Luna Azul can accommodate groups of up to 10 people and has been furnished with families in mind. Facilities were constructed to North American standards for safety and convenience. In addition, maintenance and service are provided by a separately housed caretaker. Ask them about fresh fruit from the property! Nearby restaurants and Hotel Punta Islita offers four star dining, spa and golf opportunities.
The location makes this an adventure property. The environment creates an opportunity to indulge across a full spectrum from solitude to elegance to local nightlife at several bars in the area. Rather than retreat to air conditioned isolation, the house is designed for life 'in the breeze' - soaking in the rich tropical sights, sounds and smells inaccessible to those that decline to adjust to equatorial climates. That's not to say comfort is secondary! Shade, pools, outdoor showers, hammocks and fans are strategically maintained to encourage guests to constantly seek interaction with the unique experiences this elevated refuge presents: monkeys howling at sunrise, tree frogs singing at night, birds playing in the trees in the late afternoon shade, raptors, vultures and storks seeking thermals - coming up and right over your head as you relax in the pool ... can't get that stuff in a hotel room!
If Surfing is what you're looking for, look no further. Playa Camaronal access requires no river crossings so it's ready to go even during wet season ... 15 minutes from the house. Playa San Miguel can produce phenomenal combo swells. Other breaks in the area are yours to explore! Just a beginner? Soft top surfboards and our recommended beach is a sure recipe for success.
Accomodations - Lounging - Adventure: Luna Azul can accommodate groups of up to 10 people and has been furnished with families in mind. Facilities were constructed to North American standards for safety and convenience. There's plenty of space for two families to enjoy lounging by the pool, swinging in hammocks, cooking, swimming, floating and relaxing on top of this comfortable, breeze-swept ridgeline ... away from it all but with assistance at the ready should you need it. A 'jungle' trail has been gently maintained on the property below the house for morning walks and wildlife viewing - guided by onsite staff if desired! A favorite routine is to pack up coolers full of goodies and sand chairs, head to one of the local beaches for a morning surf/swim then return to the pool, shade and breeze for the afternoon. Simple, adventurous, satisfying.
Wide Range of Beach Opportunities: Fantastic family surf adventures waiting for those ready to venture out to the broad range of beaches within 30 minutes drive of the house. Playa Coyote has a gentle sloping, sheltered beach that is great for whitewash adventures and the inexperienced. Grab one of the soft-top surfboards at the house and get pics of the kids on their first stand-up! Playa San Miguel has a more challenging wave and great beach play family-style. This is our go-to beach for surf, coolers of beer, fresh fruit and lazy mornings in the shade of coco palms while the tide gets just right for a paddle out. Smaller surf is beginner friendly, sizeable combo swells can challenge any surfing level. Playa Camaronal is a fantastic break that can hold pretty good size. Limited shade and heavily sloped beach make this primarily a surfer's beach. There are shade opportunities and a turtle sanctuary for those not surfing - just ask and we'll tell you how to dial up a memorable family day at any beach.
Food!: The convenience of breakfast at your own pace and time is invaluable. The morning light playing on the estuary below is a constant distraction. Local groceries in Pueblo Nuevo, Bejuco, Corrozalito, San Francisco de Coyote mean fresh produce and provisions for any level of culinary activity desired. Very convenient to stop and grab a cool drink and any items you need on the way home from the beaches. Produce delivery can be arranged a couple days a week through our caretaker. Don't feel like making lunch or dinner? Dining choices range from rustic bocas (mouthfulls - like tapas) and bar fare to fried whole pargo (red snapper caught locally) drizzled with fresh mandarina juice in Pueblo Nuevo (La Conga and Los Corrales) to very comfortable view dining at Casa Caletas in near Playa Coyote and 4 star international dining at Punta Islita resort ... all within 30 minutes via country road from the property.
While Southern California has great climate, we wanted to find a place where the surf was warm year round ... and a bit less crowded.
After many years of trips to surf with Tico friends, we decided to explore properties in the areas we enjoyed the most ... away from crowded line ups and tourism crowds. This area's gentle ranching culture, fabulous beaches, predictable surf and beautiful weather lured us. The view and steady breezes of this ridgetop property sealed the deal.
Many feel they want to stay 'on the beach' when seeking tropical relaxation. We've found that the local beaches are best enjoyed mornings and evenings with our unique ridge top siesta nest. A refreshing beverage, a dip in the pool, rich mid day breezes and clothing optional privacy can make that evening walk on the beach before dinner even more enjoyable!!!
We have just returned from 2 weeks at Luna azul and will definitely be back! We have rented homes all over the world and this is truly a very special home in a gorgeous location. Our family loved the extremely remote and private setting, the empty beaches and surf and the endless sunshine. You really have a gem in Luna azul.
Absolutely fabulous in every way!
House is perfect for privacy, view, and amenities. Antonio (caretaker) literally took care of our every need including fresh eggs chicken and fish and arranged multiple activities for us. Will totally go again!
Extraordinary view and comfort. We were totally relaxed on day 2, the serenity of the beautiful property, comfortable beds and care of the grounds keepers lending to the much needed escape. Next time I'll fish day 1 or 2 and surf the rest of the vacation. Highly recommended destination.
My husband & I stayed at Luna Azul from 2/29/14-3/4/14. I wish I were there now! The house is beautiful and the patio was divine! The furnishings inside and out were very comfortable. We spent all our time outside only going in to go to bed. The sunsets were spectacular with 4 monkeys playing in the tree next to the pool at the same time. Antonio and his wife were quite welcoming and made our stay very nice. My husband and I have been traveling throughout the Caribbean and Central America for many years and I have to say that this is the safest we have ever felt. We felt comfortable enough to leave the slider open at night. The hill that the house is on is too steep to try to climb and any cars must go through the locked gate @ Antonio's house. In fact the whole area is very safe. I was a little skeptical about no air conditioning in the bedrooms, however I wouldn't have used it if it was there. The breezes at night are heavenly, we even used a blanket a few of the nights! We went to local restaurants and hotels for meals and drinks and there were very few other tourists there. The beaches are beautiful and we were often the only people on them. I highly recommend this property for a relaxing vacation. We can't wait to go back!
We loved the house, the view, and the caretakers. Wonderful experience all around and lots of excursions in the immediate area.
The house is better than advertised! My expectations were totally exceeded on every count. The view is spectacular; the house and infinity pool are immaculate. The caretaker on the property takes care of every detail. It is remote but lots of beaches and restaurants a short distance away. It was one of the best vacations I have ever had and hope to go back.
Just got back from twelve days at Luna Azul and "Wow!" says it all. The house is luxurious and modern in a beautiful natural setting. The views from the house and pool are amazing (the pictures on the site do not do it justice). From the pool area you have a 270 degree view of nothing but natural Costa Rica. No other houses, no bill boards, no traffic lights, no t-shirt shops, just you and natural Costa Rica (and an occasional group of monkeys swinging by or parrots flying overhead). If you want a relaxing way to get away form it all, you found it here.
The local people consist mostly of farmers and ranchers and are the nicest people you will ever meet. Just down the hill is Pueblo Nuevo, a small town with two restaurants and a small grocery. Several nights we stopped to have a beer and chat with the locals who were always very welcoming. Karaoke is a must see!
The beaches are fabulous. San Miguel is a short five minute drive and must be two to three miles long. The largest crowd of people I saw on the beach was six. We almost always had the place to ourselves. Another favorite is Camaronal. At this beach is a group of volunteers which watch over the sea turtle eggs. If you like surfing, you won't be disappointed with the numerous spots in the area.
The Luna Azul owners gave us a long list of things to do in addition to lounging at the pool and hitting the beach. There are waterfalls, zip lines, nature trails, a butterfly house, and horseback riding to name a few. We couldn't do everything, so we definitely are coming back.
Relax and experience the richness of Guanacaste in your own private Villa. Wake up each day to breathtaking views of the ocean from your bed while the monkeys and the birds chatter with the sounds of the surf in the background. This rustic area of the Nicoya Peninsula offers a very friendly ranching community with many pristine beaches, a wide range of local restaurants, and a relaxed tropical lifestyle. Enjoy the beaches, points or horseback riding then retreat to an ultra-private oasis and a dip in the pool. If you must, stay in touch with home tap into 3G WiFi router for a skype or email - poolside!
Designed for comfort and convenience, Luna Azul boasts 3 bedrooms with 4.5 private bathrooms, a fully provisioned kitchen with a gas BBQ and an infinity edge pool with a swim up bar. The most unique benefit of your stay is the spectacular, private view from every location on the property.
Other Activities: Local Carnival, Rodeo, Motocross, kayaking, bio-tours, seasonal events. A Scarlet Macaw sanctuary has established feeding times - a must see. A 10 minute drive to Islita Airport allows you to meet a gyrocopter for an unbelievable air tour of local area. 20 minute tour circles the house, skirts along the beaches to Punta Coyote and climbs up for whale-watching on the way back to the airport ... make sure you have a wrist strap for that camera!
Hotel Punta Islita is very accommodating to local residences whenever the hotel is not full. Just a call to the reservations desk sets you up for a round of golf in a gorgeous tropical setting while your spouse enjoys spa privileges. That same call can lead to dinner reservations, afternoon drinks at the bar ... Many families have planned weddings at the hotel while some guests stay at Luna Azul ... resort convenience and Luna Azul privacy!
