A Mixed Review

Some people would enjoy Casa Mermaid; our family did not. This rental is not for those with high standards of cleanliness and order. The house is crowded with furniture, kitschy artwork fills the walls and every surface. It is not clean. Most furniture and the house itself is ramshackle (for example, not one door opens and closes properly; there are no closets, just shelves and poles in the bedrooms). The living room is tiny and not comfortable. The kitchen is in the middle of the house, small, with no windows or venting, greasy and hot!
My husband, myself, our son and daughter-in-law spent a week at Casa Mermaid in January 2009. The entire house was uncomfortably warm. The bedroom a/cs were loud and inefficient. The kitchen was sweltering and dirty, the pots and pans were in bad shape. Bathrooms were grungy and not pleasant. In short, we were fairly uncomfortable.
There are some compensations. The beach is right across the street, and it is lovely. The pool is nice. There's a computer with a fast Internet connection. Puerto Morelos is a pleasant town with lots of restaurants and several places to hang out at night. It's all within walking distance. There's an artisan market on the opposite end of town from the house where you can buy hammocks and other items at good prices.
People are friendly, and you avoid the over-development of most of the Yucatan. For grocery shopping you drive half-an-hour to Playa del Carmen and take your pick of large modern supermarkets. For fruit you cross the highway to the colonia (where the Mexican part of the town is located), where there's a great fruit/veggie stand. Some of the kitschy art in the house is fun. The staff who care for the house are very helpful and nice. Jeannie, the owner, was pleasant to deal with and accommodating. It's just that her standards of housekeeping and mine are poles apart.
Owner's Response: First, let me apologize for my maid, she left to get a more permanent job else where. It was a process to replace her and the home was neglected. I have been there myself and the home is now spotless and clean. Pots and pans have been replaced, all doors are working, always were, and there is NO ramshackled furniture.
As far as the size of the rooms, shelves in bedrooms, closets and non A/C in the home. We are not selling the house Just renting one week.
All the furniture has been newly re-upholstered within the last year and is clean, fresh and in good condition.
We are located just across the street from the ocean and there is a constant ocean breeze. If you are one that needs A/C then you should rent a home with central A/C. Our A/C'S are all brand new wall units and have thermostats and remotes, they are designed to A/C the bedrooms only and are very efficient and quite.
Many renters with large groups have commented how comfortable the home is and many have loved the art work including myself.
If you stay in Casa Mermaid and have any problem with anything, please contact me by email and I will have the problem fixed asap. I do not feel that it is fare to stay in someones home and not let them know what the problems are, but write a negative comment on the web, at least give me a chance to rectify the problem.
We now have a lovely maid Isabella, that comes in three times per week with her 10 year old daughter.
I invite you to come see for yourself, if you are unsure about renting Casa Mermaid drop by any time and inspect our lovely home.
