What a disappointment

When we entered the rental, it smelled of old hamburger grease. There was a sign on the over-the-range microwave to use other microwave because it did not work. There was a hole in the wall. The fan in the bathroom had to be on in order for the dryer to work safely. Some of the bath products that were provided were partially used. The carpets were dirty. After discussing the cleanliness of the rental, the owner refunded my cleaning deposit.
There is no air conditioner and the rental is on a main street, so it is extremely loud.
The proximity to the beach is nice, but it was such a disappointment. I wanted to wear socks so I woudn't have to walk on the floor, and I washed all the sheets and towels before using them. It may be a great place for bachelors, but not for families.
Owner's Response: I am very sorry this family had an unpleasant experience. I made several attempts to assist them. After talking with them, I believe their issues stemmed from the fact that my condo does not have air conditioning. Most, if not all, the condos in Mission Beach do not have air conditioning. We do have ceiling fans in every room and extra fans if needed. With the windows open you get a nice ocean breeze.
It’s relevant to mention that these tenants had a very elderly relative with them, and in hindsight they probably should have stayed in an air-conditioned hotel with an elevator rather than experimenting for the first time with a vacation rental.
Regarding the cleanliness of condo, prior to the tenant’s arrival, one of my property managers inspected the unit but apparently missed looking under the microwave. I offered the tenants to have another cleaning person come over or I could return their cleaning fee. The tenants said they had already “wiped under the microwave so another cleaner was not needed”. In any case, I returned their cleaning fee immediately.
My condo is one unit west of Mission Blvd., which is convenient to both the bay and the ocean. I always provide the address to potential tenants so that they may see the proximity to Seaworld, Mission Bay and the ocean. All the windows are double paned to help with noise reduction. In June 2007, I had new carpet and flooring installed and the entire unit was painted.
Most my bookings are made by personal referrals. I have been renting my vacation condo since 1997, and have numerous families who rent the condo every single year and they also refer their friends. The fact is, despite this individual’s experience, this condo is very suitable for families and families almost exclusively make up my guest list.
