Spacious studio in a perfect location! It is tastefully furnished, well-lit, and opens onto a private deck and garden. Flat panel HD TV, cable connection with HBO, and Wi-Fi.
A private entrance leads down a plant-filled walkway to the red door of the Ashbury Garden Studio — an ideal refuge for those exploring the delights of San Francisco or those in San Francisco for extended stays. The quiet studio is at the back, garden-level of a 3-unit 1924 Edwardian building. Guests relax on the studio’s private deck to enjoy the quiet of the garden. The studio has stone counter-tops in the kitchen, a full stove with oven, Bosch dishwasher, and a queen-size bed.
The central location, on a tree-lined street in a friendly neighborhood, enables guests to walk to the colorful shops and restaurants of Haight-Ashbury and Cole Valley as well as nearby Golden Gate Park. See the former homes of the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and other greats just 2-3 blocks away.
The studio is 2 blocks from Haight Street, 3 blocks from Cole Valley and a 15 minute walk to Golden Gate Park. City destinations and the ocean/beach at the eastern part of the City are all easily reached by close public transportation.
Well-served by multiple bus lines (#6, #7, #33, #43, #37, #71) and light rail (N-Judah), you can ride directly to Ocean Beach (15 minutes), Civic Center and downtown shopping areas (10 – 15 minutes), the Embarcadero (15 minutes), the Castro (10 minutes), or the Mission (15 minutes). It’s a quick and easy to transfer to Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf buses or cable cars.
Our guests also enjoy easy walking to a wide range of delicious and inexpensive restaurants (Thai, Indian, Italian, American, Asian fusion, noodle shops) as well as upscale California-Asian and sushi restaurants. Easily reached by public transportation are numerous ethnic restaurants to satisfy any culinary interest! We’re happy to share our personal favorites.

My husband and I had never been to California, and really wanted to engross ourselves into the city and the lifestyle, rather than getting a cheap hotel somewhere outside of the city. This place was absolutely perfect! We felt like we were right in the middle of the hustle/bustle, yet the apartment was so quiet you could sleep with the windows open. The location is perfect for walking to Golden Gate Park, checking out the Haight/Ashbury district, and literally 1/2 a block from public transportation. We will most definitely be back and also be recommending this place to anyone who visits the city. Thanks Ellen and John!
We had the best stay at Ellen and John's Ashbury Garden Studio! We were so pleased to arrive and have the apartment be evening larger than the photos and oh so charming. Everything worked perfectly and it was immaculately cleaned, cozy and felt just like home. The neighborhood was perfect for us, you can walk everywhere, but super quiet in the apartment, nice neighbors and really well located. The hosts Ellen and John could not have been more accommodating, we wished we could have stayed longer! Anyone looking for a safe, clean and personal experience in the City, this place is for you. We will be back!!
The location is great, within easy (and interesting) walking distance to Haight Street, UCSF, the historic Castro Theater, Golden Gate Park, and many distinctive residential areas with fine architecture. A Muni pass for 3 or 7 days can be purchased at Cole Hardware, with the N-Judah line close by, and the #33 bus runs right up and down Ashbury. The studio itself is immaculate, has fast and reliable WiFi, DirecTV, beautiful garden and deck, very comfortable bed, and a well-equipped kitchen. Ellen has compiled an interesting an informative guide to SF in general and the Haight-Ashbury area in particular, and is always willing and eager to answer questions and make recommendations to ensure that her guests have the best possible experience.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay last year, this year's week was even better, and we are already looking at the calendar to book our next visit. Highly recommended.
We were at the studio for one week in August 2014 and we enjoyed our stay. The location of the studio is excellent, few blocks away from the Golden Gate Park, bus and subway stops at the corner of the street and a lot of services near the studio. Great neibourhood, beautiful Victorian houses all around.
The studio is well equipped and very clean. The bed is very comfortable.
The owners are very welcoming and helpful.
We strongly recommend the studio for couples who want to discover San Francisco!
I really enjoyed my stay here. Travelling alone, as a woman, can be daunting, but I felt entirely comfortable here. The owner was welcoming, giving restaurant and sight seeing suggestions. The garden was the big drawing feature of this place for me- private, relaxing (bring a sweater or 5 though). I loved having a full kitchen, with a market close by I bought food all week to snack on. If you are interested in the Haight Ashbury area then this place is definitely a gem, and such a great price. The only complaint I have (and- it is no complaint, just a fact) was that the re was only a stand up shower, no bath tub. Climbing up and down the San Francisco hills all day had my feet wanting a soak or two. The place was lovely, on a lower/main floor of a walk up, and I feel lucky to have stayed there. Lots of wonderful food and parks all so close by.
