Rick's Retreat is a real treat! Starting with a trouble-free key pickupm, our stay was everything we wanted and needed in a Captiva Island vacation. The house was very clean and neat; every room was bright and cheerfully decorated, and the kitchen was well stocked with plenty of dishes and cookware for our family of five. The location of the property was excellent--a 2 minute walk up a sandy PRIVATE road (great for the kids on their bikes) to the wonderful, clean beach.
The home was also only a minute walk to Captiva's Main Street, where we took advantage of the corner Mexican restaurant for a tasty dinner outside our first night. We also went to the Bubble Room for a fun lunch. FOr dinners most nights, we cooked in--after taking a short drive to Sanibel to several markets for food (the markets in Captiva were, I have to say, so overpriced I just couldn't shop there).
Backat the house, we took advantage of the outside shower daily, and having beach towels, toys, chairs, and umbrella right at the house was so convenient. We rented bikes around the corner, but you certainly don't need bikes to get around, although we did use them to drive through South Seas (we saw a large pod of manatees there!) and I spent 2 hours biking the wonderful bike trails all the way to the Sanibel Light house! My teenagers loved the fact that they could walk around town by themselves, since it was so close by, and there was lots of food to eat (Starbucks around the corner!) near by. Older teens might be bored, though, since the island is really family oriented. You only need a car for the drive to and from the airport.
This was a wonderful vacation--very relaxing for my entire family--including children ages 14, 12, and 8. I wholeheartedly recommend Rick's Retreat!
