About Caroline Whitney

We are a family with deep New England roots. 5 generations have enjoyed gathering in Mattapoisett. There are many stories to tell of the days of fishing with uncles, sailing, weekly races in Beetle Cats and Herreshoff Twelves, tennis competitions and trips to the islands and just hanging out with cousins and friends.

Why Caroline Whitney chose Mattapoisett

This property is perfect with its own beach, enough open space for lawn games and play. It is a place to be enjoyed by all ages. Sitting on the porch of the Big House or the deck of The Little House, with views to the harbour and bay, encourage relaxing encounters. For those rainy days inside, there are puzzles and games, but bring your own favorites.

What makes this house unique

We have enjoyed the house for its diversity of space within the houses that allows for various activities. Games in the garden and quiet time in the evenings at sunset. The harbor is always busy with boats coming and going. Children have happy times here.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This was our second year and again we had a wonderful time. It is an ideal location for a family, where you want to be near the Cape without Cape traffic. The house is terrific for a large family who want to spend time with each other, with a large lawn and private beach. The house is not modernized in decor or amenities, but for a summer stay, it is works. There are plenty of tableware, linens, fans, and porch furniture. It is obvious that the owners are making improvements whenever it is possible.

Perfect house for a multi-generational Vacation

  • 4 of 5
The house is both elegant and easy going, with a very well-equipted kitchen for meal preparation. Love the large family dining room for home dinners and the delightful huge veranda overlooking the bay. Mattapoisett is a wonderfully historic maritime village/town. Renters who desire luxurious, modern appointments would be disappointed. The house is a time wharp as is the town, no night life, trendy shops, or hotels, but all essentials within a short drive.

Magical times in Mattapoisett

  • 5 of 5
I planned a big family reunion for the summer of 2014 and found Bow Mansion to be perfect for such an occasion. The house was spacious, well kept, and had lots of bedrooms. All the listed amenities were in good working order and we wanted for nothing during our stay. My brother took advantage of the well-stocked kitchens when he prepared eight roasted chickens and four strawberry rhubarb pies for the Sunday night dinner. We also got a lot of use out of the washers/dryers during the last two days of our stay since we opted to wash all the sheets and towels ourselves.

The living and dining rooms were fine (especially for the more reserved in our group) but the grounds and private beach were my favorite features of the property. The weather was warm and sunny with cool nights so we spent most of our time on the front porch singing songs and telling stories. Occasionally, someone would wonder off to stroll the gardens, paddle around the harbor, or stop by the creamy for a lobster roll and some ice cream. Who could ask for a better week? Our excursions took us to various museums, breweries and ball parks. In other words, we enjoyed all the benefits of the Cape without actually being stranded out there in the traffic. This was also a critical factor for those in my family who traveled from afar and needed quick access to the train stations and airports in Providence and Boston.

In planning this reunion, I had lots of questions but the owner was very helpful and was easily reached by email or cell phone. I would highly recommend this house and the Mattapoisett area. I can't wait until our next visit!

Excellent location and adequate room

  • 3 of 5
We stayed here with a very large group and the house can definitely accomodate many families together. The location is wonderful, close to town and also easy access to the water. Perfect for kids. My only complaint with the property is the condition of the house. The house is very dusty, some rooms smell strongly of mold and the furnishings are in need of repair. New mattresses and fresh bedding would be a bonus. We were there when the weather was cool and raining. There were no working fireplaces and no heat so this made for a very cold week. The property could be a fantastic rental but it definitely needs some attention.

Owner's Response: Four generations of the same family have enjoyed spending time here. The present owners have been slowly upgrading this summer home year by year, taking on a project to maintain the house and to make improvements for the family and for our guests. We do care for the comfort of everyone, and we do welcome constructive, non-derogatory comments. On the other hand, we have no control of the weather. The house is closed all winter. A thorough spring cleaning is always executed. Nevertheless, since the property is situated right on the water, it is much more susceptible to damp weather. Thus it does mean that in late May and early June, if there has been rainy, foggy weather, the Big House can feel a bit damp and musty. The Little House, because it is smaller does dry out quicker.

Outdoor wonderland, indoor problems

  • 2 of 5
Our stay in Mattapoisett for a family reunion was filled with ups and downs. The outdoor space was lovely. The front porch is expansive and conducive to long chats and watching the sunsets. We brought a few extra chairs because although the house sleeps 19 there was not a lot of lawn furniture. Beach access was great and it was fun to watch the many bunnies and hedgehogs munching on the clover. The yard was big enough for bocce tournaments and a volleyball set. The indoors was a bit of a disappointment. The first morning we discovered a squirrel in the house. My husband thought maybe he had come in through an open window. The next night, with all the windows secured, he paid another visit and ransacked the kitchen destroying food. We finally plugged a hole in the door with a rag and although he didn't make his way inside again he did hang around the garbage area and front porch. The owners should seek some assistance in ridding the house of this menace. The other area of concern was comfort. The downstairs common area was certainly big enough but there was almost no comfortable seating. Some of the furniture has rips. The beds were a mixed bag, some comfortable, some "prison beds". All in all we had a great family gathering that could have been more comfortable.

Owner's Response: Our house is shared not only with renters but with many family members. The furniture is typical of a summer house used by several generations since before 1950. Yes, some of it must be removed and other pieces need repair or renewal, which has to be done from year to year. There are also items damaged by tenants. The beds are a mixed bag as some like it hard and some like it soft in the family, but again, we are striving to compromise, each year. The squirrel is a new event for us this year. He or she seems to be very tame, however it cannot be one of our house guests, thus measures are being taken to remove this uninvited intruder.

august family reunion

  • 4 of 5
We rented this property for a family reunion, 25 of us from age 6 to age 84. Theres ample space for getting lost and being alone and rooms large enough for a gathering. The furniture is old and charming but some should be thrown out. Several pieces were unusable. The stairs my be tough on the old or infirm and no 1st fl bedroom. The lg dinning room table was great for indoor dinners so that we could all gather around for serving. There wasn't enough outdoor tables and chairs for having dinner. there is a fabulous porch with a couple of small tables and chairs but a large pick nick table would have been great on the absolutely gorgeous lawn leading down to the private beach. Several of the beds were so uncomfortable that they couldn't be used and the third floor was hot and smelled like mold. the bathroom up there started leaking and couldn't be used. luckily there were other bathrooms and bedrooms to use. Even with all these issues the house was an amazing place to stay. It was lg enough for all of the family members and the surrounding grounds are well kept and beautiful. You couldn't ask for a better spot for a reunion. The front lawn is lg enough for several games to be going on at the same time and the kids ages 6 to 26 all enjoyed many sports together. Having a private beach for swimming and launching our kayaks made being outside easy. We only left to swim at the local beach and the raging river. We spent the whole week having the best time. We could never have afforded such a great location if the house wasn't a little old and worn in by many years of love and family gatherings. there are several good local eateries. This is a historic New England home that has not been renovated. The little house is more up to date and modern. We rented both houses. The houses are connected so if you rent only one you are very close to your neighbor. The gorgeous porch is on the big house and the large balcony is on the little house off the master bedroom, the only bed for two. all the other beds in the small house are singles. Both houses have incredible views. If you are a neat freak you might be disappointed by the big house but the little house would serve you fine. I would rent these houses again despite the negatives. The owner is helpful and available by cell phone. Washing the sheets and towels was nearly impossible. We all left on different days so we could get them clean before we left. Otherwise good luck w that. weather was perfect and good locals.

Little House June 2009

  • 4 of 5
My wife and two small children stayed at the "Little House" in June 2009. It was one of our most memorable vacations. The location, furnishings, decorating and grounds all scream New England. The location could not be better. Mattapoisett is a beautiful and quaint seaside New England village a short distance from the Cape, but without the traffic. This house is within walking distance to the village center, Oxford Creamery and the waterfront and is close by Ned's Point lighthouse. The home has its own private beach and the views of the harbor are picture perfect. The clanging of rigging on sailboat masts put us to sleep every night!

The private beach would have been good enough, but the grounds are also stunning without being too formal. It included a huge lawn surrounded by hedges (perfect for games), two koi ponds that my kids absolutely fell in love with and a pet cemetery that contained all the dogs who have lived and died at the house over the last century. It was truly a magical place for my children to explore both inside and out and was one of the most relaxing stays we have had in some time. A worthy setting for a novel due to the immense amount of character that engulfs this place.

On the downside, there was a strong remanence of the previously mentioned dogs in the form of a strong urine smell in some of the rooms. It was not bad enough to make the stay unpleasant, but it was definitely noticeable. If something like this would bother you, you should ask specifically if this problem has been corrected.
If you're like me, you'll just chalk this up as part of the experience of living in a real New England storybook dream and never want to leave.

The owner was very accommodating and pleasant, and check in / check out was a breeze. The neighbors were also very nice and welcoming. We enjoyed our talks with them.

The neighborhood is a joy to walkthough, full of beautiful homes and gardens.

Hopefully, I can find enough success in my life to call a place like this home in the summer.

Owner's Response: We were concerned with the mention of urine smells in the Little House, and checked out every possible reason for it in order to remedy this problem. Since then we have not had others mentioning the same.

Mattapoisett is a coastal town near New Bedford, Marion amd Wareham offering dining and shopping opportunities . Buzzards Bay is a haven for sailors, fishermen and other sports. Accessibility to Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and Rhode Island is easy by car and ferry. This area provided good food for the American Indians, and European ships certainly used the harbor. Around 1740, shipbuilding and whaling industries began and flourished. The stone piers in the harbor, are indicative of the that period. Herman Melville's novel, 'Moby Dick,' is based on the whaling around New Bedford. Today, the nearby towns of Fairhaven and New Bedford have some of the largest fishing fleets along the Eastern seaboard. More recently, Mattapoisett became summer homes for families from the New York, Philadelphia and Boston areas. Many of those families continue to summer here, some having become year-around inhabitants. Boston is only 1 1/2 hours away by car or you can take a bus from New Bedford to Boston.

Other Activities: Whaling Museum, Zoo and Botanical Gardens, New Bedford, Edaville Railroad Park, Carver MA. Sightseeing around Buzzard's Bay, the Cape, and Rhode Island by car or take a ferry to Marthas's Vineyard and Nantucket.

Golf: There are public golf courses in Mattapoisett and the surrounding towns - best found in the local telephone directory or online to suit what you are looking for. Public tennis courts in town or at a facility in Marion
