About David and Meredith Vaughn

My wife and I are lovers of the southwest and Taos area and found a property to build a custom home in 2000. Our family designed and built the house using local materials and techniques to the delight of many guests who have enjoyed the peaceful surroundings at the place we call the Retreat at Rancho Canyon.

David and Meredith Vaughn purchased this house in 2000

Why David and Meredith Vaughn chose Taos

Just outside Taos, but next to 100,000 acres of Carson National forest with great views, this property and area was love at first sight.

What makes this house unique

A great passive solar location with privacy, views, it has it all. We have added on to the house and provided new features which make it a true Retreat property!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Incredible home David and Meredith.

My family was fortunate enough to stay at the beautiful and private 'Retreat at Rancho Canyon' over Mother's Day weekend. My mother and father were visitng from the midwest and we thought we'd treat them to a get-away while they were visiting Colorado, they we're thrilled with the accomodations.

The home and the property could not be better outlined in the description, great views from every room, thoughtful space planning and decorating..the list goes on. It is evident when you enter the courtyard patio that David has put his architectural background to great use in the design and layout of each aspect of the home, and he, along with his wife Meredith and son Jordan, have done an excellent job decorating, designing and building furniture to compliment the SW theme. From the outdoor pond, waterfall, and firepit to the cozy living room and wonderful sleeping quarters the attention to detail is impeccable. It seems they have thought through every piece of this dream home, even going so far as to provide recycling, composting, and water saving measures to ensure the enjoyment of resources for all those that follow in our path. I promise, you will not be dissappointed during your stay.

The location of the home is also very convenient to town yet isolated enough to feel like you are in a secluded forest. Just 5 miles from Taos and all of the shops and museums it is the perfect answer to those looking for serenity, yet wanting to be close enough the experience the restaurants, museums, the pueblo, and the unique 'flavor' of the southwest.

Thanks again David and Meredith for sharing your wonderful home with us, we look forward to another visit in the future.

Awesome Spring Break!!

  • of 5

We stayed 5 nights over spring break with my 7 and 9 year old children. The house is perfect for one family. Rancho Retreat is warmly decorated but simple enough that it is child friendly. We enjoyed roasting marshmallows and the gorgeous views from the patio as well as nights full of star gazing from the luxurious hot tub. Beds really are comfortable and cooks will appreciate the well equipped kitchen that had all the basic equipment as well as spices and oils. Cleaning supplies and paper towels were also provided. We've found that to be uncommon in rental houses so it was particularly nice to find them.

In the area are a variety of things to do. My kids were thrilled to explore the woods around the house which still had some snow. We hiked around Carson National Forrest, skied Angel Fire, snow tubed at Taos ski Basin, visited Bandalier national park and enjoyed food and shopping in Taos. If you have young kids don't miss Twirl play space. It's a fantastic in-town park with climbing structures, treehouse, lego wall , playroom and craft space attached to a really cute and ecclectic toy store.

As a newcomer to Meditation I was intrigued by the meditation hut in the photos and it did not disappoint. It's a true sanctuary and you can feel the positive energy as soon as you enter. I am inspired to create a similar space at home where I can feel so at peace!

All around I can't imagine a better trip for all of us.

Many thanks to the Vaughns for sharing it!

Look no further.

  • 5 of 5

If you want a beautiful, yet comfortable and relaxing home while you're in Taos, look no further. My dog and I drove in from Colorado to meet some friends that were coming up from El Paso. We all stayed in this house and felt at home immediately. I was fortunate enough to meet the owners, David and Meredith, briefly when I arrived. They are clearly passionate about this home, which shows up in every detail that you'll experience while staying there. It is truly a retreat and the views are outstanding. I'd love to stay here again when I return to Taos.

Perfect family getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We just came home from a delightful stay at Retreat at Rancho Canyon. I rarely write reviews, but couldn't help myself with this one. The house was everything in the pictures and more. Comfy, cozy, breathtaking views, fully stocked kitchen and spacious rooms. We would go back in a heartbeat! You can't go wrong here. The pictures are wonderful, but the place is even better in person. Skied at Taos & took daily road trips to Bandelier, Santa Fe, and Georgia O'Keefe's home. An awesome vacation.

Paradise near Taos, NM

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for a girls getaway this spring, and I found the perfect place near Taos, NM in Rancho Canyon. The scenery is beautiful and the house is exquisite. The radiant heat in the floors were wonderful as I tend to get chilly easily.

The house was just as listed, however, even the description can't do the place justice. It was beautiful and very clean. I am an outdoorsy person and I loved hiking the trails right behind the property. Also, the location is perfect for those wanting to ski or check out Taos which we did.

This was my first experience using homeaway.com and renting a vacation home, and it turned out perfectly. David was always available by phone if I had a question or anything. Will be looking to return to this little oasis again.

Thank you David and Meredith.
