I am a custom furniture builder and a welder. I love dogs. I live on the property with my wife and daughter. I love hiking and animals especially dogs. I like being close to nature so living and working on 4 acres just out side Ashland is ideal. I can walk out my front door and take a quiet hike or go to town and see a play.
Margaret or Tom Saydah purchased this cottage in 1996
We chose Ashland because it's beautiful and rural but also offers a lot of culture. It is big in the arts and we are artists. We remodeled a little house on our property with the idea that people can go on vacation and stay in an 'arty environment'.
While staying at the ArtYCottage you can expierence fine art such as custom furniture, metal work and textiles that you can order or purchase, cook a great meal in a state of the art kitchen, soak in the tub, relax on the deck up in the trees or walk out the front door and take a quite relaxing hike or in winter you can ski. Hiking, boating and fishing are all close by. A short drive will take you to Ashland where you have the Ashland Shakespeare Festival, Cabaret Theatre, Oregon Stage wrorks for plays, many good restaurants, wineries galore, shopping, galleries and Lithia Park. Jacksonville just down the road has the Britt out door music festival all summer
My wife and I stayed for 5 nights and it was an amazingly satisfying experience. Located 15 min from Ashland up a winding road with nice vistas going to and from, it is set in a "bowl" that insulates it from sounds and views, providing incredible privacy. No barking dogs, no loud neighbors or traffic - just very peaceful and quiet. The air is also so clean that we slept better and longer than we normally do. As others have already noted, the cottage is outfitted with beautiful furniture and textile art crafted by the hosts and you can also purchase items if you like. It is like staying in an art gallery but having all the conveniences of a well appointed home. There are so many thoughtful touches and we really felt at home, so much that we'd purchase this cottage in a hurry if it ever came on the market (unlikely). Being without TV for 5 days was also refreshing although you have full WiFi connectivity (via satellite, somewhat slower than broadband via cable and also prone to weather outages as is any satellite-based communication or TV system). It was a bit chilly in the evenings and we even had snow on evening (in mid-April!). The hosts provided ample firewood and resupplied us without us asking - very thoughtful. The fireplace heats up the whole house to the point it becomes "toasty" so no issues with keeping it warm. Large kitchen area with all modern tools and very well equipped cabinets, utensil drawers and appliances. We recommend it highly to anybody visiting southern Oregon, and the location is very good for visiting the areas many wineries, Dagoba chocolate factory/shop, very nice restaurants and of course the theaters of Ashland, famous for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Finally, the cottage is located about 30 minutes from Medford/Rogue Valley Airport (code: MFR), with easy flights to Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, among others. We certainly hope to come back one day again!
Our stay was literally life changing. We stayed a week and never wanted to leave. The cottage is like a multifaceted jewel. It glitters and shines differently at different times of the day and night and is filled with to most exquisite handmade wooden furniture and textile art. Everywhere you look you see some beautifully made item that you are using. Whether it be the hand made copper kitchen counters and sink, the amazingly comfortable and astounding rocking chair, the colorful and functional felted wool bowls and coasters and the list goes on and on. All these items and more made by your hosts! The setting is a lovely wooded meadow and the view off the large deck is like being in a tree house as you get a bird's eye view of the birds and squirrels battling over the acorns from the surrounding oaks. As I said, wow!
We plan on going back very soon for another stay.
Very clean, cute, quaint and warm getaway. Loved the personalized touch, the note cards and most of all that giant bed upstairs! Very comfy and such beautiful hand-made quilts.
The cottage is the textbook definition of amazing, it showcases the talent of Thomas and Margarets craftman skills. I would 10/10 recommend it to anyone! Thank you for the blissful experience that your cottage provided!
This cozy cabin really felt like home. The cabin is on a beautiful property about ten minutes out of Ashland. It is surrounded by beautiful rolling hills dotted with oaks. Its filled with one of a kind furniture made down in the wood shop, that gives it a special home crafted feel you wont find anywhere else. Me and my friends had a wonderful weekend here and I would come back in a heartbeat!
I stayed here with a couple of friends for a weekend in April and will I can honestly say that if given the chance, I will never stay anywhere else. Everything about the Artycottage was beautiful, from the furniture to the landscape. The owners were incredibly helpful, and were honestly interested in making our stay the best it could be. The website was spot on in portraying the property's beauty. I would absolutely not hesitate to stay here again.
