Home with Potential but Very Disappointing
Review Submitted: November 23, 2011
Date of Stay: September 2011
A group of eleven 55+ ladies rented this house for a week. The area was beautiful but the house was a big disappointment. The main sitting room reeked of mold and was uninhabitable. There were cobwebs on many of the bed frames. The dining area was hardly adequate for a group of 11 yet the owner advertises the house could accomodate 14. There are 4 bathrooms but only 2 had showers. Eleven people used 2 bathrooms for showers. The other bathrooms had footed tubs that were rusted. Kitchen had a rusty coffee pot that we found unusable. There was no easy clean coated cookware. We ended up buying many items at the closest Walmart. It would have been nice to have the house cleaned before we arrived instead of after we left.
Owner's Response: We were very sorry to read this review. Unfortunately, the writer did not let us know of any of their concerns during their stay so we were unable to address their issues at the time.
We work very hard to clean and maintain our 100 year old summer cottage. Every inch of the home is thoroughly cleaned each season by expert cleaners, including carpet cleaners, window washers, painters, tennis court pros, and landscapers. In addition, The house is cleaned for at least 10 hours before each tenant arrives and all the linens are cleaned by an outside laundry; had a tenant had any issue the cleaner is nearby and able to come over at any time.
As to the specific items mentioned; the living room does not have mold but was unusually damp in September of last year after record rains during hurricane Irene. Given the rains from the storm, the house was inspected by a professional for mold- they did not find any. However, we did replace insulation under the house.
The dining area is more than adequate for 16; there are two side tables that can be added to the main table to allow for many diners.
The kitchen is well-stocked with the basics but on occassion items are removed by tenants during the season. We found a few of our cookpans and mixing bowls "missing" in October. We do not have non-stick pans due to health concerns regarding non-stick coatings. Our coffee pot was new this year, but on inspection in October only the secondary pot was found.
The claw foot tubs are original to the house (110 years old) and have been refinished but do have minor rust stains around the drains. We have two showers inside and one outside. We are planning to install a third shower this winter.
If you are seeking all the modern conveniences and pristine conditions, our house is not for you. The home is simple, clean, and has many original furnishings such as claw foot tubs, wicker furniture and original metal bed frames. It is lovingly cared for and well-maintained. We try to respond to any questions during a tenants stay within 24 hours. Unfortunately, this tenant did not contact us so we were never aware of any concerns.
