KEPHARTS' HAWAIIAN OCEAN-VIEW HALE

Kohala Estates House Rental Photos and Description

5BR Oceanview Vacation Rental Kamuela, Hawaii USA

This five-bedroom/three-bath home sits on five acres of land in the Kohala Estates. We specifically designed the house as a family vacation gathering spot, and we built it ourselves in 1989. Its high ceilings and 760 square feet of windows make it particularly light and airy. Tradewinds and 13 ceiling fans will help to keep you cool. The kitchen and the master bedroom have 180-degree ocean views. You can also see the Kohala Mountains, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Maua Loa, and nearly the entire Kohala Coast. With luck and timing, you can spot Hawaiian spinner dolphins, humpback whales, or the occasional green flash. We can't guarantee blue skies and no mosquitoes; but your odds are better here than anywhere else in the central Pacific. The house sits in the rain shadow of the Kohala Mountains, and annual rainfall totals are typically in the low single digits! We have tried hard to make our house a comfortable 'home away from home' for our guests. The library boasts plenty of books and movies.

Extras: You'll find enough kitchenware and linens to choke a flea market! Kids will enjoy several cubic feet of Legos, building blocks, and Kinex. Puzzles and board games abound. Binoculars, beach towels, coolers, beach chairs, and hammocks are left out for your use. You won't need to bring much besides your clothes and your camera.

Many of our guests consider this 'their' second home; and accordingly, our most popular times can be booked over a year in advance. Fall and late spring usually have the best availability.

You will also enjoy a VCR in every bedroom, a satellite TV in the living room, a phone for making local calls, and WiFi Internet access.

Location, Location, Location: Most of our guests appreciate where the house is located. It is in a semi-rural neighborhood, which has no street lights and a myriad of stars at night. Weather is usually warm and dry. Within easy driving distance to the Big Island's premiere beaches and golf courses, it is also conveniently located between Kailua-Kona and Hilo. Good restaurants are only three miles away. Neighboring houses are quite a distance away, and the neighborhood is quiet and safe.

The ocean view is spectacular, and in the winter months you can watch the humpback whales right from the lanai. Sunsets are beautiful, and some times you will even catch a green flash.

Home away from home: The house is very comfortable. Many of our guests say that they feel right at home as soon as they walk in the door. The living room walls are lined with books. Each room has a television and a VCR/DVD player. You may bring your own DVDs or videos or watch some of the 600 videos available in the house. The living room has satellite TV. The floor plan allows for privacy as well as communal activities.

Ideal family vacation home!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at Hale Kephart and it was perfect. We were on a family vacation with 13 of us total, including 5 kids. We used the crib provided at the house and it worked great. The location of the house was ideal, being centrally located on the island and only a few minutes from Hapuna Beach, which turned out to be our favorite. We are from a small town and absolutely loved how the house was located away from the crowds and in a very quiet and peaceful setting. It was perfect for us. The house had everything we needed and more - plenty of dishes, towels, appliances, books, movies, games, puzzles and more. We loved having everything we needed already there and used the beach chairs and boogie boards every time we went to the beach. The washer and dryer were very handy, as were the all the coolers. The layout of the house is absolutely perfect for families, with a huge common area to gather and cook and visit, and the lanai is gorgeous. We saw whales from the lanai not only every day, but every time we simply looked toward the ocean, and the sunsets each night were incredible. What a view!! The Kohala area is breezy and the house stayed cool every night even if it got warm during the afternoon. Everything about the house was clean and well-maintained and well represented in the description and photos as well as in previous reviews. The owners were very friendly and easy to work with. We can't say enough good things about this property! If/when we take another vacation the the Big Island, we will definitely stay here, and we will absolutely recommend it to our friends. It is a truly amazing home! We felt fortunate to have found it.

PERFECT house for family vacation

  • 5 of 5
This was our family's first vacation to Hawaii and it was an amazing experience. Part of that experience was being able to stay at Hale Kephart. We brought our kids and our grandkids - there were a total of 14 of us and Hale Kephart accommodated all of us comfortably and at an incredibly affordable rate. The Kepharts provide a wide variety of amenities from well-stocked kitchen items to beach accessories including boogie boards, chairs, towels, etc. The house is located in the Kohala area, which is away from the "touristy" areas but we are from a small town and enjoyed the peace and quiet. The house is also conveniently located only 5 minutes from Spencer Park Beach (great for small kids and offers some shade) and 10 minutes from Hapuna Beach, which is one of the best beaches on the island (great for boogie boarding).
Our family had a wonderful time and we are planning our next trip to the Big Island. We all decided unanimously that we will stay at Hale Kephart again because we won't find a more perfect house!!

WONDERFUL family vacation!!

  • 5 of 5
This was our first stay at Hale Kephart and definitely won't be our last. We are a family of six with 4 children (age 16 down to 2). Just about any amenity you can think of is provided. In addition to all the usual stuff, there is a vast collection of books and DVDs for those days when the kids (and us!) needed some relaxation time.
The house is not in Kona so if you're looking for proximity to all the shops and restaurants, this may not be for you. However, for us this was a plus. The house's location is perfect for going to the beach (Hapuna Beach), travel to the north coast, and travel to the Waimea and Hamakua areas. The neighborhood is quiet, safe, and absolutely perfect for families traveling with kids. At the end of a long day of activities, it's hard to beat just sitting on the lanai watching the spectacular sunsets!
The Kepharts are fabulous hosts. Without divulging any personal details, I would just like to say with their background and ours, meeting them was a perfect fit. Our long-term plan is to eventually move to the Big Island and Don was very helpful in providing information about construction on the Big Island.
Last but certainly not least, I have to mention the moringa trees: These are trees next to the garage that my mother (from India) recognized as bearing vegetables perfect for making a stew called sambar. We were able to find most of the ingredients and made some from scratch! Delicious.
Overall, staying at Hale Kephart was a very enjoyable experience and I would strongly recommend this place.

GREAT place for a family vacation!!

  • 5 of 5
We just returned from a family vacation with our daughter, 2 grand-daughters (and all their spouses) and FOUR great-grandchildren (with another one on the way), a total of 12 people. I cannot conceive of a more nearly perfect place for our group. It is just off the highway, but we could be in a world all our own for all the contacr we had with anyone besides the Kepharts. The kids even had a room all their own. Not that they were lacking for anything to do, but the Kepharts supplied a plethora of new toys and games to keep them occupied. The chest full of hardwood blocks was the hit of the week! There is a full wraparound lanai that the kids truly loved - it was pretty great for the adults too - I don't think we missed a night watching the spectacular sunsets, brilliant clear sky, and even shooting stars too numerous to count. The kids loved to do "nature walks" around the house picking up leaves, flowers, sticks, rocks and all kinds of treasures. The Kepharts supplied everything we could need of want, except of course for groceries (and they even gave us a welcome basket to get us started). Don and Kerrill are great hosts, and their house is a marvel. This is the first time we have tried renting a vacation house. We are long-time RCI members and have always used condos fo rour vacation stays. It just became too difficult to try to arrange 2 or more 2 BR condos on consecutive weeks in Hawaii, so we started looking into home rental. What a happy situation when we found Hale Kephart after looking at literally hundreds of options! I highly, highly reccommend Hale Kepart for your family or group gathering!

Do not miss driving to the north end of the road to the Polulu Valley overlook. (one of Don's reccommendations.) It is beautiful from the overlook, but if you are able to make the moderately strenuous hike down (AND back up) to the black sand beach, you will be rewarded with truly spectacular views and a nearly deserted black sand beach. The black sand here is very fine (not like the coarse sand that was at Kalapana Black Sand beach before it was covered with a thick layer of lava). It is a moderately difficult hike uphill on the return, but my grand-daughter made it carrying a 4 month old baby!!

This is a GREAT value and a BEAUTIFUL home in a spectacular location!! HIGHLY reccommended!!

A great two weeks

  • 5 of 5
Our family of ten enjoyed a fabulous two week stay in early July 2011. There was plenty of room for everybody, the games, DVDs, books were a real plus and enjoyed by all. Owner provided snorkeling equipment and other water sports equipment, beach chairs, towels, etc. The highlight was dining every day, all meals, save one (the trade winds were strong one day), on the lanai where we enjoyed the ocean breezes, the view, watched the sun set, the moon rise, and the stars come out. Great beaches are only minutes away. Highly recommend this home away from home!

Family gathering

  • 5 of 5
This large house was perfect for our family gathering of 20 for 4 days. Very spacious. The kitchen and large lanaii made meals for our large group very doable. There were enough futons, couches and pads in additions to the 5 bedrooms, no one slept on the floor or outside. House is very well stocked for home or beach entertainment and is only minutes away from 3 of the best beaches on the island. I would return here for a group as small as 6 for this is a peacefull area especially so during whale watching season.

Kohala Coast--Kawaihae: The scenery here is breathtaking--five volcanoes in view plus the Kona Coast to the south and the Kohala Coast to the north. The climate is nearly perfect--warm and breezy and dry. Snorkeling is wonderful along the Kohala coast because a coral reef extends out several hundred feet. You can watch the humpbacks breach and blow right from the roadside or the lanai during the winter months. Several premiere golf courses, beaches, and restaurants are within a short drive. The night sky is a gorgeous star scape. The rugged Kohala coast is a spectacular example of Hawaii as it was before it became so developed in other areas.

Other Activities: whale-watching, boogie-boarding, picnicking
