Among America's Best Beach Boardwalks
Nestled between Fort Lauderdale and Miami is Hollywood, a classic Florida beachtown that's enchanted visitors since the 1920s. Hollywood Beach features a one-of-a-kind oceanfront promenade called the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk that stretches nearly two and a half miles along the Atlantic. Named one of America's Best Beach Boardwalks by Travel + Leisure magazine, this brick-paved thoroughfare is a haven for joggers, bicyclists, roller-bladers and all who'd prefer to take in the action from the comfort of one of the countless eateries and cafés along the way. The easy ocean access and village-like feel make this a can't miss destination with numerous highly-rated restaurants, small inns and hotels right on the broadwalk adding to its yesteryear charm. Family dining becomes stress-free, as Moms and Dads kick back to enjoy a seaside meal while their little ones entertain themselves in the sand just steps away. Two broadwalk parks attract kids of all ages to play paddleball at the historic Garfield Street courts or cool off in the whimsical dolphin play fountain. Locals rave about Josh's Organic Market which sets up shop on the south end of the Hollywood Broadwalk every weekend selling garden fresh produce and blending a variety of mouth-watering exotic, tropical smoothies from its seaside stand.
Having read a previous review we were a bit concerned, but were pleasantly surprised. The rental management were exceptionally efficient and extremely pleasant to deal with (especially Laura). The hotel ground floor is a bit dowdy with all the closed businesses, (used to be a mall on the ground floor), but the 24 hour security guarantees only registered guests can use the elevators and access the rooms. We had been advised by the management to go to a special registration area rather than the regular hotel front desk (just a few steps south between main lobby and parking garage) and the staff were pleased to assist us and welcome us to Hollywood Beach. Three elevators allowed easy access to all floors which had several pay-for-use washer/dryer sites for hotel guests.
The room was clean and well appointed with IKEA furniture. The mirrored wall, light coloured flooring and furnishings enhanced the feeling of spaciousness. Two large windows overlooking the beach gave us some superb sunrises from the king size bed which was very comfortable. Kitchen equipment was entirely adequate, although the small fridge is a bit of a challenge to accommodate all our drinks and food and required frequent defrosting due to the absence of the freezer door. The bathroom was OK, older style metal tub and some flaking paint from the tub and the access door in the ceiling, but plenty of hot water. Internet access was perfect, and the door security lock made us feel safe leaving valuables in the room.
The addition of beach chairs and umbrella by the management was a very nice and unexpected gesture. The beach, pool and boardwalk are all easily accessed directly from the hotel ground floor and were all kept clean, neat and tidy. The pool gets pretty busy (hotel probably has 600+ rooms) but plenty of space on the life-guarded beach... watch for rip currents with on-shore breezes and tide conditions. We will be returning next year!
Majority of the issues is NOT the VRBO/managers fault. The hotel/surrounding areas are a mess.. the "mall" it's attached to is mainly deserted/closed and in need of serious repairs. Nothing like disgusting bathrooms in the lobby, hotel staff not knowing what is going on, bums hanging out outside the place on the beach.. While waiting for the 1 functioning elevator, I enjoyed the signs that the floor we were on was being fumigated for "pests". hmmm....
We drove to the keys and rented a room in a resort just so we didn't have to come back and sleep here.
Ok, a few more surprises for the unsuspecting traveler: when arriving make sure the hotel understands that you're not checking into THEIR rooms, but thru a VRBO.. we had to wait a few hours outside for a room that was already available.. it took a manager to figure that out.
The unit is small and slightly dated, and it was about 60 degrees when we got there. Nice, except it was 65 outside, and there is no heat in the unit, so good luck if you want to warm up at night.
the ceiling in the bathroom looks as if it's going to fall on you, and the tub/sink was shall we say "older". so much for being remodeled lately...
The reviews of similar rooms stating that there is no noise cannot be true. One can hear tables being moved and alarms going off, in the rooms around you.
There is NO decent breakfast place near here... and the nearby restaurants know full well that and just don't care about the quality of the food / service they offer. It truly is a "beach town" catering to families with kids wanting the nearest $4 shirt or the soggy burger/fries and shake. We had to blot the grease off our hash browns to try to make it more edible.
The best was when checking out, a local in the elevator actually commented "are you relocating to another hotel?" That just summed it up for us. I wish i would have done that on day 1.
I could go on and on... but the bottom line is if you're looking for a nice fun vacation, with things to do and nice restaurants around the area please please avoid this place.
