I've lived in Hawaii since 1976. I have always lived on the Diamond Head side of the island.
In 2007, I was invited to dinner at my friend Ken's home in Kailua.
I looked forward to a leisurely drive through the Koolau mountain range, towering some 3150 feet in some areas above the valley floor, to Kailua....in 'the country.' No matter how many times I make this drive, I am struck by the diversity of the island and the breathtaking view when you emerge from the tunnels in the mountains and see the view of the ocean and northeast side of the island. I drove through the little town of Kailua and turned down a long driveway framed by lush Hawaiian plantings. I immediately felt the privacy of the property.
My first impression as I walked into the large entry room was the relaxing feeling of this lovely, open Hawaiian home. As I was shown around the home and property I remember remarking to Ken the house had a calming and peaceful presence.
The first night I spent in the home, with the ceiling fans slowly turning and the windows open, the sound of the ocean lulled me to sleep. I awoke to the tropical birds singing and was struck by the quietness of this side of the island and the neighborhood.
Julie purchased this house in 2011
Three years later, in April of 2011, I had the opportunity to buy the home. I love that the home has so many private areas, where people can feel alone, but be together on one property...out by the pool or in the spa, sitting in the garden area, relaxing in a bedroom with the windows open and the fan slowly turning or with the air conditioning cooling the room, relaxing in the large entry room while reading on the day bed, cooking in the large kitchen, or relaxing in the beautiful living room on the Hawaiian Punee (day bed) enjoying the beautiful Hawaiian gardens through the large windows. It is the perfect Hawaiian open air style home for multi generational families who are meeting to enjoy a vacation in 'paradise.' Imagine all this plus a beautiful white sandy beach with azure colored water only a 3-5 minute walk away! I enjoy sharing my home with my guests who are visiting the beautiful Hawaiian Islands!
It is appropriate to call this a Kailua Beach house because it is closer to the popular but uncrowded, gorgeous beach than most people are able to park. It comes with boogie boards, kayaks, pool toys and bicycles. You don;t even need to pack beach towels which helps eliminate more than one suitcase per person, It is well furnished and maintained and very roomy. We were a party of 9, including two 2-years and a baby. We brought toddler blow-up beds so the twos could sleep in the room with their parents. The accommodating owner supplied a crib for the baby. With older children, you'd use the daybed and trundle In the games room and give them their own space. Great kitchen too. This is the best of several we have rented to bring together a family from three different states!
It was immaculate. Beautifully decorated. Had every kitchen convience we wanted.
Excellent location, great pool and hot tub. We would absolutely recommend it. Thanks, Julie.
We needed a location that would accommodate 3 couples and a single, that was close to the beach with full amenities, and this house fit the bill perfectly. Julie is a great hostess and has organized the house very well. The kitchen had all the things we needed and more (a salad spinner, really!?). Having beach towels, boogie boards and snorkeling gear available just made our beach experiences that much better. The grounds are beautiful, especially at night with all the garden lighting, and it's so private, yet very close to everything you need. The beach access is so close and convenient, and you're also within walking distance to town.
We made use of the pool, hot tub and BBQ multiple times, and although the pool table surface in the games room is not exactly level anymore (humidity will do that), we had fun with it anyway! Also enjoyed the puzzles and movie selections.
The house is extremely clean, bright, and very open. And the beds are so comfortable (haven't slept that well for a long time) with a good selection of pillow types to choose from. It was great having two bathrooms for our large group as well.
Thanks again, Julie, for meeting us so late at the house on our arrival night. You made the accommodation part of our vacation/family reunion go so well, and we would gladly recommend your home to all!
Just a word on Kailua: lots of grocery stores to choose from (some stay open all night if you happen to arrive late), and if you can afford it, you must have at least one dinner at the Baci Bistro - the food was amazing and the service exceptional. This was our second visit to Kailua, and each time we find more to do - visiting book stores, ice cream at Baskin and Robins, hiking trails to waterfalls, etc. A real nice change from the frenetic pace of Waikiki.
We just came back from staying at this house and it was wonderful. Julie was so easy to book with and answered any questions we had. We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. It was equipped with everything you could need and so close to the beach. We were a group of 7 adults and found we had more than enough space.
Thanks again Julie!
The house was more beautiful than the pictures showed and all the amenities were awesome. We would love to come back and visit and possibly bring our kids. LOL Thanks Julie!
This house was fabulous! It's fully stocked with every beach/pool item that you would need. The pool and hot tub are amazing and the closeness to the beach is the best. We watched the sunrise every morning and loved swimming in that warm water then came back and swam in the pool. The a/c was also welcome, it was mighty hot while we were there!
The only downside is if you are a loud family (we had 5 teens) it's not ideal. The kids really loved the pool and were in it a lot. On the last day (a Sunday, 7am) while we were packing we got a call that the kids were too loud and that the pool hours start at 8am, the neighbors called the owner. I felt terrible! So sorry Julie! Those rascal kids had to get in one last swim. So just be aware that it's not really a "do whatever you want" vacation home, you have to be mindful of your noise level. You're surrounded by homes with working people in them and I'm sure they're tired of the constant sound of vacation people splashing about!
Thank you Julie for letting us stay in your wonderful home! And sorry to your neighbors!
