The Island Farm was the perfect retreat for my extended family. When I started planning a summer vacation for our family I was challenged to find a place to stay that would have something for everyone….grandparents who prefer a place to relax out of the sun, 4 parents who wanted to be in the sun and be active and 6 (yes, six) kids between the ages of 9 and 14 with varied interests. When we found the listing for The Island Farm, we knew we had found a gem but did not even realize until we got there just how perfect it was for the twelve of us.
The Farm was so much fun for young and old. The kids were up and out to see the animals and feed them at 6:30 in the morning. We would find them walking the baby goats on leashes, holding bunnies and running with the newborn miniature pony as if it were the family dog. They also found a litter of kittens and enjoyed helping the momma take good care of them.
The lake with the dock was perfect for jumping, fishing and our favorite, watching the beautiful sunsets. The paddle boat, canoe and row boat all got a workout while we were there. We rode bikes, went on interesting walks and enjoyed cooking together in the well equipped kitchen. We loved being able to sit as a family to eat at the dining room table that accommodated all of us. We had family whiffle ball tournaments out on the back lawn, frozen drinks on the screened in porch, made s’mores at the fire pit and watched fireworks over the lake. We did not leave The Island Farm all week except to run out for groceries.
There was plenty of bed space and it was so nice to be away and not have anyone sleeping on floors, couches or pull-outs. There are plenty of bathrooms and never a wait which is a great thing when you have twelve people staying under one roof.
Debbie and Mike, the owners, were so gracious and made us feel very welcome. I enjoyed chatting with them everyday and they could not do enough to help us with anything we needed...from borrowing a frisbee to telling us about the local history.
We can’t wait to go back!
We vacationed with extended family (12 in total) once again this year and my sister struck gold when she found Island Farm. The only time we saw the kids was to watch them swim or when they were hungry. Most mornings started with the kids running out to the barn to feed the baby goats and miniature ponies and ended with cocktails on the front lawn in the shade of the old Maple overlooking the lake.
We researched day trips, but never left the house other than for groceries. Between swimming, boating, fishing, bike riding along the lake, frisbee and wiffle ball games, there wasn't much more we needed. The house and property are large enough to find quiet spots to read and just relax. We never once felt like we were falling over each other. We were lucky enough to be there for the 4th of July to watch the fireworks display from their beach while we watches from the front lawn without obstruction or crowds.
We can't say enough about the owners, Debbie and Mike. They made us feel extremely welcome and were there for anything we needed. We will definitely be back.
From the moment we arrived we knew this was going to be a wonderful vacation. Mike & Debbie greeted us and made us feel welcome and comfortable, right away we felt like we've know them forever. When we entered the house all the windows were open and a refreshing lake breeze was blowing through the curtains making it feel like an old fashion farmhouse. The house was more impressive than the photos on their website can relay. The kitchen was amazing it had every pot, pan, baking sheet, measuring cup, dish, bowl, and utensil that you could think of, there was even two refridgerators and a full size washer and dryer. Hot water was plentiful even with 13 of us washing clothes and showering. They also offered a great library of books, magazines, wifi, satelite televison and games if you ever come inside, which fortunately we didn't because our weather was so perfect. We rarely left the place our days consisted of sitting at the beach in the cushioned lounge chairs, hanging out uner the big shade trees in the yard, kayaking, boating, swimming, eating, laughing at each other as we tried the row boat and just staring at the beautiful view of the lake. We were also lucky enough to spend time with their horses and help bottle feed their baby goats and cow, which was a big highlight for us. If you do wander off to explore make sure you return by sunset, the sunsets were amazing and completely different each night. Many nights we watched them from their front screen porch that has seating for at least 8. The water was so clean you could see clear to the bottom. The house itself was very roomy and comfortable we were never overcrowded for the whole 7 days even with 13 people. They have a mix of antiques with modern equipment that looks antique and it makes you feel like you have gone back in time. Our family consisted of our Mom who just turned 83 the day before and her 6 grown children and their families. It was the perfect place for our family to get together even though 90% of them always vacation at the ocean and were not looking forward to spending a week at a lake they were very amazed at the wonderful vacation they had at Lake Champlain and would do it again and again.
There is a sign hanging in the house that says it all..."No matter where we travel or whatever road we take we will always remember our days spent at the lake".
Thank you so much Mike and Debbie you went above and beyond our expectations. The Obue Family, Orange, MA
4 generations of our family - aged 83 years to 18 months - came on this vacation. My parents grew up, were married and built their first house in Vermont. We brought my mom here to show her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren their "roots". We had 5 families ; 2 had children. We left only twice to sightsee - but would gladly have stayed "home". Incredible family time - bonfires at night, making smores, great fishing, boating experiences for kids/adults. Sunsets were spectacular - our favorite time of day was sitting by the water at night going out in the boats or fishing from the dock and watching them. Mornings were a wonderful time on the front porch - a gathering place for not-so-awake people to drink their coffee and slowly and gently begin their day. Subsequent cups of coffee were ususally shared down on the deck on the beach where the children practiced skipping rocks, building sand creations, or just finding "shells" or sticks for the next bonfire. There were days it was noon and we were on the beach- still in our pajamas. The acreage provided time for our 4 children to run, jump, spin, feed the horses. Adults played baseball, soccer, football, badmitton and rode bicycles. The charm and beauty of this rental are beyond words. It brought us all back to a simpler time when families just spent time being families - enjoying each other. The house is huge... we had 13 people and not once did it get crowded. There was plenty of table space for us to sit together at meals and enough bedroom/baths for us all to have our own space when needed. The wonderful smell of country air permeated the house. When you walked outside the abundance of flowers and gardens made you feel royal. It was immaculate - if we needed anything the owners were a house away and it was delivered immediately. The only negative thing I can say is that we had to leave after a week. Had it been available - we would have continued our stay. I truly hate to give this rental such high praise because it will entice others to rent it next year - and I truly want to be selfish and keep it for those of us who want to return to this piece of heaven. Mike and Debbie need to be congratulated for all the work they have put into restoring and maintaing such a family treasure. It truly was a vacation that will be remebered for years - and a memory of love, laughter, and the importance of family that will last a lifetime.
There are no words to describe this lovely house and all of it's amenities. Our first reaction as we pulled up was of awe and "WOW!!" There was only the two of us, but we were so excited!! The listing and the description of the house were understated!! The house is gorgeous with so many antiques and toys to keep you busy for a lifetime. We did not want to leave and were fortunate enough to be able to extend our vacation by a few days. The house was immaculate!! I would recommend it and have to anyone and everyone!! We had total R&R!! We could not wait to get up every morning and think of what the venture for the day would be. No planning, just taking it a day at a time. The views, sunsets, island and people were just incredible. Not to mention the hospitality of Mike and Debbie was exceptional!! They are a delightful family and made sure that our every need was met or exceeded. They are not intrusive, but were there if you needed them or just to chat, which we enjoyed very much!! The house can accomodate quite large parties and had many family reunions. The toys on the beach are a lot of fun and the water is crystal clear, even at 20 or more feet. The temperature of the water the first week of September was in the 72 to 75 degree range. Beautiful!! We enjoyed daytime, as well as sunset swims!! The views of the Adirondack mountains were also breathtaking! We took over 300 pictures with our DSLR. We are definitely planning to go back!! The past few years we have been to Portsmouth NH, Ogunquit MA and last year Bar Harbor MA on Mount Desert Island. Our vacation on Isle La Motte was by far the best!! We have also been all over the Carribean, etc. However again, nothing compared to the luxury of this vacation. The home is lovely and if you are reading this, it is well worth the price. It exceeds the value of the price!! If it were our home we could not rent it as Mike and Debbie have. We thank them for opening their timeless gorgeous home to us and for just an incredible adventurous time. There is just so much to see and do!! Lake Champlain is so clean and just pure fun, as well a the oldest reefs in the world to visit. We highly recommend this home, location and owners hospitality to all!! We wish you a delightful time, as we know you will definitely have one!!
