Hidden down a driveway over 1/2 mile long, this secluded 240 acre old growth forest offers peace and quiet. The private shoreline is 1,400 feet long, edging an extremely clear 270 acre recreational lake. Several miles of private groomed trails for hiking, skiing or snowshoeing, wind up and down the sandy oak hilltops and the boggy tamarack lowlands. Add a 20 acre private lake with beaver. Bald eagles, loons and every known critter in Wisconsin frequent this neighborhood. One weekend, over 65 bird species were identified by one birder.
The cabin is a Vermont Post & Beam timber-house made from massive Eastern White Pine. Interior walls and ceilings are knotty white pine paneling. The main room vaults 24 feet up, with a wood stove as a focal point. Modern kitchen. Great dinning area with woods and lake views. 4 bedrooms upstairs with open balcony. Sunroom. Full basement.
Cabin is located on northern side of the lake, benefiting from southwesterly breezes most all spring, summer and fall. This greatly reduces insect pests and allows use of deck, yard and beach without need of insect repellant. Sit on the deck and watch the sun set. Mornings and evenings are very quiet, as Matthews Lake has a no-wake rule between 5PM and 10AM.
Enjoy the 2 canoes and 2 kayaks supplied for use on the lake. Or take them down the wild Namekogan River, the headwaters to the St. Croix National Scenic River Route(trailer for canoes and kayaks supplied). Watch the trout, osprey, otters or sandy bottom rush by in the clearest waters you have ever floated down. Shuttle service for canoeing the Namekogan is just two miles away.
Hayward, Spooner and other historic towns are nearby for shopping, restaurants and other fun. Several golf courses are a short drive. Snowmobile trails are just down the road. And Wilderness - everywhere around you. The nearest neighbors cannot be seen or heard most of the year.
