Puerto Morelos has been designated National Reef Park because of it's efforts to preserve the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere and the second largest in the world. Jacques Cousteau referred to this stretch of the Caribbean as having 'Gin Clear Water'. This world famous reef is just 500 meters from shore. You can walk to the nearby restaurants, central plaza, pharmacy, and grocery store. We are 4 blocks from the main square.
The Crococoon Zoo and famous Botanical Gardens are merely a ten-minute taxi drive from the Mermaid. The exciting nightlife and shopping in the Cancun Hotel Zone and Playa del Carmen are both about 30 minutes away. Also close by is the large city of Cancun, where you can experience the real Mexico and it's limitless shopping opportunities. Puerto Morelos is the gateway to the Mayan Riviera where it's possible to satisfy the Indiana Jones in you at many ancient Mayan archeology sites. These Mexican treasures include Chichen Itza, Tulum, El Rey, Coba, Muyil, and Uxmal just to mention a few. All along the Riviera Maya are the beautiful Cenotes where picnicking, snorkeling, diving, and nature walks are a special and unique experience for the foreign tourist and native Mexican alike.
There are also several large Eco Parks which are magical places to learn about local flora, fauna, and ancient and mysterious cultures -- or just plain relax in the tropical climate under a coconut palm with your favorite refreshment in hand. There is so much to see, experience, and learn about that you will want to return again and again. Our goal and mission at The Mermaid is to have every guest return home with stories of wonder and adventure, proclaiming it to be their best vacation ever. We know our guests are our best advertising. Check with us often and see what's new.

My favorite thing to do is 'go on vacation'. The way that I have found to always 'go on vacation is to own the vacation Home.
Jeannie purchased this house in 2003
Why Jeannie chose Puerto Morelos
The very first time I arrived in Puerto Morelos, I knew I would soon live here. I love the quaintness of the town, the charm of the people, the closeness of a small community where everyone helps everyone. Its like living on an Island.
What makes this house unique
Some of my favorite things in Puerto Morelos at Casa Mermaid is the beach and the pool, outstanding. The snorkeling at the reef or just along the shore, crystal clear water of the Caribbean Coast. I love to go to town on Wed morning when the fresh produce street market is open. I get to see friends new and old and I bet to buy all organic veggies, home made fresh cheese & herbs. Then every day but Sunday the fishing boats come in at 3PM, you can go right to the pier and purchase a fish, they will clean and filet it for you, and they always have a recipe for you.You must check out THE LITTLE MEXICAN COOKING SCHOOL just 2 doors down. Cat the Owner has the cutest Gift Shop and SUNDAY BRUNCH is excellent . You may need reservations. There are so many great things to do I never run out of new places and things to explore. In winter there is a different Festival in the square every weekend. One more thing I love, Full Moon Bonfire on the Beach. You have to find it, it keeps moving, but it is there all night long!!
Guestbook comments from the owner
We went to Puerto Morelos in December and it was one of the best
vacations we have ever had as a family. We were 5 adults and 3
children, (ages 4,5, & 8). We had plenty of space. My husband and I
had the one of the king bedrooms (with a bathroom across from it) on
the main floor, our two children shared the other king bedroom on the
main floor (with an ensuite). Our friends had the upstairs bedrooms
which both had ensuite bathrooms so everyone had their own private
bathroom. The veranda on the top floor provided and unobstructed view
of the beach. We had breakfast there every morning and watched the
beach. What a wonderful way to start the day.
The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you can imagine (yes, a
dishwasher). The only thing we brought was our stove top espresso
machine and food. Travelling with kids we have found it is always
better to have things you know they will eat. We all sat together for
each meal. I think you will have space. The local restaurants were
great also. We loved all of them. In the evenings alot of the
children would gather in the town square and play soccer or simply
play in the playground.
There was no road noise. The town basically shuts down around 10:00pm
and before that there isn't much going on. Perfect for families with
We loved the fact that we had our own private accommodation with a
pool. No sharing with anyone. The kids would get up each day and go
swimming (as soon as I could get some cheerios in them) for hours it
seemed. We also went swimming after dinner on some evenings!! I highly
recommend that you take life vests for the kids. We felt better
knowing that if for any reason they slipped into the pool, they were
safe. Jimmy, the caretaker, came every day to see that the pool was
running smoothly. He was also a great resource and very friendly.
We loved the town and have recommended Casa Mermaid to all of our
friends!!! It isn't a luxurious hotel, but more of a family home.
There was even videos for the kids to watch, which surprisingly did
come in handy. They loved the Little Rascals!!! If your looking for a
more quiet off the beaten path sort of vacation then this is the place
for you. There were plenty of towels which was great. Jeannie even let
us use her computer to check email etc. We used is everyday. It came
in very handy when we wanted to do research for day trips. There were
alot of travel books in the living room as well magazines a
