Our home in Atenas, is Bali-style - all wood and glass - perched on a ridge above the jungle with magnificent views of multiple mountain ranges. The house is filled with furniture and artifacts collected on our extensive travels. We've designed it to be a relaxing, zen-feeling retreat. It has 2 bedrooms/2.5 open-air bathrooms, a wrap-around infinity pool (great for doing short laps), and lovely decks and tropical gardens. From the breakfast deck you look out over jungle and mountain ranges and into the favorite toucan watching trees. The master-bedroom deck overhangs the jungle where we have seen mot-mots, trogans, carablanca monkeys and sloths. The sunset deck borders the pool and is perfect for evening cocktails and dining. Atenas is 45 minutes from the San Jose airport and within 1 or 2 hours of our house we have beaches, volcanoes, rain forests, several interesting cities, incredible plant nurseries and nature preserves. We're a perfect location for your Costa Rican vacation.

The house is on a hill-top 2 kilometres from Atenas, an agricultural town (lots of coffee plantations and orchid farms) of about 20, 000 people. We have several good restaurants, supermarkets, banks, shops and all the other amenities you will need. From our house you can take long walks on country roads and trails. From the deck we have seen many fabulous birds including the toucans that visit mornings and evenings. In the rainy season (it generally just rains in the afternoons) - we have heard howler monkeys; we've seen a sloth just hanging out in the trees below us, white-faced monkeys in the jungle next to the bedroom deck, and an anteater on our morning walk. San Jose (and its upscale suburb of Escazu), just 45 minutes away, is a sophisticated area of fabulous restaurants and boutiques, museums, English language bookstores and movies, and all the culture you could possibly want. We're located in the center of the country, so access to the rest of Costa Rica is easy.

  • The bathrooms are cantilevered out over the jungle and screened-in so that you feel like you're outdoors. While taking their showers, guests have seen a multitude of tropical birds and the occasional white-faced monkey troop passing by.

  • Each bedroom has its own screened-in bathroom, a private deck overlooking the jungle and access to a shared walled garden. The furniture is handmade from local guanacaste wood and the mattresses are special orthopedic ones to insure a good night's sleep. The bedrooms are decorated with textiles and artifacts purchased by the owners during their extensive travels in Central America. In the mornings, you will be awakened by a symphony of bird sounds and, while drinking your coffee on the deck, you may see monkeys or sloths in the adjacent jungle.

Alison and Chris have a wonderful house in Atenas, Costa Rica. It was a true joy to be able to stay at their villa. I cannot even begin to describe the beauty around the villa as well as inside! They are also very nice to deal with and have a book prepared with many day trips to take while in Costa Rica. Did I mention that they are also travel writers and wrote an excellent book on where to stay and places to be in Costa Rica! I was in Costa Rica for two weeks and enjoyed every moment of it!! You should rent this place and enjoy the villa and the people of Atenas!

This really is paradise....we didn't want to leave

We would highly recommend this home to anyone looking to visit Costa Rica short or long term. The house is beautiful and the description online does not do it justice. You are able to open all the walls of the house and feel as if you are living outdoors in a safe and comfortable setting - the Costa Rica way. The view is breathtaking and the sounds of the birds and the rain forest are something we miss now that we are no longer there. The house is easy to find and centrally located to get to many other CR locations with ease. We visited the pacific coast beaches and the Arenal Volcano and several towns and farms in between.

The house is perfectly equipped for cooking, relaxing, bird watching, hiking, and all the adventure outings are easy to get to as well.

The owners are travel writers and have given the house's design and setup great thought and detail which shows throughout. They have exceptional caretakers, Dennis and Gerardo as well who are accessible for whatever you might need be it suggestions for a great restaurant, directions to anywhere, advice, and some local flavor.

We recently spent two unforgettable weeks in the house. I spent the first week using it as my home office and was very comfortable and able to be connected with ease through my skype line and the wifi access in the house. The second week was all about adventure and relaxation.

Atenas itself is a special place indeed, and I cannot think of anywhere better to spend it than in this "Costa Rica Mountain Paradise".
