Moonridge Cottage 'Almost Heaven'...closer than you think! Just 90 min. from both DC and Baltimore; 60 minutes from Dulles airport in the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia!
'Moonridge' is one of two art studios of artist and host, Bobby Ericsson, and is available for vacation rental during non-use periods by the artist.
2 bedrooms (master with 4 poster queen bed; 2nd bedroom - 2 singles; sleeper sofa with thick comfy mattress in living room); lots of toys, playhouse, rocking horse, in 'kid's room'; huge screened porch with porch swing and settee loaded with comfy cushions - great spot for morning coffee, watching the local deer.
Area Attractions:: Explore Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, Appalachian Trail, Charles Town Races and Slots, Antietam Battlefield, tubing, canoeing and kayaking on the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, white-water rafting, juried Mountain Heritage Arts and Crafts Festival (Sept.), fine dining, shopping and antiquing in quaint historic towns of Shepherdstown and Charles Town, WV, Leesburg, VA and Frederick, MD; hiking and biking along river roads and C&0 canal ~ or ~ simply relax with a good book from the extensive on-site library and a glass of iced tea or gourmet coffee on the screened porch, enjoying the mountain air and cool breezes.
Additional Information: Handicapped Accessible: The path to the house from the driveway is not smooth. There is one step going into the cabin. Bathroom doorway and bathroom are narrow. Driveway is steep and can be treacherous during winter months.
This is a very rustic 'prop-your-feet-on-the-furniture' type spot; make yourself totally at home. If you're squeamish about stink bugs, spiders and other little critters, this is probably not the place for you. We're right smack in the middle of the woods on a mountain, and despite having a pest control contract, this is their territory also and they don't give up easily! The cabin was built in the 40s so it's not your aseptic hotel room. It's only about 800 square feet so more than 4 people (and preferably not more than 2 adults) is going to be very tight and I don't recommend it.
Kid Friendly: Toy chest and kid's movies on site; kid's love building forts in the surrounding woods, sleeping on the porch in summertime and wading and rock-hopping in the Shenandoah River. Zip line available locally. There's lots of wildlife visible from the screened-in porch.
Smoking Not Allowed: No smoking on the screened porch either.
Hi; Bobby here. We're Northern Virginia transplants to Wild and Wonderful West Virginia! About 15 years ago we purchased a weekend cabin near Harpers Ferry in the mountains (Shannondale) with a 50 mile view of the Shenandoah Valley below. We fell in love with this beautiful area and wonderful local people, and it didn't take long to switch from weekenders to permanent residents! I quickly discovered an abandoned 'shack' a short hike through the woods below our cabin - no doors or windows, holes in the roof, misc. critters living inside, including a few non-living. I purchased this adjoining property and embarked on a 3 month restoration project to turn it into my art studio. New roof, new heating, new plumbing, new windows, skylights - new everything! Shangri-la-de-da!! Thus, 'Moonridge' was created! All of our friends and family who stayed at Moonridge have absolutely LOVED IT, so we decided to share our delightful little hide-away with all of you! Come, relax, and enjoy! Let me pamper you a bit!
Bobby Ericsson purchased this cabin in 2000
We love the natural beauty of this area, the wildlife, the cultural heritage, the history, the quaint little towns, plus we're only an hour from Fairfax, Va., so even though we feel really remote, there is easy access to the big city. It's really the best of all worlds!
Moonridge Cottage was even more than I had hoped for. My boyfriend and I wanted to do something special to celebrate our Christmas, and thought an out-of-the-way (but convenient) cabin in the woods would be perfect. And it was. I was delighted with the special care that Bobby took to make the cabin cozy and festive. Upon our arrival, the wood stove was burning, the tree decorated, and wine waiting on the table. Fresh bread was served to complete the homey atmosphere. Bobby could not have been more accomodating with our early arrival and late departure. Our stay was wonderful, and will return in the spring to enjoy the next phase of mother nature.
Stayed at Bobby's cabin for a weekend getaway. The cabin has everything you could need, including excellent wireless internet service and a kitchen fully stocked with basic cooking needs. Bobby left some delicious homemade bread and a bottle of wine for us - much appreciated! The screened porch offered a perfect vantage to enjoy the quiet and the deer walking down the road.
Although the cabin is secluded, we found it convenient to Harpers Ferry and Charles Town. Highly recommended!
I spent 2 weeks at Moonridge, and loved it. Bobby was a great host, providing all the info I needed, and even left fresh bread and a bottle of wine. The house is comfortable and cozy, and is particularly great for artists. I didn't have to pack my easel, as Bobby had one out. Her lovely work decorates the home. The screened porch is the best part - it runs the length of the house, and gets wonderful light, with a view of the river peeping through the trees. Moonridge is an incredibly peaceful place. Just ask the deer that wandered through through the yard. The area is lovely, with mountains and winding roads and good hiking in Harpers Ferry and the small town charm of picturesque Shepherdstown nearby.
Exactly as portrayed. A quiet, serene, wooded setting. Very comfortable. An unusually warm welcome including music, bread, wine and chocolate. Although we did not cook, we noted the kitchen to be unusually well stocked for a rental. Bobby was great to deal with. We needed a pet friendly place and were happy we found this one. The driveway is steep - not for the physically challenged.
We couldn't have asked for a more welcoming place to spend a quiet New Year's. The cabin was so cosy that we didn't even mind getting snowed in. But it was beyond our expectations when our host had the snow removed for us so we didn't have to worry about digging out!
My husband, 2 daughters(ages 9 and 14), and I arrived at Moonridge on a cold dark night less than 24 hours after confirming our reservation. We were exhausted following a 3.5 hour drive, 2.5 hours exploring River Riders' Ariel Adventure Park, and grocery shopping. The woods and driveway were pitch dark as we cautiously made our way to the warm glow coming from the cabin windows. As promised, leaves were cleared from the steep driveway, lights were on, and the heat was turned up. Everyone's eyes lit up upon entering our mountainside retreat. The cabin is both whimsical and comfortable - decorated with an eclectic collection of artwork, rustic crafts, travel memorabilia, and welcoming elements reminiscent of (my) grandparent's mountain get-away. We all chipped in to prepare and enjoy a home-cooked meal. We slept well and awoke the following morning to find ourselves in a tree-house completely surrounded by trees, leaves, rocks, and an amazing 180 degree view off the screened deck. We enjoyed biking along the C & O Canal Towpath, a guided Zip-line Canopy Tour along the Potomac, and exploring Historic Harpers Ferry during the day. I pick-up a couple Civil War books at the National Park Bookstore and 3 interesting Bill Campbell pieces at Westwind Potters. Our daughters' LOVED the "Chicken Bones" and Peppermint Sticks from Cool Confectionaries. Each day, we were happy to return the cozy little mountainside cabin for dinner, family games, and quiet reading. We would like to return in the Spring to white-water raft, hike on the Appalachian Trail, and visit Shepardstown. Hopefully Moonridge will be available when we finalize our plans.
Moonridge offers all the comforts of home in a rustic-whimsical package. If you want to escape the noise of everyday life, rest, rejuvenate, and connect with your loved ones; Moonridge is the ideal setting to do so. We enjoyed our stay so much we are tossing around the idea of finding/building a log cabin get-away of our own :-)
