Hale Pueo Kea (House of the White Owl) is located just outside of Hawi, in the Big Island’s beautiful North Kohala District. Away from the crowds, but convenient to so many activities, it also offers refuge from the heat and humidity found at sea level.
The house is on 10 quiet wooded acres, with an orchard offering bananas, limes, oranges, grapefruit, papayas, and macadamia nuts. There are two bedrooms, one bath, a fully equipped kitchen, living room with fireplace, dining room, laundry, and a large lanai. Nearby towns of Kapa’au and Hawi have fine restaurants, art galleries, and shopping. The larger town of Waimea is 19 miles up the mountain, and is the home of the famous Parker Ranch.
The best beaches on the island are a 30 minute drive from the house. As you drive the undeveloped, rocky shoreline, watch for whales from November through April. The Big Island has fabulous hiking, horseback riding, archeological sites, and of course, Volcanoes National Park. The only problem is finding the time to fit it all in.

My Husband and I own and operate a Ranch a short distance from Hale Pueo Kea. We chose Kohala, where cows and horses are in heaven before they die. We raise animals on only grass and rain for a exclusive buyers club and we work to steward our land to serve our community.

We purchased this home in 2011. We have always admired the smart design and sustaining features and the native plants in the garden. We are excited to share it with visitors and add our special highlights to your visit. We can offer recommendations for massage, yoga, Feldenkrais, Chinese medicine and local CSA farms that can provide you with fresh produce during your stay.

Fresh fruit from the orchard including apple bananas, so delicious. Sandy beaches are 30 minutes away, yet there are amazing swim and snorkel spots much closer. Our evenings are cooler and we have fewer bugs as a result. The Kohala Mountain Road is one of the most beautiful scenic drives in this world. The Farmers Markets are delightful. Our small town is safe and welcoming and tourists have been known to go home to sell their homes and then move here.
The drive up to the house is absolutely incredible. The house is peaceful and set back from the road. Distant views of the ocean and watching the sunset made this rental a gem! The hosts were very gracious and left us a basket of goodies including fresh fruit, homemade dried curried coconut and macadamia nuts. We were also allowed to pick fresh fruit from the trees next to the property. This home had everything we were looking for. Quiet, nice outdoor patio, open concept living area, unique feel to it, and private. The property is nearly surrounded by a fence as there are horses on the property. They added to the atmosphere and my husband and I loved watching them from the patio. Booking this rental was easy and hassle free and we received a quick response when inquiring. I would highly recommend this rental to anyone looking for a relaxing peaceful getaway with a unique touch. It is a little bit of a drive to get to the coastline as the Kohala area sits up high above the coastline, but the views are so incredible we did not mind one bit. The nearby Pololu Valley was our favorite beach/hike. I would stay here again if we ever get the chance to come back! Good value for the price.
We really enjoyed our stay. It was exactly what we expected as posted on the VRBO website. It was nice to focus on activities on the north half of the island and we found plenty to do.
Truly wonderful, peaceful place to recharge your batteries and come back to your senses! All you need is one day to sit on the patio overlooking the ocean and you will be back to normal! Very clean, well stocked and modern kitchen (all you need are some groceries; utensils, cooking supplies, spices, etc.), plenty of thick bath towels, blankets and bedding. Washer/dryer. All there! So quiet at night all you can hear is nothing! Trees loaded with avocados, oranges and bananas. The owner is a truly gracious and wonderful person! All you need bring is a change of clothing (even have new toothbrushes) and food. Everything within reasonable driving distance! I cannot wait to stay again!
We had a great time staying at the well-appointed Hale Pueo Kea. Sunsets, stars and grilling every night meant that we could really relax and adjust to "island time"! We loved that the kitchen/family room area was separate from the bedrooms as it allowed us the freedom to start our day whenever we wanted without bothering anyone.
Whether you're exploring the island or content with staying put, this is a great home to spend your vacation in. The Kohala hills location also meant that the weather never got too hot and never got too cold. This location is definitely worth the extra driving time.

We were greeted by Jileen, the owner, and brought fruit and other gifts to welcome us. She is super wonderful and generous. The place, for being a smaller place than most, felt large and very open. We always felt very comfortable. The views were amazing, and the star watching could not be beat. My wife and I enjoyed the design so much we may building something similar on our ranch property. The only downside was the internet was slow and the tv was limited; however, it turned out that was the best thing ever. In the evenings, we would cook our dinner on the grill, watch the sunset and when it got dark we watched nature's tv. It did not disappoint! Its so dark there you can see the stars so clearly. You feel a million miles away but you are only a short drive from Hawi or a longer, very scenic drive to Waimea. The place was clean and Jileen is so nice, I could not imagine not staying there again and totally disconnecting with the world, its amazing and I highly recommend it.
What a nice place! My family spent five nights at Hale Pueo Kea and we loved it. Jileen has thought of everything. If you need it, it is probably there. The setting is very pretty and the weather is super. The cool evenings are great and a break from the warmer weather near the beaches on the coast below. Kohala is a lovely part of the Big Island and Hale Pueo Kea is an outstanding place to enjoy it from. Jileen is certainly a thoughtful host and has done a great job with this rental.
