Our family has owned this building for 27 years. We moved our professional offices to the second floor and opened a bar/restaurant on the ground floor.
Isabel purchased this apartment in 1987
The building is family-run, so there is usually someone around who can assist you and answer questions.
AquaLoft's airy feeling and great light invites lofty thoughts and can inspire great writing or artwork. Our friends and guests contribute artwork and designs for a fulfilling stay and local experience.
El Palomar ('the dovecot') has a more subdued charm. It feels more like a bird's nest in the trees.
My husband and two of our friends enjoyed a great week in Old San Juan at this apartment. We were supposed to come on a Wednesday and (because of huge snow storm) ended up needing to come a day early. Isabel (who was helpful and responsive to questions and e-mails throughout) got back to us immediately and let us come a day early despite short notice. When we arrived, there was a basket full of Pina Colada fixings and a lovely note urging us to forget the snow and enjoy the warm weather. Rosinda, Isabel's assistant, was also friendly and helpful.
The apartment is, as suggested, enormous. It is also very comfortable, and you feel at home right away. I can't say enough about the location - it is on one of the prettiest blocks in the whole city. It is a block away from the great restaurants at El Convento hotel and proximate to all the great things in the old city. It is also only minutes away from historic El Morro on foot. This place is a great pick for your San Juan vacation!
My husband and I ventured to old San juan on a whim, needing to escape the horrible winter. Having little knowledge of what San juan had to offer we weren't sure what to expect and chose Aqua Loft based on the reviews on HomeAway... We chose RIGHT! The owners were super friendly and welcoming, the apartment was so spacious and clean, and the location could not have been better!! We are already talking about a return trip. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for an enchanting escape from the continental doldrums!
I never imagined living in such a charming apartment! Old and new, cosy and modern, fun and lovely... This loft is even better than the pictures suggest; Old San Juan is great to visit, but you will find yourself not wishing to leave the apartment. Clean, sunny, breazy, such original decoration, respecting the environment, big comfortable bed, lofty roof, nice terrace to a silent street, feels like a real home. Well furnished kitchen, lots of cooking utensiles, such a beautiful table! The owners are so friendly and truly loving the place they offer. Lots of suggestions to enjoy the cultural life of San Juan, really connected to the city life. If I look at the pictures again... I will have to run back there!
The location was excellent, we loved Old San Juan! From sight-seeing (El Morro, Castillo de San Cristobal, Paseo de la Princesa and much more...) to Caribbean architecture and beautifully and vibrantly painted homes to grocery shopping and excellent restaurants - so much is here! We felt completely safe, people were helpful and friendly, and were serenaded many a night in our own lovely neighborhood park. We truly felt like this was our "home" while in Puerto Rico - even better than described. We did have a car and although we thought there might be a problem finding parking, we always had luck (it helps to be good at parallel parking into fairly tight spots) and even enjoyed having to walk a few blocks from where we parked. Thanks to Isabel who helped us out before our arrival (sent information/articles about San Juan) and to Rosie who helped us once we arrived. We would definitely recommend Casa Cabana to anyone looking for a true Old San Juan experience!
My partner and I are veteran travelers to OSJ and yet Casa Cabana provided a unique new experience on this visit; spacious, bright, private, casual, clean and comfortable, the interiors were well-appointed with a balanced mix of modern and traditional furnishings and the owner went out of her way to be personable, available and helpful.
Situated in the rear of the multi-tenant building, the apartment is ideally located, literally steps from El Convento and the Cathedral; the best shops and the main square (with liquor, grocery and drugstore) are within a few blocks (a 5-10 minute walk)and OSJ's Governor's Mansion and Main Gate are less than 500 feet away, affording an historic waterside stroll not to be missed.
The quiet apartment is beautifully laid out on three interior floors with a two-story, skylit Living Room with ceiling fans, well-appointed Kitchen and Half Bath, Guest Room with fan, overlooking the Living Room from the second floor, and secluded rooftop deck off the generous air-conditioned Master Bedroom. We strongly recommend you consider this as an alternate to dockside, cookie-cutter hotels or overpriced "name" inns.
Note: The apartment is on the second floor (translation 2 1/2 stories up) and two sets of stairs inside the apartment make climbing a daily part of the experience. The builiding's elevator was temporarily out of commission at the time of our visit.

This apartment is not a hotel, so the reviewer that declined 5 stars probably had misguided expectations. This is a huge, spacious Home, a place to house, entertain and feed your family and/or friends while visiting a historic piece of Puerto Rico. The beds are truly comfortable, with high quality linens so you can rest well. The location is convenient to all that attracts tourists to Old San Juan, and feels safe and secure. There is even a cart to help you bring groceries from the store that is conveniently nearby. Isabel is right - one of the best paellas you'll ever have is just up the tiny cobblestone street.
The open courtyard adjacent to this beautifully decorated and comfortably furnished place makes it uniquely Puerto Rican; there are more coqui singing here at night than anywhere except maybe the rainforest. It is truly a magical tropical experience. This is a warm tropical climate, so the giant fans and the bedroom air conditioner are nice touches for those of us not accustomed to such weather. We are a group of near-chefs and found the kitchen very well equipped and had many fine meals at home. Rosie's recommendations were spot on and she led us to some of the best coffee we've ever had. The Casa Cabana binder is loaded with helpful information.
There are no maids, no room service, no one to turn your bed down, and we like it that way. You make this place your own and appreciate your comfortable surroundings, and you will create your own 5 star experience like we did. Be aware, if you have physical disabilities, this could be a challenging home as there are many stairs to help you work off all the fried foods you may want to indulge in...mmm, I wish I could have a crab-filled alcapurria right now.
AquaLoft is an airy urban space with a casual and relaxed environment. We strive for a creative ambience by recycling, reusing, salvaging, or building from scratch. AquaLoft is also the exhibition space for our artistic work, such as photographs and wall sculptures. As such, it is an ongoing creative project in which our guests participate as well. We encourage you to get inspired here!
Old San Juan is a charming colonial town surrounded by fortified walls. Cobblestone streets, historic sites, museums, and forts capture your imagination no matter your age. Old San Juan's many coffeeshops and restaurants are not to be missed. Many cultural events, activities and workshops for adults and children constantly take place within walking distance (plus many are free!). Beautiful beaches within walking distance as close as just outside the city walls across from the Senate Capitol Building and bit further west, El Escambron, a Blue Flag Beach. There are outdoor and indoor yoga facilities in the area.
Other Activities: outdoor public basketball and tennis courts within fort grounds and with views of the San Juan Bay.
