Overview

Castelli Villa Rental Photos and Description

Private 3 bedroom Villa; on edge of forest overlooking ancient stone village.

Our Villa is situated on a 20 acre property within the lush rolling hills of Abruzzo, overlooking the village of Castelli and backing onto the Gran Sasso National Park. The Villa is surrounded by majestic mountains, sweeping vistas and beautiful rural Italian countryside.

The Villa makes an excellent homebase for exploring the endless hidden gems of this unique region of Italy. The Adriatic Sea and its beaches are a 45 minute drive East. Rome is a 90 minute drive West. One passes hillside vineyards, fields of sunflowers and groves of olive trees along the winding country roads. The A24 is a short distance away. The scenic rural roads lead to ancient stone villages, mountain plateaus, pristine lakes all an area rich in history . In every direction untold hours of exploring and discovery await.

Abruzzo is known for it's rich farming traditions and this is reflected in the abundant and delicious regional cuisine. Local farmers and restaurants offer up their foods and dishes made with time-honored traditional methods. The local fare is beautifully complimented with the Montepulciano d' Abruzzo wines. Restaurants and cafes dot the region and in every town's piazza there is a spot to sit and sip an espresso or vino!

Castelli has flourished since the XI century when the Benedictine Abbey of San Salvatore introduced pottery to the area laying the foundations from which arose famous artists such as Orazio Pompei, the brothers Grue and Gentilli.

The tradition carries on to this day as Castelli houses the Ceramic Art Museum and the National School of Art. Ceramics are offered for sale year round in amongst the studios, shops, restaurants, and cafes which line the ancient town streets.

The villa has 3 bedrooms with a euro queen in each. Master has ensuite and a balcony. Upstairs a full bath ( shower) and downstairs a half bath. Master has a cot. There is a washer and a washline outside the laundry on the 2nd floor.

The historical town of Castelli lies in the heart of Abruzzo.

About KIm

Our families are being raised in a land thousands of miles away, still, the village where our parents and grandparents called home beckons us back to a more simple existence ...

KIm purchased this villa in 2002

Why KIm chose Castelli

Castelli is where our family is originally from. Even though we have lived in Canada for decades, our family's deep love of Italy has never waned. The beauty of the region and the quality of life in the mountain town draws us back each year. In 2002 we purchased the Villa which is surrounded by mountains and overlooks the valley and Castelli. We have updated and renovated it to provide a secluded location in which to relax and enjoy the region's food and culture.

What makes this villa unique

The Villa affords an excellent homebase for exploring the diverse region of Abruzzo. The A24 is 13 km away, and smaller, more leisurely routes are right outside our door. Castelli offers local shops, restaurants and cobblestoned paths for strolling. There are dozens of vibrant ceramic studios and shops offering fine majolica pottery in both traditional and modern styles. Castelli's piazza is a 12 minute walk from the villa. Although, the villa is atop a very steep drive and a quick drive into town allows for a less strenuous trip back!

The villa is very private and sits at the edge of a forest above farms and beside hillside pastures.

In the evenings the lights and musical sounds of Castelli drift across the valley and up to the Villa, reminding one of the joys of life in Italy.

Isola del Gran Sasso is a bustling town which is close nearby and a short trip in the car. It has a market and all kinds of shops and restaurants. Agritourismos in the area also offer plenty of local fare.

A great place to relax with great day trips nearby.

Spent a week at this wonderful villa that is about 2 km from Castelli - the ceramic capital of Italy. The steep drive up to the villa leaves you in total privacy in this very comfortable villa. The kitchen is well equipped and easily useable by anyone who knows their way around a kitchen, An excellent grocery store about 10 km from the villa - you pass it on the way to the villa. Several nice eating options in the small small village of Castelli. An easy 2+ hour drive from Rome with all but the last 13 km being autostrasa. Not for you if you are looking for a lot of action nearby but it was exactly what we were looking for - small village rural Italy.

Magic

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful Villa. Fernando got us settled in (between our limited Italian and his limited English, we managed just fine) and the rest of our time was magic. Every day was a new adventure, from our trips to Castelli and several other mountain villages and castles, to our excursion to the coast and hiking in the mountains. All of this was just a short drive (recommend taking the back road for some breathtaking scenery) and we came back each evening to the Villa, with its beautiful views and comfortable surroundings. We stopped by the supermercato in Isola, cooked some meals in the well equipped kitchen and enjoyed the stars. What wonderful people and what beautiful country. We couldn’t have asked for a better location!

A beautiful place in an amazing setting!

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful place in an amazing setting! The villa is a peaceful country home with a nicely outfitted kitchen in which we prepared risotto, pasta dishes, stew and typical Italian breakfasts. Every day we enjoyed wine and cheese in their cozy living room. We enjoyed our stay very much. The villa is well-maintained and easy to settle into. We enjoyed cooking our meals with local food, and used the villa as a jumping-off point for many happy visits to Castelli as well as the Adriatic, vineyards and other amazing mountain towns and castles.

Fernando and Maria were very welcoming and helpful, as were the villagers in Castelli. We were there in cooler weather and were very comfortable. Cherry trees and bloom could be seen from every window, warming spring sun made for plein air breakfasts in the courtyard. Seeing the Grand Sasso mountains from our bedroom window was awe-inspiring. The owners were kind and accommodating, and provided clear directions. We hope to stay there again in the future and share it with friends and family. Thank you for making our visit to Italy so special!

Beautiful Villa, beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in the Villa in Castelli. It was even better than we expected! The villa and the view were beautiful. The local contact Fernando and his wife Maria were very friendly and helpful in getting us to the Villa and oriented in though they knew about as much English as we did Italian - very little, but not a significant problem. We found a friend in the little grocery store in Castelli who spoke english and was extraordinarily helpful in our stay - even calling the local trail expert to sell me a map and explain some of the best local hiking trails around the area. We enjoyed several hikes and even got up high somewhere between Mt. Prena and Mt. Camicia and sat on a rock eating some local Salame sold at the butcher shop in Castelli - what a day!

I would recommend this villa to families or friends who just want a perfect place to get away and enjoy an Italian village, some peaceful evenings under the stars with awesome views, and the ability to go on some mountain hikes and day excursions to other mountiain villages.

Very helpful owner responded to all questions and provided great direction and information for the local contact to meet up with. The driveway is rather steep but well maintained - hey, it's a mountain villla!
