ROMANTIC MENDOCINO COAST GETAWAY

Gualala House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Katrina's Blog, October 26 (see blog link at the bottom of the page):

Fall - The warm nights are behind us, dinners on the deck will have to wait until next summer – maybe spring. The days are still pleasant, but towards the end of the day, it’s time to start the fire place and get cozy in the house. The chill adds a certain serenity to Enchanted Meadows. I was walking around the garden taking in the changes in colors, smells and sounds of the forest. The yellows, oranges and browns were replacing the greens and bright colors of summer. It’s nature’s signal to us to slow down and preserve energy.

Our house in Enchanted Meadows (that is the actual name of the area, you couldn’t make it up!) in Anchor Bay, California is the perfect place for a couple or a small group of family or friends to get away for a few days. It sits on top a hill along famous Highway 1 on the coast.

Because Enchanted Meadows is located in the so called banana belt, the weather is warm and sunny even if much of the coast is covered in fog. The main house has a living room and dining room with hardwood floors, a fully equipped kitchen, one bedroom, a large newly remodeled bathroom with floor heating and a huge deck around the house. Two additional buildings serve as two more bedrooms, one with a bathroom.

The house sits in a Redwood forest with a partial blue water ocean view. You can hear the waves and sea lions from the house. The setting is very private, calm and romantic. The deck and garden are perfect for hottubbing, relaxing, sunbathing, enjoying meals or watching the local wildlife. You will most likely meet the local bevy of quail, watch the hummingbirds dart around the garden, hear the ravens in the trees, see the chipmunks and squirrels and maybe get a glimpse of a deer.

One of the most wonderful features of the house is the light. In the morning the whole house is flooded with warm morning light. Watching the full moon from the hot tub on the deck or through the windows inside the house travel across the night sky is spectacular. And without the moon, the sky is exploding with stars and planets, an amazing experience from the comfort of the hot tub. For city dwellers the lack of light pollution is awe-inspiring.

In the winter, the wood burning stove in the living room will keep you warm and cozy.

Though you feel like you are away from it all, you are very close to civilization. Anchor Bay is just 5 minutes down the hill and offers a supermarket and two restaurants. Gualala is about 10 minutes to the South and offers a wide variety of restaurants, two supermarkets, a post office, gas stations, gift shops and live music. Gualala is about 10 miles north of Sea Ranch, Sonoma County.

The spectacular Mendocino coast and its beautiful beaches are a great place to explore, hike, fish, dive and surf.

Our house is a short drive to the Point Arena Cove and the Point Arena Lighthouse which offers some of the best whale watching on the entire West coast.

Our house in Enchanted Meadows is our personal vacation home, but we enjoy making it available for you to rent. John and I spend as much time up there as we can because we love the area. The Mendocino Coast is an easy place to fall in love with; you should try it!

The Owner purchased this house in 2007

If you have to ask, you need to come visit the area! It is paradise. This stretch is one of the most amazing parts of the California coast. It is rugged and offers any outdoor loving person unlimited possibilities.

Our property is at the end of the road, which means that you are looking out on the ocean and trees. The hill is South facing and offers a unique sunny, windless and warm climate, the locals call it the Banana Belt.

Cozy stay in Gualala

We were looking for a peaceful and cozy getaway and the cabin more than delivered! As many other reviewers note, the house is very comfortable, has lots of great amenities (hot tub on the deck, DVD player and TV, well-appointed kitchen, etc.) and is impeccably clean and organized. The owner has obviously taken a lot of care to make the place comfortable and easy to use for guests. The configuration of the cabin plus outbuildings makes it great for a group of friends to hang out together, with some privacy but also good gathering spaces.

One thing renters should keep in mind is that you are completely off the grid up here, there's no cell service for at least several carriers (we heard Verizon works, T-Mobile and AT&T did not for us), no landline and no Internet connection. It wasn't a problem for us but we did wonder how we would get help in case of an emergency.

I found this little gem on a last minute search for secluded get-aways in the redwoods for my 30th birthday. I wasn't looking forward to turning the big 3-0, and wanted to surround myself with solitude and beauty.

This cabin more than exceeded those qualifications. Katrina is so accommodating and sweet. Very easy to talk to and obliged my request for the rental only 4 days before the weekend. The drive up to the Gualala was scenic and unreal: cows grazing along 200ft drops to the Pacific Ocean, redwoods, prairies, and adorable sleepy towns adorned our trip up to the cabin.

Once we were there, we didn't want to leave, and in fact, we only stepped out to briefly explore Gualala. The rest of the time was spent at the cabin, watching the deer and her fawn greet us in the morning (twice!), picking fresh tomatoes and sugar snap peas from the garden, listening to the hummingbirds argue with each other, and spending the nights with a nice glass of scotch in the hot tub staring up at the Milky Way.

The accommodations were so cozy and updated. I can honestly say, that after many stays on VRBO, that Katrina's Oasis was the cleanest one we've stayed at! How wonderful it was to just to get the cabin and begin the process of relaxing! No cleaning up after previous tenants! Loved it!

We are in love with this place. I cannot imagine a more perfect romantic and secluded get-away. Thank you Katrina for letting us stay here for a short weekend, and for letting me forget about that birthday! :)

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 weeks in June and July and had a great time. The house was beautiful and clean, with a kitchen that had truly everything you need (even for baking a cake). It's set back from the curvy, small, super steep road and it's very quiet. Even though you can tell from the driveways that there's a surprising number of houses hidden in the forest, they really are hidden. There are only two neighboring houses in view of the house - one was empty the whole time we were there, the other one was occupied only for the first few days. So it's really very private.
It's very conveniently located, up the hill from Anchor Bay (tiny but complete with supermarket, coffee shop, and even a Thai restaurant) and only 4 miles from Gualala (still very small but complete with shops, supermarkets, pharmacy (make sure to check that one out, it's not your everyday pharmacy) restaurants, and 2 gas stations).
Even though we never ventured beyond Fort Ross to the South and Mendocino to the North, it turns out you can indeed spend 3 weeks on the Mendonoma coast without getting bored. We bought the local paper, looked at the event calendar, and did pretty much everything - be it craft bazaars and farmers' markets in Gualala and Anchor Bay, or the Fourth of July fireworks and parade in Point Arena. Mainly, though, we went to all the beaches. Tip: we had our best seal/sea lion watching by far at the bottom of the cliffs at Fort Ross State Park, of all places, there's a footpath down to where they're lounging on the rocks right by the shore. We saw whales off Manchester beach and were buzzed by the hummingbirds in the garden by the house. Even a deer showed up twice.
We didn't want to leave and are still secretly plotting ways to just move to Gualala/Anchor Bay for good.
Contact with Katrina was great, all our questions were answered promptly.

Wonderful Stay

The cabin and location was perfect, couldn't have asked for more. We stayed here as part of our honeymoon - very romantic, secluded, with great views and a hot tub! The cabin itself had a well stocked kitchen (perfect because we love to cook), was very clean and spacious. The pictures don't do it justice. There are lots of small towns (with restaurants, grocery stores, etc), hikes, and miles upon miles of beautiful coast just minutes from the cabin. I would recommend this spot to anyone.
