Guestbook comments from the owner

Celine and David are the owners of the property. We purchased this 150+ old village house with nothing but a kitchen sink and a toilet and turned it into a very comfortable home. We have raised two daughters and now have two grandsons and we live on beautiful Whidbey Island in Washington state.

Celine & David purchased this house in 2007

Having spent some of my childhood in the area with my grandmother, it was an impulsive purchase during a vacation in 2006. My husband has also always loved the area and we are anxious to explore the area further now that we have done so much work on the house.

If you ever wondered, "What is it like in one of these homes with shutters?", then staying in this lovely rental in Quillan will answer your query. The essence of the past is ingrained in the home, yet modern conveniences make your stay comfortable. Whether bringing some wine and cheese to the river or walking around the corner for a fabulous meal, this rental grants you the opportunity to vacation in a manner that pleases you. The house was clean, the owners were responsive and so throw open those shutters and enjoy a beautiful area of France!

COSY DELIGHTFUL AND WELCOMING LITTLE MAISON IN A CHARMING CORNER OF FRANCE

  • 5 of 5
Excellent place to stay as very close to all amenities-shopping and lovely restaurants and it is fascinating watching and listening to the river Aude really close to the house! There are lovely walks close by up into the hills and so many wonderful places to see- castles high up on hill tops, gorges with breath taking views, plateaus with beautiful birds of prey and access to a real winter wonderland on the way to Ax les Therms !
The little house is very comfortable, the bathrooms are lovely and the cooking facilities are great-we had some lovely meals! We would recommend this property to everyone and thank the owners for letting us share their home in France!

CUTE HOUSE IN QUILLAN, LANGUEDOC-ROUSSILLON

  • 4 of 5
2 couples stayed a week in this very convenient and well-appointed house in a small town 50 km. from the Spanish border. We took advantage of the market and bakeries in the town. We had 2 lovely hikes right from our house and found restaurants very close that had reasonable prices and excellent food. (The Galerie was one.). The house itself had 2 large bedrooms and bathrooms with heated towel racks, hair dryers and a washer. We also were able to hook up our electrical devices as they had a convenient system that would take more than one device. There were maps and lots of info on the town and surrounding area. I would stay there again!

TERRIFIC TWO MONTHS

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I spent two marvelous months (July & August) at Celine & Dave’s house. All of the previous compliments are richly deserved. Everything was clean, organized and ready for occupancy. Celine bordered on spectacular in responding to concerns, questions or potential issues of all variations. There is even a broad collection of maps, brochures and other sightseeing thoughts if one hasn’t lined up an itinerary.

It was splendid to have modern conveniences in a home stretching back possibly 150-200 years – the winding wooden staircase to the second and third floor added a special magic. The location, in the old village with tiny winding streets, a view of old castle ruins on a hill, minutes walking distance to restaurants, bakeries, butchers, plus a small market and the bus/train station could not have been better. (Two larger supermarkets are a very short drive outside the village.) One delight every morning is to turn right out the front door, walk for about 10 seconds and view the Aude river pouring over rapids and gaze at the Pyrenees, which may or may not have some cloud cover – then start your day.

As a launching point to explore the beautiful country side, visit castles, abbeys, prehistoric caves, the Mediterranean coast or just spin off into some little village that looks appealing, this is a perfect location. This is all complimented by friendly folks and a setting that relaxes even the “laid back” individual.

Our biggest challenge was battling the urge to invest in some local property. So, be warned. There seemed to be endless nightly activities in the town, including the Tour de France coming through. We very highly recommend Celine & Dave’s place in Quillan.

Owner's Response: We very much enjoyed having this couple for the full two months and getting updates on their adventures. We look forward to meeting them someday in the future. It is always fun to see guests get to know the local residents and embrace the culture while staying in Quillan.

LOVELY THREE WEEK STAY!

  • 4 of 5
Celine and David's house was exactly as advertised. It is very obviously being lovingly restored, modernized, but retaining alot of its old character. The house was spotless and ready for us.Finding the key and opening up went just as directed, and without any difficulty. The square was often full of cars and we often had to park by the river, but never had any difficulty finding a spot. The smaller the car the better when travelling in , and parking in ,the small villages of France!
The lilacs were in full bloom when we arrived in Quillan, some 6 weeks ahead of our season in Nova Scotia.. We had a great variety of weather. The Aude river which runs behind the house , was full to capacity, with the winter run-off well along its way.It was fun to watch the kayakers testing their skills.
Celine and David, the owners were extremely prompt in replying to all our enquiries.Paying by Paypal is a great advantage when renting overseas, and we wouldn't hesitate to use it again.
We found the village of Quillan very pleasant, enjoyed the market days (as well as those in nearby villages).By the end of our stay we were starting to meet local folks. The French were very welcoming!
We used Quillan as a base to visit many historical sites- the UNESCO world heritage city of Carcassonne, the Midi Canal and the many fortifications of the Cathars, and much more. The scenery everywhere was stunning!
We were particularly fascinated by the many people from other parts of Europe who were retired and making their homes in Quillan. And very happy there.
All in all, a great stay, and happy memories.

LIVING THE LIFE

  • 5 of 5
I had the pleasure of staying in Quillan at this house near the Aude River for one week in March. Upon arrival there was chocolate and a bottle of wine sitting in the center of the table bringing a warm and welcomed gesture to the end of a long journey from the US to southern France. A well organized binder full of information was also nearby. All the pictures posted of the house and Quillan are exact to what I saw. The house was very clean and well maintained.
I loved being a part of living with the local people who stop by the Pastrie Shop only to greet their friends in the Square with a greeting of 'Bonjour'.The Gare, public transportation (train/bus), is only a 5 min. walk from the house. One of my favorite places to eat, or drink cappuccinos, was at the 'Cafe Restaurant At The Gare'. There is a dining area in the back of the cafe where they serve excellent food from Duck to Trout, and desert so delicious I tipped the bowl to get the last drop.
From Castles to the rocky Pyrenees Mountains, staying in this house in beautiful Quillan left me with warmth in my heart for a lifestyle that appears unchanged.

Quillan is a small town and commune in the Aude département, in southwestern France located at the foothills of the Pyrenees, on the road between Carcassonne and Perpignan. Located at the top of the Haute Valley of the Aude, close to the mountains, this is an excellent area for hiking and mountain biking as well. Horseback Riding is available nearby and the views are amazing. Take a short trail ride or sign up for multiple days.

Carcassonne is a must see and just one hour away. The medieval walled town lies on the right bank of the River Aude and is featured on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. It has 52 towers and 2 rings of town walls making a total of 3 km of battlements. There is no restriction on access to this area of Carcassonne. It is still home today to its population of approximately 120 and it boasts a large number of shops and craftsmen.
