This mountain retreat is newly renovated, decorated and furnished in a casual, comfortable style. The first floor has a fully equipped kitchen w/breakfast bar. The dining room is right next to the kitchen and seats 10. The living room has a fireplace, 32' TV, DVD player and seating for six. The first floor bedroom has two twin beds. The bathroom has a shower. The second floor has two large bedrooms. The master has a queen bed, and a seating area. The other bedroom has a queen bed and two twin beds. The second floor bathroom is large with a shower/tub. The lower level has a game room complete with air hockey/small pool table and seating. There is an office w/desk. The family room has a 38' TV, DVD player, seating for ten, dining area, and stereo. It is the perfect entrance for the skier, as there is plenty of storage space for skis, etc. All furnishings, linens and towels are new and of high quality. There is internet access, cable TV and a land line for local calls

You will enjoy the Sunday River/Bethel area. Bethel is 'Maine's Most Beautiful Mountain Village'. The Bethel/Newry area is a place of restoration and relaxation. Whether you are seeking the exhilaration of the ski slopes, a quiet walk in the National Historic District or along the riverbank, you are in for a wonderful time. You can downhill ski at both Sunday River and Mount Abrams. Cross-country skiing is right next to Birch Haven at Carter's, in the village at Bethel Inn and at several other locations close by. The village offers unique shops, restaurants and cinema. White Mountain National Forest provides plenty of hiking. Grafton Notch State Park is unrivaled for scenic waterfalls. You can easily paddle and fish the Androscoggin River It's a great place to get away and all four seasons offer something extraordinary!!!

  • Take a nice hot shower after your active day. Each bathroom is good size with a linen closet or linen shelves that are fully stocked with plush towels. There are ample paper products and amenities such as body wash, shampoo and body lotion. Each bathroom has a large vanity with sink top, drawer and cabinet storage. Over each vanity is a large mirror with light fixture above. There are also full length mirrors in each bathroom (as well as in the upstairs hallway). There is a hair dryer, first aid kit, laundry baskets, and thick bathmats. Each bathroom has hooks for robes and towel bars. Both bathrooms are tastefully decorated, and each has a window with mini-blinds for privacy. The second floor bathroom measures 9' x 8'. The first floor bathroom measures 8 1/2' x 6 1/2'.

  • Snuggle into casual elegance. All furnishings, beds and bedding are new and of high quality. There are plenty of extra blankets, thows and pillows to keep everyone comfy. Each bedroom has a dresser, mirror, large closet, and bedside table(s). There are ceiling fans in each bedroom. Each bed has a reading lamp and there are clock radios in each bedroom. The Mission Bedroom features mission furniture. It has a reading area and a library table. The buttercream bedroom has lots of room with great light. The second floor bedrooms share the bathroom on the second floor. The first floor bedroom is separate from the other two bedrooms and is right next to the first floor bathroom. All of the bedrooms offer large dressers with plenty of storage. The queen sleeper sofa in the family room is on the lower level. It is comfortable and secluded from the other bedrooms. The Mission Bedroom and Buttercream Bedroom measure 18' x 15'. The first floor bedroom measures 13' x 10 1/2'.

Notes: Relax with two TVs - one in the living room (32') and one in the family room (38'). Enjoy the wood-burning fire place in the living room (fire wood is provided). There is a deck just outside the kitchen and the gas grill is next to the deck. The deck has a table, chairs and an umbrella. Tiki torches are next to the deck in the summer time. There are two telephones which are available for local calls. The house has wireless internet access, with the modem in the office. There is plenty of storage. The family room has two large closets which are great for stowing outdoor gear. There are two lockable ski lockers outside next to the family room entrance. All utilities are provided, including heat, internet, local phone service, electricity, fire wood, driveway plowing and trash removal. Also, we live locally and can be very responsive to your needs or questions. Room measurements: Game Room is 13' x 10'. Office is 10' x 6 1/2'. Family Room is 29' x 12 1/2'.

Skiing, Snow-shoeing and Tubing: Bethel has been named 'the greatest ski town in the universe' by Ski Magazine. Downhill skiing is available at Sunday River Ski Resort and Mount Abrams Family Resort. Right next to the house is Carter's Cross Country Ski Area which provides many miles of trails for both cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. In town at the Bethel Inn there are also cross country ski trails. You can ski to Songo Pond! Tubing is available at both Mount Abrams and Sunday River. Birch Haven is 11.5 miles to the base lodge of Sunday River Ski Resort. Local outfitters can provide a snow machine adventure if you are interested.

Kayaking and Canoeing: There is river access to the Androscoggin River right from the neighborhood. This stretch of the Androscoggin is part of the 60 mile canoe trail with many entrance and exit points along the way. Also, kayaking and canoeing can be enjoyed at many of the area lakes and ponds. Wildlife viewing is quite common on the river (moose, bald eagle, heron, etc.) and on the lakes (loon, bald eagle, etc.).

Bethel Village: Bethel is known as 'Maine's Most Beautiful Mountain Village.' The village offers many restaurants, coffee shops, and markets, as well as unique shops. Several walking pathways and guided tours are available in town. Part of downtown is designated as a National Historic District. The town green is the location of many year-round events like the art fair, 'chowdah' cook-off, and winter carnival. It is also a great place to sit and read, with the town library right across the street. Stroll through Gould Academy campus with its beautiful buildings and historic structures.

Wonderful Hiking Vacation Retreat

My husband and I rented Birch Haven for the summer of 2009 and were completely satisfied. The property is as described and even better than the pictures as some things have been added that are not shown.
The house was immaculate, the furniture very comfortable and appliances, kitchen dishes and cookware more than adequate. There is a small deck with table, umbrella and chairs (suitable for 4) which got lots of use by us. There was no lobster pot, however, and when I mentioned it to the owners, one appeared on the doorstep two days later. There are widescreen TV’s in the living room and lower room and very good cable service. Another feature we appreciated is broadband internet access. The owners, who live locally, were very responsive to our needs. The area is lovely; we have vacationed in Bethel many times and never tire of the beauty of the mountains, streams and waterfalls. The main attraction for us is the hiking and there is no limit to the trails. We hope to return to Birch Haven in the future.
