Here is the base of operation for your Big Island adventure. Not your ordinary vacation rental, this is our Oceanfront home completely redecorated October, 2008. Four bedrooms, five bathrooms, two story, over 3700 square feet, and right on the blue Pacific. Super comfortable home with big view lanai. Beautiful Pool and Jacuzzi overlooking the ocean!!! Full gourmet kitchen with all stainless, top-of-the-line appliances. Open beam with big living room, dining area, huge porch by the water. Watch the whales. Fully fenced and gated, super spot for nature walks. All the comforts of home and More!!! Computer with high speed internet, printer, copier, fax, scanner, TV with Dish network, DVD, VCR...bikes, stainless barbecue, only 15 miles from Hilo town. Note: Mika Kai is in a residential neighborhood and to be good neighbors we do not rent the house for large parties. We do not allow more than a total of 12 people on the property at any one time - subject to loss of deposit.

Great House - Great Location!

We stayed here for a week and it was not long enough. The house had everything that one could possibly want. It was a great location for getting to snorkeling, the volcano and various other sights. We have already told friends and family about this wonderful place. We certainly will be back.

Nice Home - Needs A/C!

Overall, this home has a lot of nice features - especially the pool and huge deck, plus the updated kitchen. Also, there are some great bonuses, like bikes and pool floats, etc.

Unfortunately, those are overshaddowed but the downsides, including:

1. A lack of any air conditioning what-so-ever. This is a huge problem in this house, because when were there in early June, there was little sea breeze. As a result, in the afternoon, tempuratures in the house are often 89+ degrees - as measured by a thermometer in the living room. That, combined with the humidity makes for VERY uncomfortable evenings. The house stayed hot past midnight most nights. Even A/C in a bedroom or two would help provide shelter from the constant heat and humidity. We only ventured upstairs once, but it was even hotter up there. The house also inexplicably didn't have any fans other than a number of ceiling fans (the one in the master bedroom had only one speed - slow) - we had to break down and buy a floor standing fan that we ended up leaving there.

2. The hottub is a nice feature, but much smaller than it looks - it's just very shallow and a bit dated.

Despite these drawbacks, the home is a rather good deal compared to hotels. Good luck!

Mahalo for a truly memorable holiday for our 40th anniversary. The Big Island is an amazing place with so much to see and do. And Mika Kai is the perfect place to call home. It was even better than the pictures. We loved being in the hot tub and watching the waves, weather and the whales that came by four times during our stay. There was everything we needed in the house and more. Everything was perfect and it was a holiday we will remember forever. We hope we can return. Mahalo again.
