About Ginny

When we came to this island for a vacation in 1970 and immediately feel in love with the beauty of both the island and the people. Over a 15 year period, we built this house ourselves, with the help of some local Cat Islanders. We were lucky enough to be able to collect the beautiful stone indigenous to the island and use it as the structure of our home. We've tried to think of every little detail and have proudly maintained our home in excellent condition. We are happy to share it with others who also appreciate the beauty of the island and its people. Ginny and Richie Henn

Finding Shangri-la

I have hesitated writing a review because i don't want this place over run with people. The house was better than expected, it has everything one needs. It is set back from the beach just far enough for privacy but it is an easy walk to the beach. The deck is very large and only has a few steps to the sand. The owners are great and the caretaker Trevor will come if you need something but will never bother you. The people of Cat Island are the most engaging and kind people i have met since growing up on a farm in Iowa. They will help you find what you need, and in the 2 weeks we were on Cat no one asked us to buy anything or heckled us like other islands. I have been to 26 islands in the Carribean and the beach rates at the top. You can be on the beach all day and never see another person. Places like Shangri-la are rare in these times. This was the most relaxed and at ease i have been for years. If you come to Cat you need to understand it does not have the big night life casinos and 4 star hotels, it will rejvenate your soul if you just slow down and take it all in. Also it does have the basic supplies, but it is a good idea to bring some meat and a few supplies yourself. When you go exploring you will want to get back to Shangri-La because it is the best spot. Five of us stayed in the house the first week with no problem. If you come looking for treasure you will find it in the people of Cat Island!

Our Favorite Beach Vacation

We have visited beaches from Australia to the Seychelles and many points in between, but Shangri-La on Cat Island remains our absolute favorite beach vacation in the world. Once again, we had this beautiful and pristine beach to ourselves for our entire two week stay. We have stayed at Shangri-La at least sixteen times over the past sixteen years, and we've been the only two people on the beach on all but two of our visits. To say we love this place is an understatement. The house is always very clean, in perfect condition and is extremely comfortable. The people on Cat Island are the most friendly, helpful and happy people we have ever met. This is a true escape from the world, and when you must leave the island, you will be very relaxed and rejuvenated. (Although we're also very sad because we don't want to leave!) Ginny and Richie are such wonderful people to deal with, and we cannot recommend this very special place highly enough.

The Perfect Getaway Beach House!

We love this beach house and keep returning -- our 16th time just this past June. The white sandy beach is at least 1/3 mile long and we spent most of the time in the water. We were the only ones on the beach the whole week long.

The house is immaculate and the whole property is well-taken care of.
You will find everything you need to use in the kitchen.

We bought conch and grouper from a local fisherman. The people are so friendly and helpful! If you want casinos, fancy restaurants, loud music, Facebook, and other forms of virtual happiness, you need to go to a different island. Otherwise, this rental is truly paradise!

Just this side of paradise!

My husband, two adult sons and I spent the second week of Feb. at ShangriLa. From the time I first contacted Ginny and Rich about the possibility of renting, they have been wonderful to deal with. Ginny told me alot about the Island so I had a good idea of what to expect. We flew into Nassau on Friday and then took Sky Bahamas to Cat on Saturday. Trevor picked us up at the airport and drove us to the house. Quite honestly I wasn't sure what to expect because so many houses on the island are in really bad shape. But after the trip back the long lane we were so impressed with how lovely the house really is. We've stayed in several tropical vacation spots, but I've got to say that the first view from the patio is absolutely breathtaking! Although the pictures on this website are beautiful, they don't really do the property justice. The beach is pristine and pretty much private. My husband spent most of his week under the cabana reading, and I spent most of my week in a lounge chair by the water. The sons had never been to the Caribbean and were honestly speechless at it's beauty. Eric, Trevor's son, brought them snorkeling equipment and they used the neighbor's kayaks every day.The house is lovely and homey. There are no ceilings in the rooms, so be warned if you're traveling with a snorer(like our son). Luckily I took ear plugs. You'll need things like laundry soap, dish soap, coffee and filters, paper towels and toilet paper. It's really high on the island so you might want to bring with you.Several people told us they checked a cooler w/frozen food, which was a good idea. We did a few days of sightseeing but mostly just enjoyed our own beach. We bought steaks at King's Meats and grilled out one night. We ate at Yardy's several times.Rev. Johnson stopped 1st day selling fruit and veggies off his truck. Good but expensive. We got to watch the Super Bowl at the house on their satellite TV - way to go, Packers!! - but I think that was just about the only time the TV was on all week. Loved the CD collection, tho. Weather was mid 80's and sunny all week, which we were told was unusual for Feb. Sand fleas were viscious, but I heard they were bad all over the island, so it wasn't just at our place. Please be aware - Cat Island is very, very rustic and undeveloped, which appealed to us. We hope to be able to return very soon. Thanks so much to Ginny, Rich, Trevor, Eric and everyone else who contributed to making our vacation wonderful.

Absolutely Paradise!

Words cannot even begin to explain how beautiful the Shangri- La is, the pictures do not do it justice. It is the perfect location and setting for staying on Cat Island. The property was clean, quiet and VERY safe, not one night did we feel we had to lock any doors. There aren’t any better hosts than Ginny and Richie. They have a genuine love for the island and truly want you to have the stay of a lifetime. They provided us with helpful tips from food, to flights and local establishments to visit. As a side note, I would suggest you follow their advice.

The sunsets and stars at night are unlike any other place on earth. Both my 16 year old son and 19 year old daughter couldn’t believe how beautiful the night sky was. The water was perfect. It was warm, calm and amazingly clean and the sand was soft on your feet. It has been 20 years since I have been to a place where you could snorkel right from the beach and see numerous types of coral, sea fans, sea urchins, many brightly colored fish, sand dollars and an amazing amount and variety of shell. It was as if we were the first people to ever step foot there.

A visit to Cat Island shouldn’t be missed. The locals are friendly and inviting. We drove the entire island and it is beautiful from the top to the bottom. We visited every landmark, such as Mount Alvernia and the Hermitage, the Deveaux Mansion, the blue hole. We also visited every settlement from the north to the south beginning with Orange Creek, all the way to Devil’s Point. Don’t miss the Atlantic side of the island, the water and people are great there too.

I could go on and on but I will close with a quote from each of us describing our individual memory of the Shangri-La on Cat Island.

Norris, age 45: “Magnificent!”
Katie, age 43: “There is no better place to get away from it all and I mean away from it all!”
Ellia, age 19: “I could live here.”
Sam, age 16: “There really is such a place as paradise.”
