An Enchanting Jewel Box

Luminaire Santa Barbara, California
Review Submitted: January 8, 2009 Date of Stay: March 2008
This elegant and cozy cottage was the perfect antidote to the crazy days on the set of the major motion picture that I was on and filming locally. I relocated from the West Coast to do this gig! As a lighting designer, I am sensitive to my environment and very discriminating...so I was very pleased with everything!
The furnishings, amenities, art work and gardens were luxurious. Not your typical rental property. The area of Saugatuck Shores was lovely... My partner and I walked on the beach, strolled along the seawall and watched sunrises and sunsets .. all right outside out front door. We cooked gourmet meals in the high end kitchen (Viking and Sub-Zero) and lazed in front of the wood burning fireplace. It was heaven!
The cottage was close to the town of Westport and funky South Norwalk and a 5 minute drive to the train station to head into New York City. Perfect!
The owner was gracious, friendly, professional and caring. She was very knowledgeable about other activities to take in... as we vacationed when the filming was over. She belongs in the hospitality business!
Our 7 week stay on the East Coast was enhanced by this jewel box of a cottage! I highly recommend it and have referred some friends... Do not hesitate. Book now!!

Late October Stay

Patrick&Linda Dublin, Ireland
Review Submitted: November 9, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
We stayed in this property in late October 2009. It is in an excellent location tucked off the road in a quiet cul de sac. We had a very enjoyable stay and the well maintained cottage had all that we required for our visit, including a fully equipped kitchen, laundry facilities, etc. The owner Jenniann was very helpful and was available to contact should we encounter any difficulties with the property throughout our stay (which I'm glad to say we didn't). It is an excellent location if one wants easy access to New York as well as wishing to explore coastal and upstate Connecticut.

We had young children with us (the property has two double beds so the kids might have to share) and there was lots to do in the area. For example, we took them to the Children's Museum and The Maritime Aquarium in nearby Norwalk as well as on a trip to JDs Orchard for some apple and pumpkin picking about an hour north of Westport. For those who want to shop there's a good outlet Mall in Clinton which is a 50 minute drive east of Westport. If you like pizza I would definitely recommend Joe's Pizza on Post Road, though there's ample good quality diners and restaurants in the area providing a range of different ethnic quisines.

Very disappointed...

Susan T Venice Florida
Review Submitted: November 4, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
Since the owner has requested six times that I write a “5 star” review (how professional is that?), I thought I better get to it, although my rating will not be 5 stars. Let me explain... The cottage is cute and located at the end of a tiny lane, so as far as location.. it was nice. Yes, you can walk to the sound and the views are lovely. Bathrooms were good and funky as advertised. The living area was comfortable. However........This home was advertised as having a “Chef's” kitchen. I can hardly agree to that. It did offer a Viking stove and I can say nothing further. I am an avid cook and was looking forward to preparing gourmet meals. The cooking pots and pans were in terrible condition, plus I felt I needed to wash them before using them. Glad I looked in the oven before turning it on, since an array of pans were stored there. I also brought my own spices and thankfully so, since I am not sure how long the spices had been there. They looked disgusting. The refrigerator was fine with the exception of requiring a firm tug to open the door. Although the cleaning lady had just been there that morning I found the home dirty. The linens and towels were initially not included (whoever heard of that?) so I was offered to “rent” them for four nights. In retrospect I should have visited Bed and Bath and bought my own. I felt like I was using someone's hand me downs. And then, the utility fee !!! When I really thought about it, the utility fees for four nights seemed extremely high. Parking was off street, but beware if you have more than one car... you may need to back out all the way down the street. And here is the kicker. We were there for only four nights and the owner requested to show the property to prospective tenants. Reluctantly I said yes, but clearly not happy for being asked. The owner told me it was “convenient” for them. Well what about your paying customers? I was told it would be a quick in and out. Not entirely true. They stayed for what seemed a half hour or so. The one thing that really angered us was when the prospective tenants came in and the husband went immediately to our bathroom for around 15 minutes !!! The owner never asked us if he could use our private facilities!!! Yes............ I will NOT return.
Owner's Response: Very disappointed, indeed! All of my dealings with this traveler led me to believe that she was totally satisfied with the property, the amenities and my professionalism. She dd not voice a concern or complaint via email or to me in person.. Everything was great!! She asked if I would do a barter trade and mentioned a referral with someone locally. As this review and her sentiments are the complete opposite, I was unable to rectify any of her concerns during the lease term. I was standing in the kitchen with her and her husband, having a visit..nothing was said about "spices" the Calphalon cookware or the tight seal of the Sub-Zero refrigerator (standard). I did not even know that she was a gourmet cook and her decision to rent this house was based on the Chef's kitchen. I urge communication.

Yes, it is a Chef's kitchen, with a Viking stove, Sub-Zero refrig, Asco D/W and LG W/D. There are 3 sets of dishes, one dozen each of wine glasses and coffee mugs. There is baking equipment, plenty of sharp knives, utensils, linen napkins/tablecloths , mixing bowels, storage containers and 14 pieces of Calphalon cookware. There is a toaster, tea pot, coffee machine, blender and a slow cooker. The other gourmet cooks have been completely pleased.

I want to shed clarity as to the maintenance of the house, what is done after each traveler leaves and what is done quarterly in this regard. Since this traveler left and the time of this review, all carpets and curtains have been professionally cleaned.. along with blankets, throws and down comforters. The LR furniture cushions and DR chair covers have been laundered . The shower curtain liner has been replaced. All the Calphalon cookware has been rubbed clean with their special cleaner. Some pieces have been replaced. My housekeeper is in between tenancies, and yes, she was there when this traveler arrived earlier than her scheduled arrival ( which I happily accommodated).
As to the issue of the showing. I make every effort to not disturb tenants and if so, give plenty of lead time.. but sometimes it is unavoidable. This tenant is real estate agent. I felt that I had an understanding with her about the nature of this business. Her description of the events is totally distorted. The people were there for 5 minutes, I spoke with them outside the house and off the property.. Of-course I asked if he could wash his hands!!.

Professional decorum, customer service and a pristine house are my priorities.

Completely Satisfied Returning Traveler!!

Roundabout! Austin, Texas
Review Submitted: October 28, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
My wife and I were very fortunate to stay at this elegant and cozy property again, as it books quickly. I returned, with my wife, this time, in September for 3 weeks. As always, the owner was accommodating, accessible, responsive, professional and gracious. She did what she said she would do!

The house remains beautifully decorated and extremely clean. My wife is very discriminating and she was extremely pleased! We love the fireplace and the high end electronics!! We took the linen/towel option and everything was of high quality and pretty!! We found everything in order, the amenities accurate and all was provided that was listed on this site. We did not evidence any wear and tear or dirty conditions from our last visit (more than 1 year ago). This owner prides herself on maintaining the house and it definitely shows!

We have recommended this property to others and we highly urge you to book! You will be completely satisfied and thrilled!! We will be back!!
Do not hesitate, book now!

Worn, Run Down and Dirty - Inside and Out

OceanStay NY,Ny
Review Submitted: October 19, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Do not be seduced by the charming location and situation.
interior - deep dirt through out - a few illustrations - jets in bathtub were black with mold; year old newspaper under washing machine; plastic ups under stove; Weber outdoor grill racks layered with baked in cooking residue; base boards through out house marked with grease stains and dirt marks; dog hairs in freezer.
Coffee pot and nearly all the plates were chipped. Prior to use, used lots of arm muscle to scrub off remnants of other people's use of the pots and pans.
Kitchen towels filled with holes. Bathroom towels, edges raveled, stained.
Bed linens, some edges literally sown together. Every living room cushion and rug filled with stains. Nearly every base board heater falling off its rack, filled with dust and dirt marks.
Outside: Awnings - lots of mold.
Owner is literal about what is there at the moment you assume the lease is what you get. With a lease that called for fully furnished house and lasting more than two months, a leasee would think it simple to send a reminder about some absent, core items. Here is the owner's response, in her own words, to an email request for these basics - "Also, as a courtesy, I will provide a toilet bowl brush and bucket for your cleaning needs."
My recommendation: no one should rent this property from this owner, ever. .
Owner's Response: The tone and content of this review does not surprise me as it is indicative of the very difficult and unreasonable demeanor of this traveler. Her admitted hypersensitivity to dirt, dust and smells, revealed only after she accepted the keys, are reflected in her opinions and actions.

These statements are grossly exaggerated, unfounded and undocumented. I pride myself on a pristine house, as can be seen in the pictures, and have an excellent housekeeper that is readily available. This traveler would not allow my housekeeper in to do interim cleanings.

I also pride myself on great customer service, gracious hospitality and the genuine desire to make a connection with my clients. Leaving a bottle of wine, a note, flowers from the garden or breakfast food for late night overseas guests is standard.. In this case I never was able to make that connection with this traveler. Nothing I did or said was acceptable, complete enough or fast enough and for the first month I was bombarded daily with lengthy emails as to "condition" of the interior and exterior. These were not just "getting to know the house" queries. Also, I found items she broke that she did not tell me about that required replacement and repair. It was a no win situation. She was also difficult with my maintenance man and the gardener.

The cleanliness of the house is of the highest standard, as are the furnishings, appliances and linens/towels. Everything that is advertised on the site is provided. My client base is upscale and discriminating, and the property and my customer service and professionalism has always met or exceeded their high expectations.

This review should be taken as an aberration.
