Baveno: (approx. 5.000 inhabitants) is located opposite the Borromeo Islands, in a mountainous region, which however, also resembles the Italian Riviera. This is an internationally renowned holiday resort – reflected in the beautiful villas – many dating back to the 19th century, among them Villa Henfrey (nowadays Villa Branca), where Queen Victoria of England stayed, and Villa Fedora, which belonged to the composer, Umberto Giordano. The lake ferry service in Baveno is the starting point from which many places on the lake may be visited. The splendid lake-side promenade, with its inviting restaurants, cafés, bars and shops is a highlight. 3 kms from Baveno is the attractive town of Feriolo, with its wonderful bay. Formerly a village of fishermen and quarry workers, Feriola has become a favourite with nature-lovers. Only 4 hours from Baveno is another internationally famous holiday resort, Stresa (approx. 5.000 inhabitants). Stresa has magnificent views of the Borromeo Islands and many splendid villas. There are several Art Nouveau hotels on the promenade. The local amenities include a cable railway to Motterone (1.491m above sea-level), Lido, watersports and tennis. There are three golf courses in the immediate vicinity. Many international conferences are held in Stresa and the Music Festival in September attracts many visitors.
