. Sundaes? Nah. (go figure) But The Sugar Shack has great ones. 4) The Sugar Shack - a decidedly downscale, inexpensive place that serves a good breakfast, sandwiches, and hand- dipped ice cream. Indoor or covered outdoor dining.

The 2 Lighthouses: Two lighthouses less than 3 miles apart but so radically different in character. As you approach Tybee Island, you see the impressive Tybee Light in the distance. Tall, dark, and handsome with a white cummerbund. He was honored a couple of years ago when he got his own US postage stamp. (In lighthouse circles that is akin to an Oscar.) But then as you cross the Lazaretto bridge onto Tybee Island, you look down to the left and blink. Is that a lighthouse in the water? Indeed it is. That's plucky little Cockspur Lighthouse. Weathered, plain white masonry. Not flashy at all, except ... At every high tide Cockspur stands in the ocean well off-shore. Only at low tide does the stony spur appear that supports the little lighthouse. A firm foundation after all.

Lost in the 40's/50's: So far the quaint shopping district near the pier has pretty much escaped the wrecking ball. Witness Arby's --- Tybee Island's only fast food restaurant. This is pretty much what Arby's looked like when they began in the early 60's. As for shopping, no Sak's here. We're talking beach shopping: T-shirts, souvenirs, Sno-Cones, umbrella drinks, seafood. But remember, for culture and serious shopping, there is colorful, historic Savannah, just 20-25 minutes away. Recommended reading: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, an amusing look at Savannah's high- and low-life (about 2 years on the NY Times nonfiction best seller list). HOT Coral House is located about mid-beach between south beach (home of the pier and shopping) and north beach ( home of the majestic Tybee Light and the former Ft. Screven, now a museum).

Other Activities: Climbing Lighthouse

What a wonderful place!

Review Submitted: October 19, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
My family stayed in this unit for a week and had a great time. There were plenty of dishes, linens, towels, etc. in the house, and the shape of this apartment made it very quiet even with other families staying in the other two units. We did not have anyone above us or next to the bedroom. The whole beach area on Tybee is worth seeing, but we realized that the beach access from Coral House is particularly good. This area is quieter and less populated than other parts of the island. We never had more than half a dozen other people on our stretch of beach at any one time. We also came home with 20 good sized whelk shells that we picked up at high tide. The $3.00 a day bicycle rental is the best deal in town. We pedaled all over the island. We would definitely come back and stay again!

Great place!

Tybee Lover North Texas
Review Submitted: September 10, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
My husband and I stayed at Condo Banana inside Coral House for 5 days, and it was lovely! Coral house is divided into 3 separate rental properties, Condo Banana being one of the three. Our portion included a queen-size bed and a pull-out sofa bed, both of which were comfortable and could accommodate 2 people each. The house was well-stocked with pots, pans, magazines, movies and even board games. Our stay was very enjoyable; the house was well-decorated and bright, it was situated at a perfect spot on North Beach, and was very close to the Tybee attractions. The beach was approximately 5 minutes away (walking), and there were plenty of people swimming and fishing nearby. The beach was not crowded, and I did not see any signage designating the area as "no swimming." The owner was very nice and seemed to want to make our stay as pleasant as possible. I would highly recommend this property to anyone wanting to get the most out of their Tybee experience!

Great & Affordable Gettaway

Satisfied OK Girl Owasso, OK
Review Submitted: September 9, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
My husband & I, along with another couple stayed 4 nights the last week of August. Other than the rainy weather we had a fantastic time. The condo was fully stocked with everything we needed. The grass was a little high while we were there, but it had been raining for quite some time, so it couldn't have been mowed. There seemed to be a lot of mosquito's in and around our condo, but we are from OK so, we are used to it. :-) Condo Banana was bright and the decor was fun! The only thing I would reccomend is maybe getting rid of one of the large white tables and adding more cabinets for storage of guests clothes and food. The swimming and non swimming beaches were both within walking distance. They were uncrowded and clean. We were able to walk to the south end of the island one morning and watch the dolphins as we stood on the beach. At times, they were about 15-20 ft in front of us. There were several restaurants on the island to choose from. Our favorite was The Crab Shack. We also visited Seaside Sweets EVERY night for their, oh so delicious, gelato!! I would absolutely reccomend you visit these 2 places. Also, be sure to climb the lighthouse. The view from the top is amazing. When we had questions or needed something, we just called Ted and he took care of it. This was, by far, one of the most inexpensive vacations we have been on. Yet, still fun and family friendly. We plan on returning with our children in a couple years. Thank you for everything Ted!
