Live among locals in old European neighborhood

My husband and I will remember our three days at Alfama House as some of the most memorable and most cherished days of our two week trip abroad. What a privilege it was to live among the truly lovely people of the Alfama area! Francois' apartment had everything we needed and more. The space is clean and nicely furnished. Pack lightly knowing that you will be able to wash your clothes in the machine and hang them to dry outside on the lines, just as the neighbors do. We enjoyed listening to Portugese music on the cds and player provided, although at night we could hear Fado through our open windows for free! Just a few doors down is a bakery that we visited each morning for coffee and croissants. Across the street and down, the first one you will see on a corner, is a wonderful restaurant run by a local couple. Just a few doors beyond is a place to buy produce...we bought the most delicious strawberries for 65c for a small bag. There is a larger market in the train station. Not everyone speaks English, but if you make the effort to learn a few key words...bom dia, por favor, obrigado...you will be fine. The family living in the ground floor apartment was very helpful in a couple of instances. The young daughter speaks English. The location of the apt. is within walking distance to everything. The new computer in the apt. will assist you in making trip plans, emails, etc. Francois is more than willing to give suggestions as well....wines, cheeses, etc. He responded to all my emails in a very timely manner. From my initial correspondance with Francois, I knew we were in for a wonderful experience. I am so happpy that we took a chance on Alfama House. We hope to return someday and will definately recommend it to our friends and family.
