Here is the base of operation for your Big Island adventure. Mika Kai is a beautiful oceanfront home in a tropical Hawaiian setting. It sits on lava bluff about 15 feet above the crashing waves. The oceanfront pool, jacuzzi and huge lanai give you a private resort all your own. This beautifully decorated home is not your ordinary vacation rental. Fully fenced and gated, it has 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 2 stories, over 3000 square feet, and right on the blue Pacific. This is a super comfortable home for your family group. The layout of the house is: 4 spacious Bedrooms – all 4 ensuite, each with its own private bathroom. The bedrooms are situated as such: downstairs has a master suite with a King Bed and a Japanese soak tub; a second bedroom downstairs has 2 Twin Beds (which can be converted to a King bed.) Upstairs has 2 more bedrooms both with Queen Beds. A second living room is located upstairs. This area is open to downstairs, very dramatic. On the main level, under the soaring ceilings, you will find an expansive living room with lots of comfortable seating, a large fully stocked and equipped modern kitchen, a dining room with seating for 8 –10, a 5th bathroom with shower. One of the living rooms sofas folds out to a queen size sleeper bed. A washing machine and clothes dryer including laundry soap is included. There is a second refrigerator for extra food and beverages.
At Mika Kai you will find guidebooks, Hawaii reef fish identification books, Big Island picture books, up-to-date pamphlets, and insider tips on secrets only known to the locals. Yet you may find that you wish to just sit on the lanai at Mika Kai and never leave. That’s okay too. For your enjoyment, we provide snorkels, fins, reef walking shoes, beach towels, and various water flotation items. Pack your swimsuits and come on over!
You will love the surrounding nature and the natural beauty of the area. Volcano National Park is approximately 45 minutes away. Great snorkeling is about 20 minutes. Waterfalls, nature hikes, champagne pond, steam vent caves, black sand beaches, surfing & boogie boarding, botanical gardens and scenic drives through rainforests are all nearby. Hilo is the second largest city in the Hawaiian Islands. This is old Hawaii at its natural best. The whale watching from November through March from Mika Kai's huge lanai is some of the best you'll find in all the Islands.
Note: Mika Kai is in a residential neighborhood and to be good neighbors we do not rent the house for large parties or events. We do not allow more than a total of 10 people on the property at any one time.
Check Our Calendar – Mika Kai is a very popular vacation rental. So that you will not be disappointed, please check our availability calendar. It is updated daily. You are wise to book ahead, because we are already getting many inquiries for 2016 from new and returning guests.

Leaving now after 4 nights of total fun - amazing landscapes and places to go - great accommodations here at Mika Kai...was comfortable and welcoming. Thank you, Jamie.
We stayed for 10 wonderful days and enjoyed the whales everyday and the turtles the pods of dolphins that went by and gave us a show almost everyday. Watching the guys in the water spear fishing and giving us fresh fish was awesome. We had heard that is always rains on the Hilo side well that wasn't the case we only had rain one night . The valcaon at night is a sight to see. Our only complaint is we had to leave. Hope to be back soon. Thanks for sharing your home with us.
Our party of 7 stayed at Mika Kai this past January. We had an absolutely wonderful time! The house was large enough that we could all have our own space yet large enough for when we were all together. Every morning consisted of a beautiful sunrise, coffee and whale watching! We were told that the Hilo side was the rainy side but we didn't have rain once. The weather was beautiful. Near the end of our holiday on The Big Island, we didn't want to leave the house and just spent the day on the back deck watching whales and dolphins, enjoying the hot tub, inground pool and the sun. We BBQ'd pretty much every night and the kitchen was well stocked and organized. Our trip was amazing and the house just added to it. If we ever head back to The Big Island this house is where we will be staying. Jamie was wonderful and quick to answer any questions we had. Definitely recommend this home!
Mika Kai is a gem! Our group of 8 thoroughly enjoyed our week there and we were very sad to leave. Not many people think of the Hilo side as a Hawaiian vacation destination; they really are missing out! Mika Kai is the place to "get away from it all". We filled our week there with plenty of laughs and good times, and a wedding too! Yup... If you're looking for an intimate wedding destination for your small group, Mika Kai won't disappoint. The property, view, amenities, and Mana that this home has is by far some of the best we have experienced. And while you won't want to leave Mika Kai, take comfort in the fact that any trip down Makuu Road will always result in giggles and a "Weee" or two. Especially if you're in the back seat of a minivan! Top that off with an owner who is a pleasure to work with made this vacation a stand out. Thanks, Jamie!
We booked 4 nights, but due to flight issue we missed 2 nights. We went to the house with very bad mood. But after that everything gets better. We were excited about the ocean view of the house and let the flight issue go away.
We had a group of 6 people. Every bed room has its own bath room. This is excellent for privacy.
The kitchen is well equipped, we had everything we need. We even found many sauces...
The pool and jacuzzi is just facing the ocean. The kids love playing in them. In the night we stay in the jacuzzi, watching the star sky and listening to the waves of the sea. Everything just can't be better...
The most important thing is the owner is very kind. When he had to cancel our extended stay to 5 oclock, he refunded us. Thanks Jamie.
We are planning our next stay here...
Our family found Mika Kai to be the perfect location for our small reunion. Everything said in previous reviews about the beauty of the seascape and the comfort of the home are all true. I'll add some practical notes that may be helpful.
While the property is not listed as wheelchair accessible, it is very friendly for those with limited mobility. You can pull your car right up to the front porch. Two low steps to the front door and the access to the hot tub were the most challenging for my elderly aunt with back and hip issues but she overcame both with assistance and enjoyed all the amenities. Two bedrooms and bathrooms are located on the first floor so she was able to avoid the stairs to the upper floor altogether.
The hot tub became the center of our enjoyment; large enough for 4-5 at a time, the temperature was consistent, the jets were powerful but not scary and the in-tub colored lights were therapeutic (and fun). A nighttime soak was the most wonderful topper to our busy days. The pool is lovely but was a little chilly for most of us. We didn't mind - we had our focus on the "bubble tub!"
The outdoor grill is large enough for a full surf and turf meal for 6-8 and easy to use if you've had any experience with propane grills.
There were plenty of plates and settings for indoor and outdoor use. If you're the cook, take a moment to peruse all the cabinets and drawers before you begin; you'll find so many useful tools and equipment. Everything from large boiling pots to ziplock bags and wooden skewers to a Japanese style rice cooker. The water cooler was much appreciated.
There's no air conditioning but you honestly don't need it. The breeze from the ocean and the overhead fans keep the temperature just right. Screens on all the windows allowed us to keep windows wide open while on property.
Check out the helpful binder of information right away. suggestions for local attractions, restaurants and sight seeing drives are plentiful.. Instructions for trash and recycling are there, too.
The final drive to the house on Makuu Road is a little tough for those who are prone to motion sickness. They don't call it the "roller coaster road" for nothing! But if you take it slowly, the 4 miles goes by without much thought.
And finally, Jamie, the owner, was responsive and helpful and friendly. I would rent any of her properties without hesitation.
Mika Kai was, indeed, paradise. I can't wait to return.
This is my third time renting this house. This time I stayed here with a group of hula dancers to perform at the Merrie Monarch Festival ho'ike. The location is fabulous, very convenient to Hilo. And with all the bedrooms and bathrooms, we had plenty of space for all our dancers to get ready for our big show. When we had time to relax, the pool and hot tub were big hits! It is a perfect house for gatherings, relaxing and enjoying the Hilo side of the Big Island. Doesn't get any better than this!
