Pleasant Get-away on Vieques

I loved Nonna and Carl's vacation rental. It was clean and provided all the amenities we needed. Kitchen loaded with all the cooking equipment needed to prepare a good meal, clean bathroom--and even a great view from the shower!--and two bedrooms, allowing my husband and I some privacy from our two kids! The view from the veranda was amazing. The eye can stretch across the Atlantic side of the island viewing the mainland of PR in the distance--we enjoyed watching the main ferry come and go each afternoon. The pool was a hop, skip and jump away--I definitely recommend renting a place with a pool just to relax waterside minus the sand--and our kids especially enjoyed the pool. At night, we enjoyed being lulled by the coqui frogs, and in the mornings awoken by the distant call of roosters, which you see everywhere on the island--that and wild horses! Vieques is truly magical due to its blend of rustic charm and Caribbean lure, and Nonna's and Carl's apartment is in a good location because just at the top of the hill from their place one has 360 views of the island, including Sun and Mosquito Bays. Esperanza, a great spot for ex-pats and tourists--is literally a 5 minute drive. We recommend the bioluminescent tour at night. AMAZING! Also, our favorite beaches, Playa Caracas (Red Beach), and Sun Bay were a 5-8 minute drive. Red Beach was THE best, I think. We swam in calm surf with tropical fish. Really cool. Better shade at Sun Bay, though.
The only drawback I can think of to Nonna and Carl's is the mattress and pillows needed updating, but when we suggested this to Nonna, she replaced them immediately. They take their rental seriously and want guests to give them their feedback so they know what needs improvement or a little extra attention.
We DO plan to return to Vieques and would definitely rent this unit again. And that reminds me, we have two, sometimes LOUD, kids, yet Nonna and Carl did not seem phased by this. We TRY to keep our kids' voices low, but if you are a parent, you know that doesn't always happen. Nonna and Carl just seem to go with the flow and want their guests to feel comfortable.
