APPALACHIAN RETREAT: LUXURY SECLUDED 2008 BLUE RIDGE LOG CABIN

Boone Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Appalachian Retreat was completed in May 2008. It has been furnished exclusively at the Hickory Furniture Mart with top of the line leather mountain style furnishings. The house is log sided, with a red tin roof, two porches and three levels.

Each level has its own private bath and sitting area. The main level and lower level master suite each have a TV with DirecTV. The main level has a stereo system that is MP3 compatible, so bring your iPod! The kitchen has granite counters, stainless steel appliances, great dishes, serving pieces, wine glasses, cooking utensils. The owners outfitted this house not as a rental home, but as if they would use it full time.

This cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains has beautiful mountain views and is ideally located for visits to Boone and ASU, West Jefferson and the New River. The Blue Ridge Parkway entrance is five minutes away with great biking. Mountain biking and bicycle rentals are all close by. The owners have left travel brochures and biking guides to be used by the guests.

This cabin is in a great location to be able to have a quiet romantic getaway and then go into town for a great dinner. Blowing Rock and nearby Appalachian Ski Mountain is only 30 minutes away and the ski slopes of Beech and Sugar Mountains are about an hours drive. This cabin was purchased not just for its amazing looks, but for its fabulous location.

About Dhana Cohen

We live all over the place but the North Carolina mountains have always had a special pull for us. We love to bike ride and we love hiking and exploring the outdoors. This home has given us a great place to come together and relax to enjoy all that North Carolina has to offer us. Every trip up to our retreat is another opportunity to explore and visit our favorite places, new and old.

Dhana Cohen purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Dhana Cohen chose Boone

We fell in love with the area when we were kids and went to summer camp near Asheville. We knew we had to buy a home in the mountains. After one of us went to Appalachian State University we all spent enough time in the area to know that Northwest NC was the place. We searched all the surrounding areas and were lucky to find this new home in a perfect location. Our home is secluded yet we can get to Boone, Blowing Rock and West Jefferson in no time. We love being secluded, but having the ability to go ride Railroad Grade Rd and Kayak or float the New River. Our favorite night time adventure is driving the 25 minutes to Grassy Creek, NC to the River House for a fantastic Dinner and great company. We have furnished this house so that we never feel like we are in a rental, but that we are in our home. It is top notch and our little best kept secret. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We loved staying at the "cabin" this weekend! Cabin just doesn't do it justice..... It was the most relaxed I've seen my husband in I don't know how long. Thanks again for letting us rent it for the holiday weekend. I have already contacted my sister in AL to see if we could do a family weekend there, as it is elder friendly, for our parents.

Great Long Weekend

  • 5 of 5
This was the first time that we visited this area of North Carolina and we had a wonderful time in this cabin. It is absolutely beautiful. It has everything that you could possibly ask for to make your stay comfortable. The location is close to all the surrounding towns and the Blue Ridge Parkway, but you feel like you are a million miles away from it all. The owners were a pleasure to work with and we would highly recommend this cabin. We would love to rent this cabin again in the future.

MUST BRING FOUR WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE!!!

  • 1 of 5
This is a great cabin and very nice as described by other reviews. What is not mentioned is that you will need a four wheel drive vehicle to get to the house. The road leading to the house is very steep at the end and our front wheel drive Honda CRV was unable to get up it forwards. The only way to get up the steep grade was to reverse up with all the passengers out. This restricted our daily travels as we had to arrive back during daylight so we could get up to the cabin. The last night we did not make it back during daylight and had to go up backwards in the dark (and it was raining) and my wife and kids had to shine flashlights to guide me up the hill which was a bit sketchy.

We found it misleading that we were not made aware of the issue of getting up the hill until we had booked and paid fully for the house. The issue was not disclosed in the listing and only when we were sent directions to the house the day before our arrival was it made clear that we were going to struggle with the hill - the instructions even mention that the owner's own car can barely make the climb. My emails to the owner were ignored until the last day we were there and when I finally received a response it said that I should assume that a four wheel drive vehicle was needed.

We also found an old looking note on the counter stating that the dishwasher was not working. My email inquiring about it was ignored so to avoid causing a leak or something we washed all the dishes by hand, something else I have never encountered when renting a house. In general we did not find the furniture that comfortable as the chairs and couches are very deep and the pillows rather soft and not very supportive. The decor in the house is very attractive though and the wood finishes are beautiful - the downstairs has a reclaimed wood floor that is really stunning.

Overall the cabin is very nice and clean and we enjoyed our time there. We saw deer one evening and there were fireflies at night which was pretty dramatic in the pitch black night as the moon was not up. We enjoyed going to Boone and Blowing Rock and found the area easy to navigate and convenient. There is plenty of shopping in Boone and we bought our groceries there and cooked at the house mostly which was quiet and peaceful. The kids played a lot of foosball in the downstairs game room.

I would visit again if I had a suitable vehicle but ours struggled so much that I would not rent again unless I had a four wheel drive vehicle.

Owner's Response: We appreciate this guest letting everyone know that our mountain home has a steep climb. What I don't agree with is our information to this guest was given to him prior to him coming in an email. What you will see are the wonderful pictures that the home is indeed in the mountains overlooking a beautiful valley. His kind words about the home seems counter to the poor 1 star rating of the only complaint which was a street that is not on our property that gave him trouble getting up to our mountain retreat. I never received an email about the dishwasher, nor concern from any guest prior about the furniture being uncomfortable. Please read the other reviews, and judge for yourself, about this special home.

We had a great time. The place was spotless and a great place. You feel like you are at the end of the world but you aren't, there are neighbors if you need them. My two sisters and I just wanted to get away and reconnect and this was the perfect place.

Wonderful Place to Stay in the Mountains of NC

  • 5 of 5
My family and I recently stayed here for a weekend, and we could not have asked for a better place! The home was beautifully decorated, extremely clean and very comfortable. It's conveniently located (short drive to Boone, West Jefferson, Todd, etc.) and provided more space, atmosphere, and peace and quiet than one would ever get from a hotel room (or most cabins). Of the many places I have stayed during my visits to the mountains of NC, this place was the absolute best. My family and I hope to stay here again in the near future.

Our 'Appalachian Retreat' is located equally between Boone and West Jefferson in the town of Fleetwood. Great location for MerleFest, ASU football games and arts festivals, fishing, kayaking, biking, skiing, hiking, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Ashe County has become a vibrant vacation area with the charming small town feel and great access to the larger town of Boone. Great restaurants, shopping and outdoor activities are all nearby. This cabin is fantastic year round and especially for leaf viewing as it is sitting up high on a very wooded lot.

This brand new cabin is a real gem with each bedroom* having its own level and unique features. The game table is perfect for chess, backgammon, checkers, cards, puzzles and scrabble. The Foosball table is ready for a friendly game and a beer! The 2-sided gas fireplace sets a beautiful backdrop for having an evening glass of wine on the porch while listening to and watching the wildlife.

Other Activities: river floating, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, winery tours

Ski: Approxiamtely 30 minutes to Appalachian Ski Resort and around 45 to Beech and Sugar. Hawlsnest Tubing and Zip line ius around 30 minutes as well.
