“The view from San Jacinto is the most sublime spectacle to be found anywhere on this earth.”
-- Sierra Club Founder John Muir (1838-1914)
Finnish design. Finnish logs. Finnish built. Live the Log Home dream...
Old world tradition meets modern-day comforts at Casa Finlandia, a custom-designed four-bedroom, two and a half-bathroom log home in the San Jacinto mountains that is rustic yet elegant, quaint yet grand, sturdy yet charming.
Two full-length balconies provide the perfect setting for entertaining while enjoying the beautiful sunsets overlooking the dense oak and pine forest and the rugged San Jacinto mountain range. The quiet home is perfectly situated between two cul-de-sacs a short walk away from downtown Idyllwild and the Idyllwild Arts school.
The two-story, nearly 2400-square-foot Honka log home contains numerous amenities, including a two-car attached garage, a bright and roomy kitchen, spectacular views from both floors, a towering wood-burning fireplace and cathedral ceilings.
Casa Finlandia’s dining room abuts both the great room and the kitchen, creating an open and airy floor plan. The great room has three tall, nearly floor-to-ceiling windows. On a clear day, the Pacific Ocean sparkles in the distant view. A view of Lake Diamond is much closer. The kitchen includes KitchenAid stainless steel appliances, slab granite countertops and custom-made Alder wood cabinetry.
The main level features the great room, dining room and kitchen, master bedroom and bathroom, a second bedroom that may be converted into a small office or den. This level also has a half-bathroom off the foyer, the attached 515-square-foot garage, a balcony and a wide front porch.
The lower level features two bedrooms, each with a walk-in closet, a full bathroom, laundry facilities, space for a wine cellar or extra storage, a family room and the second balcony that, like the upper balcony, runs the length of the home.
Maple hardwood floors cover the main floor, while Berber carpet on the lower level will keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The home has custom paint and many design details, such as copper capping on logs and balcony posts.
Each room on the main level has exposed log work featuring Honka logs direct from Finland. The Finnish builder took great care in building Casa Finlandia, evidenced in the many extras, such as wood detail and tiled bathrooms.
Six windows in the great room allow for plenty of sunlight. Enjoy perfect temperatures all year round with forced air and heat.

Owners are all from Scandinavia, which is why the cabin is built from imported Finish logs from Honka. We have lived in California for most of our life's and wanted a getaway in the mountains to remind us of home.
Irma Niskala purchased this house in 2008
Total relaxation, crackling fireplace, majestic views... We go here to unwind and relax, and for lovely romantic getaways. Idyllwild is such a romantic little mountain town, with a surprising number of yearly events. Restaurants are good, and eating amidst the pines watching the squirrels of unusual size (SOUS) is just lovely.
We had a great time, it was fun. The views are very nice. The cabin was a great place for us for New Years we are planning on returning late this year.
This is our first time renting a home in Idyllwild and we couldn't have been more pleased with this place and our rental experience. The house was more than spacious enough for our family which included 5 adults, 1 toddler, 1 baby and 2 dogs. Everything was provided for (linens, kitchen utensils, towels, dog bowls, etc.); all we had to bring up was our food and clothes! The interior was very clean and updated and functional for our needs. The views from the deck were stunning and a relaxing place to enjoy coffee early in the morning and wine in the evening. The home was at the top of the mountain so it was extremely peaceful and felt secluded even though the town was a short 5-10 minute drive away. From the beginning, Irma made the rental process easy and was always available to answer questions or concerns. I have already recommended this place to several people and would look no further when deciding on a rental home in Idyllwild!
I've been renting cabins in Idyllwild for 20 years and this is one of the nicest -- if not the nicest -- places I've stayed. The cabin itself is modern and comfortable and the views from the deck are spectacular. With a little creative arranging of the available extra mattresses, we managed to fit three families (6 adults, 6 kids) comfortably. Also, Irma was a pleasure to work with, as she accommodated several special requests and always returned calls/inquiries promptly. I highly recommend this place!
We've stayed at a few places in Idyllwild and this is definitely a favorite, especially for this time of year. It's incredibly cozy and perfect for 4 couples. The fireplace is wonderful and it's nice that the main living room and kitchen are in the same area. The view is spectacular. Everything was in great condition and Irma is easy to work with and very responsive. I highly recommend and will stay there again.
I do not know where to begin. This beautiful house is the best. The location and views are second to none. The booking process was so efficient and seamless with the kind Irma answering all my questions. The house itself is so well equipped and spotlessly clean. The decor, the bed linens, the facilities are all top notch. I was so impressed. If you are reading this review, do yourself the biggest favor and just book it. Do not even think twice or look any further. Its magical and I have had the most special birthday weekend with 8 friends in the mountains. Perfect fro a group gettaway. I am already planning my next trip to the house and wouldn't stay any where else.
My sisters and I loved our time at this fabulous cabin. It is beautifully appointed with lovely linens. All the appliances and heating/AC worked simply and perfectly. The views are terrific and the house is amazingly quiet. Cooking is a delight. My contact for booking and questions with Irma (owner's mom) was extremely friendly and easy. Top recommendations from the four of us.
The sunset view is amazing.
When I go to Idyllwild, I look for vacation properties with one of the two most sought-after views: 1) the sunset, or 2) the rock. Of all the cabins I've rented over the years, the cabin we stayed in this week had, hands down, the BEST sunset view I've ever seen from Idyllwild. It was so magical I stopped what I was doing every single evening, just to take it in. If you're a sunset person like I am, please stay here. The cabin is near the top of a hill. Views are unobstructed.
The home itself is beautiful.
Sometimes, when you rent vacation properties, it feels like you're staying in someone else's garage sale leftovers. Nothing matches. Everything's cheap. Not the case here. Irma and her family have done a marvelous job at making this a beautiful, warm, inviting and cozy second home for themselves. The rooms are thoughtfully decorated, the furniture is comfortable, and most importantly for me, since I'm an avid home cook, the kitchen is fully stocked. Example: there are THREE coffee makers in the house.
The owners are wonderful.
Part of what makes a comfortable stay is the peace of mind in knowing there are friendly, helpful owners on the other end. Irma is a pleasure to deal with, and only a phone call or email away. Bonus: the neighbors are wonderful people, too. I know this because our two dogs inadvertently got out of the house (they pulled on the lever door handles to open them and ran out the backyard) and were missing for 25 hours. With the help of Katie (neighbor), the folks over at ARF Animal Rescue Friends of Idyllwild, and Dave, a good Samaritan and Idyllwild resident, we were able to get the dogs back. In summary, the community of Idyllwild is full of good, caring people. For anyone interested in reading the full story, you can find it on ARF's facebook page. Posted by Kim Burnell on September 26th.
