Hi. I am Sylvia. I came to Roatan to retire three years ago from cold, old England. I have finally realised my dream of living on the beach, in the sunshine and never feeling cold. The sea is gorgeous and I love to swim and snorkel most days. I live in the lower apartment and rent the upper one to guests. I know you will love this house and it's unique position right on the beach.

Philip Mcgowan purchased this house in 2006

West Bay Beach is so beautiful, everyone is so relaxed and friendly. There are bars, restaurants and dive shops all along the beach and it is lovely to walk along and dip in and out of the sea or stand in the sea sipping a rum punch, or a beer or whatever you fancy.

GREAT STAY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND, WHAT A GREAT VACATION!!!!

My wife and I know Roatan well, and have been there many times. This was one of the best rental situations we have enjoyed. The house is in excellent condition, looks just like the pictures. Phillip had everything up and running. The beach is a stones throw away, and you can relax and nap on the many private porches (great hammocks).
We have stayed everywhere from very modest hotel rooms to some of the higher end resorts on the island. By far we enjoyed this stay the most. West Bay beach is the place to be. This house is a few houses back, but right there. What we liked is we could party if we wanted or lay back and relax.
The rooms are large, clean, linens were all clean, folded and in good shape. The A/C units all worked fine (remote controls).
Phillip bent over backwards to make sure we had a great experience. He was available 24/7 by cell phone, but we didn't need him once he had us set up.
The grounds are beautifully landscaped. There were security guards there round the clock that would help bring in groceries if you want them to. You couldn't ask for a better time.
All of the local people we met were friendly, eager to accommodate, and interesting to talk to.
Phillip hooked us up with a bunch of reasonably priced activities. The snorkeling, boating, zip line and awesome restaurants were all close by and reasonably priced. Thank you Philip for making our vacation memorable. Five Stars!

VERY, VERY DISAPPOINTED!

  • 1 of 5
This is our 5th time to visit Roatan and we had decided rent a house rather than staying at a resort. The photos of the house are generally accurate. It is the third house back from the beach so there is no water view from the house. All communications prior to our arrival indicated that Phillip would be at the house when we arrived however no one was at the house to meet us. Phillip eventually showed up and said that he had been at the airport to greet us. The problem was he had the wrong arrival time of the flight, please note that there are only about six flights per day from the states so knowing the flight schedule is not a difficult thing. Next we found the house to have been closed up for several weeks, it was hot and musty. There is an upper and lower 2 bedroom unit and we chose the upper unit. There are A/C units in each bedroom but none in the main room. One unit was horribly loud and he agreed to come back in 2 days and replace (that never happened). There were some well-worn towels in the house and sheets on the bed. The refrigerators (2 small ones, not the big one in the pics) were not on and no ice. He did go get us a couple bags of ice. The washer and dryer are in the utility house which remains locked so don't depend on them. There is no microwave. The internet access must be arranged in advance and even after we asked about having it, he did not make that happen for us. New towels and sheets were dropped off a couple of times during our stay. On the last day of our trip, the power went off at 5am. We assumed that it was a grid issue since the power is not all that reliable on the island. We were not overly concerned, we went diving and hung out n the beach all day. At some point that day, he came and brought more towels and sheets. At 5pm, we asked the neighboring houses if they had power and found out we were the only ones without power. After finding a local to help call him, he said he would come look but could not guarantee we would have power that night. We went to dinner and got a room at a hotel to ensure we had A/C and electric. The next morning he came to give us our deposit but NEVER apologized for not taking care of the power the first time he was at the house that day. All week long everyone had new bug bites each morning, except the morning we woke up at the hotel. There are bed bugs in the house! My family loves Roatan but we were never so happy to leave this house.

Owner's Response: I am currently in Europe for treatment of serious health issues. Philip tries too hard as is evident from the comments of these guests and that he changed sheets and towels on their last day!! He went to the airport to collect them, my fault he was too late as I gave him the wrong time, when he was not expected to. He says they told him they had been at the house for just a few minutes when he arrived there. Because of my circumstances I had become lax and did not have a contract with these people. The booking was for four but they arrived with five telling Philip they picked up the extra guest "along the way". I told him not to spoil their holiday by making an issue of it.
Unfortunately he did not tell me they were difficult and hostile from the start.
As for the electricity problem, for some reason the RECO outage had tripped our supply and Philip did not know. As soon as he found out there was no electricity he went to the house and put it back on.
There was no need for the guests to go elsewhere.
We do not have bugs, as far as I know there are no bedbugs in the whole of Roatan. I have certainly never heard of them. I just hope that these people did not bring them along with the extra guest.
What a shame there is no way of knowing what you will get when you take a booking and what a relief that these people will never come back. Sylvia

I must admit our flight into Roatan was a bit rough. But the excellent service and charming beach house surroundings at Bai Bai made up for all the troubles. Just steps away from the beach. Also offers beach decks with tables and hammocks. We used the available grill and supplies one night for lobster tails under the stars that lead us to the sea. The house had everything we needed, from morning coffee to cooking full gourmet meals. Not to mention, the wonderful restaurants surrounding Bai Bai. We felt safe, comfortable every night in our beds, where linens were changed and fresh beach towels were delivered. Thanks again Slyvia and Phillip, I know we will being you again. Bai Bai was absolutely a pleasurable island get away!!

REVIEW OF 11 DAY STAY IN BAI BAI HOUSE AT WEST BAY VILLAGE ROATAN, HONDURAS

  • 2 of 5
The owners are very kind. They picked us up at the airport, helped us get groceries on the way to our accomadations and took us back to the airport for our departure. The greatest asset of the facility is the view from the upstairs porch, down the sandy alley to the gorgeous beach. It gives you that visual contact with the beach without the noise when the beach becomes crowded. The second best attribute is that both of the guest beds are firm. The biggest draw back is that the water comes out of the showers and kitchen faucet at a bare trickle. It takes about 10 minutes or more for the toilet tanks to refill. I asked people who were renting in nearby houses whether or not they had water pressure problems. They said their water pressure was just fine. The new resort next door is not what has caused the unacceptable water pressure in the house we were staying in.

The listing description of the location was accurate. The photos were fairly good at representing the appearance of the rental property. It was clean enough but not particularly well maintained. Nearby activities that we enjoyed were primarily the snorkeling and walking along the beach to West End. It's fun to take the water taxi back to West Bay when the temparature is too hot to walk back.

While we appreciate things the owners did for us, we would not stay there again because of some significant maintenance problems...mainly the absence of water pressure.

HAD AN ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL STAY LAST WEEK

  • 5 of 5
We just spent a week at Sylvia's house on the beach and loved it. The description and pictures are spot on. It had plenty of space for our family of 4. Our teen spent much of the time reading in the hammock. The house is extremely clean, all the necessary kitchen supplies (including a coffee pot and microwave) are there for your use. A water cooler with purified water is also provided. The linens were all changed out mid way through our stay.

We had a great time on the deck, especially the hammock, and made frequent trips down the short walk to the beach. My son spent hours on the beach building sand castles in the spot you can see in the picture.

Sylvia picked us up at the airport and very graciously stopped at the main grocery store (which takes credit cards) so we could load up. We bought enough food for breakfast and lunches for the entire week - scrambled eggs, sausage, breakfast cereals, milk, pancakes, pb&j, turkey sandwiches etc.

West Bay Beach is lovely. Soft sand and incredibly beautiful water. There are enough restaurants up and down the beach to keep you fed for a week. Every one of them seems to have nightly specials (though they may be out of the main ingredient!) which helps the budget.

We felt very safe both in the area around the house and up and down the beach at night. Since it is currently the low season, places were fairly empty.

All in all the whole family wants to go back to both Roatan and if possible, rent this house for another vacation.
