Guestbook comments from the owner

Our family had a wonderful five nights on the houseboat. My 3 kids loved the paddle boat, massage chair, big TV and the jumbo gorilla. It was a very comfortable home and a new experience for us. Thank you Martin for coming by to pump up one of the bicycle tires and helping us with the Wii game.

Many thanks!

Sausalito The Bay Area

I have lived in Sausalito for many years and recently found myself in a situation where I needed a place to stay while friends and family were staying on my houseboat. So, of course, I decided to stay nearby the place I love so much and went to VRBO to see what other houseboats might be available. How lucky I was to come across this one. Being a bit spoiled, I wanted something close to the amenities I enjoy in my home. To my great surprise and satisfaction, I found even much more. Though it didn't have as expansive a view as I enjoy, I loved the cozy lagoon feeling this houseboat offered.

This floating home is one of the nicest I've been in -- very clean, well furnished, excellent television and music components, complete with nice towels, sheets, shampoos, soaps, (even two very nice bathrobes), etc. The kitchen is perfectly equipped with any appliance one might need. Though it is very close to my houseboat, I felt like I was away on a very special vacation and totally enjoyed every minute on it.

Strangely, as I opened the "Review" section here, I noticed a less-than-favorable review from a previous visitor and would like to say that I for one disagree with the minor complaints listed. Most all of the houseboats (almost 500) are located at the north end of Sausalito and are close to freeway access. Myself and my neighbors absolutely adore our unique lifestyle and have adapted to (or ignored) any freeway noise. The payoff comes from the peaceful beauty of the water, the bird life (especially at low tide), the wonderful sunrises and sunsets, and the easy access to the city, Mill Valley, Tiburon, etc. This is a very comfortable houseboat and one of the best offered on VRBO. Some people may have a different idea of houseboat living, but having been a houseboat dweller for more than 25 years now, I can honestly highly recommend this houseboat to you for a very pleasant experience of life on our beautiful bay.

Bad Mojo on Sausalito Houseboat

  • 3 of 5
My GFF and I ventured to Sausalito for a week long getaway and were so looking forward to a few days frolicking on the bay on kayaks and pedal boats. Unfortunately we were not able to do so because the properties water sport equipment were so run down and unusable we ended up wandering around town and sweltering in the heat.

The owner, Susan, was nice enough and was quick to come to our rescue when a stray dog was left at our door step the first night, but the $100 credit was hardly enough to boost up our spirits or confidence in the gentleman who was supposed to be available to us if we "needed anything" or had an issue.

The Good: Great kitchen and living room. Loved the large flat screen TV and the many appliance available to us. We found the espresso machine extremely cool and the supply of coffees and kitchenware great but over whelming. The unique art work was nice as was the books and paintings and cute artifacts placed throughout the house. Master bedroom, bath and guest bathroom were clean and nicely appointed with clean towels and scales.

Location was so so as you are aways from the South end of town and will need a car to get there unless you like a nice hike, but you are close to the neighboring town of Mill Valley.

The Bad: Clutter was everywhere (a knife was on the floor) and things just seemed either out of place or broken... example: kayaks were not safe, pedal boat was not sea worthy nor did it have a steering mechanism. The awesome cellestron celestial telescope while cool to marvel at was inoperable, and the fancy massage chair was straight up broken. What was also disappointing was both the view (of Highway 101) which was extremely noisy, and the location of the houseboat (the back side of the bay facing a swamp and roadway). Lamps were also broken and the BBQ was very corroded and a little skanky. The guest bedrooms were poorly appointed and awkwardly laid out and had very outdated TV's and furnishings.

Conclusion: If you are looking for a unique get-away and have never stayed on an in-famous Sausalito house boat this place may be for you, but if you want a beautiful, romantic view of the San Francisco bay, or want to treat your family and kids to exciting time on kayaks and a well kept vacation rental, then consider another place. But don't take my word for it - ask this owner about the view, the noise level, the furnishings in the guest bedrooms, and a few of your own questions. Consider other Sausalito options

Owner's Response: If you have read this review and are doubtful about the houseboat, I wouldn't blame you.Even with over 30 five star reviews on vrbo, a bad review like this really hurts. I appreciate all the nice things they said, but just have to answer what they call “the bad”. Please see this guests criticisms and compare with quotes from our other reviews.
This guest
“The properties (sic) water sports equipment were (sic) so run down and unusable…”
“Kayaks were not safe, pedal boat was not seaworthy nor did it have a steering mechanism.”
Response: The paddle boat isn't new and gets a lot of use (see below). It’s too bad they didn't understand that it has a typical paddle boat steering stick. They all come this way. Luckily, the guests below had no problem understanding it.
Guest Doris (Granite Bay, Ca)
Our "concierge" Martin was extremely helpful. He got us all set up with the paddle boat and kayaks and we spent almost every day on the water in beautiful Sausalito. The kids really loved it all. The kitchen was wonderful, all the best appliances, accessories and china and glassware. It made dining in really great. All in all it was a great experience and a fun time for all. We couldn't be happier

Thank you for a great kitchen, barbeque grill and beautiful houseboat. Even took the paddleboat out for a spin.

My three grandchildren (17, 15, and 6) and I had five great days of "Camp Grandma" on this beautiful houseboat. The kids loved the kayaks and paddle boat
The kids really enjoyed paddling around the houseboat marina in the provided kayaks.Sausalito is such a beautiful place and is so close to so many fun things.
Thanks so much, we will definitely be back.

“ Location was so so, as you are a ways from the South end of town”
OWNER: The entire houseboat community is in the North end of town with the downtown in the South, so you won’t find a houseboat to rent in Sausalito that isn't here in the houseboat community.
The location can't be beat.
OWNER:There are a lot more, but I'm out of room allowed, but please read our other reviews here on vrbo. You can't please everyone, but we think our 98% five star ratings are pretty good

perfect family vacation!

My three grandchildren (17, 15, and 6) and I had five great days of "Camp Grandma" on this beautiful houseboat. The kids loved the kayaks and paddle boat, and we all enjoyed the Marin sights (Mt. Tam, Muir Woods, Stinson Beach, Sausalito, Tiburon) and the city (the Aquarium and the Rocketboat were big hits). The houseboat is beautifully decorated (I wanted to bring the artwork home) and a comfortable and fun place to relax at the end of the day. This place is not done up as a "rental" -- clearly the owner did it as a place she could enjoy herself. Books, pictures, linens, accessories -- a great find.

Charming houseboat in a unique setting

  • 4 of 5
We spent five days in this rental and entertained family for three of the five days. The houseboat is spacious and eclectically furnished. The art was particularly entertaining. Before our arrival we requested the bicycles be in working order, and the owner actually rented bikes from a local shop for us. The bicycles at the houseboat are children's bikes. We rode the bikes to Sausilito, Tiburon, Mill Valley and beyond. The fireplace was romantic and warming on a cold rainy day. The houseboat pier was spectacular with exotic plantings. We enjoyed more than one glass of wine at the end of the pier.

A reunion of closest friends from 50 years ago was made unforgettable by the environment provided by the Sausalito Houseboat. Never knowing exactly what you will get from an internet rental, this one was exactly as advertised even exceeding our expectations. The setting was unique - cute houseboats spaced along a long plank walkway surrounded by water. The living area and kitchen (where we spent most of our time) had everything we wanted, and, it all worked. The weather was perfect making walking to stores and the town of Sausalito a refreshing and pleasurable experience. As I have already shared with the owner, we will repeat if a trip to the Bay Area is in our future. There are so many things we didn't get to experience, particularly the ferry to San Francisco. But, for now, we will just cherish the memories we captured with our long-time friends.

I guess my luck ran out... the VRBO properties we have rented in the past always turned out to be even better than the description... until this one. The description was about half right and the photos were somewhat misleading. The location was good, but the "gourmet" kitchen was not; the master bedroom was really nice, but the other two were hardly suitable for adults. The bathrooms were stocked with mismatched towels, and the kitchen pots were old/dirty and disorganized. All was tolerable, though disappointing, until the second night when one of the ladies discovered water dripping on the bed from the light fixture!! We called the owner and used a bowl on the bed to catch the water. The owner was sympathetic, but it was too late to get a plumber. The bed could not be used, though. Someone was supposed to be there at 8 AM or 9 AM, but when we left at 11 AM, no one had yet arrived. The owner did offer a $100.00 discount for our inconvenience and sent an invoice confirming the refund, but 10 days have passed and nothing has posted to my account. There has been no response to my emails/phone calls.

Owner's Response: Wow!!
It's hard to respond to a review like this. We have approximately 100 different guests per year so one unhappy person out of 100 isn't too bad. The majority of our reviews are 5 stars. Still it is very upsetting when someone is unhappy for any reason, even though she gave us 3 stars.

In our defense:
We do have a gourmet kitchen. (Past comments for this same kitchen have said it was the highlight of their visit and loved all the appliances, appearance (granite counters, ceramic floors, modern appliances, $1000 microwave, compactor, etc.) the picture of the kitchen on vrbo/homeaway is exactly what it looks like. As to the pots and pans, they aren't brand new but work just fine. If they seemed disorganized to her I would hope she would realize that this is a houseboat and cabinet space is very limited so pots and pans must be stacked.

The houseboat photos are not misleading. I took them myself. They were not altered in any way. Past recent reviews say it looked as good in person as the photos, or even better.

We do have bunk beds in one of the guest rooms but that's because we need to accommodate kids. It is a very nice set and includes a double bed as the bottom bed. Every person who inquires gets a description of the bunk beds. I wish she had said what made them unsuitable.

The mismatched towel comment is hard to understand. Our towels are white and green to match the particular bath colors. They are all new or near-new and our cleaning people know to make sure they all match, are not worn or damaged and are color consistent.

As to the last problem, I received the call late Saturday night and got a plumber there as soon as he could come on Sunday morning, about 11. It turned out to be a small leak in the dishwasher hose under he sink in the kitchen, which is directly over the bedroom. I'm sorry this had to happen, especially on a weekend, but this is a situation that could happen to anyone. (who has never had a leak under the sink?)

As to the discount, I entered a credit with our credit card bank and they said it went through. To make up for the inconvenience I will offer these ladies an additional $100 credit. I just wish they had expressed these thoughts to me at the time because this review was a great surprise, especially since most all our reviews are very good, we are even rated on as one of the best in Sausalito.

There is a lot to see and do in the waterfront area in Sausalito and in the surrounding towns. Nearby are the other houseboat docks. Strolling down these docks (or seeing them from the water in your own private kayak) and looking at the variety of houseboats, some of which are historic, is relaxing and fun. Sausalito is a charming town and the waterfront views, dining and shopping are plentiful. Nearby is another charming walking town: Mill Valley It has quaint shops, a redwood grove park and great dining. Keep on the lookout for famous people, especially rock stars. Also check out tour buses to Muir Woods-an incredible redwood park. Muir Beach is also nearby. Of course, San Francisco is only minutes away over the Golden Gate Bridge using the freeway entrance that is adjacent to the dock

Other Activities: Kayaking, Boating, Water skiing, Wildlife Viewing, Sightseeing, Health/Beauty Spa, Shopping, Windsurfing

Golf: Mill Valley Golf Course (small course but stunningly beautiful) is about 10 minutes from the houseboat. McGinnis in San Rafael and Peacock Gap in San Rafael are about 15 minutes from the houseboat. Plus San Francisco has several just across the Golden Gate Bridge which is 5-10 minutes from the houseboat.

Ski: Lake Tahoe with skiing and casinos is a few hours away
