Hale Moana is a Non-Smoking studio nestled beneath two lovely shade trees with a 'treehouse' view. Our studio is cooled by refreshing island tradewinds and by the shade from our Monkeypod and Tamarind Trees.
Hale Moana has interior teak and bamboo furnishings which rest on a cool, quartzite slate tile floor. Private parking & entry to a 750+ square foot studio and lanai. The interior also has a vaulted ceiling with skylights and plenty of light throughout. Gas two-burner cooking inside and a gas BBQ grill outside. 39' TV. Wifi - password provided.
Once settled in at Hale Moana, you will be a few delightfully sandy paces to beautiful Kailua Bay and Kalama Beach with views of Flat island, the Mokulua islands (Moku Nui and Moku Iki), outer islands (sometimes Molokai and Maui are visible in the distance) and wonderful sunrises too on our East facing, windward side of the island. Listen to the birds, ocean and breezes...
Send us an e-mail for studio availability! Also see our on-line calendar. Flexible minimum stay. Many happy visits and repeats. Aloha for now!
Guest comments: 'We had a wonderful time here! Thanks for all the extras, especially the boogie boards! It was so nice to have the kitchenette so we could eat in. The (welcome) binder was very informative. Thank you for everything!' B&E
Guest comment: 'This vacation was paradise, not at least because of this great place to stay! Though Germany is far, far away - we would love to come back and we will. Mahalo for everything (we will miss all the flowers!) N&T
Guest comment: 'We absolutely loved our stay here! Your place is so cute and we loved all the art and Hawaiian touches. Thank you for your hospitality & for the rose petals & lei - a very sweet touch. Our wedding was absolutely wonderful as well. We will certainly return & recommend your place to our friends. T&K
This home was built for our tutu, Moana, in 1941; it was one of the first houses in the neighborhood, when the streets were paved with crushed coral. Moana married and moved to Kailua, from Waikiki, to raise a family of three. The older generation remained in Waikiki, in the family home there, until the mid '50's. We built onto the main house in 2003 to create what is now our studio, Hale Moana. We hope you enjoy the space we've created as much as our guests, friends and family members do.
"Mahalo nui. We loved EVERY MINUTE of our stay in your guest studio. May Kailua remain free of hotel chains and resorts! People here are so friendly, treat us like old friends. We must come back again someday! Aloha."
I did a lot of research about where to stay in Oahu, and the Kailua area seemed ideal for a mix of tropical Hawaii with access to urban choices like restaurants and stores. Hale Moana is an exceptionally wonderful place to stay in. It was actually even more beautiful than the website was able to show it. The landscaping, and the decor inside capture the beauty of Hawaii. The owner, Jennifer, has created an absolutely lovely place to stay in. Starting the day with breakfast on the private lanai, surrounded by lush scenery, was so relaxing. The nearby beach is lovely, and not crowded. Kailua is a great starting point for exploring the windward coast and the North Shore. And then coming back to the peace and serenity of Hale Moana was icing on the cake.
What an amazing stay we had in Kailua. Our "home" was perfect for us. Jennifer really puts so much thought into the little details. We were greeted with fresh flowers and such a clean studio. The beach is only a 3 minute walk . A very private and quiet beach that was perfect to watch sunrise. The downtown area is very cool. We loved the central location of where we stayed because we were able to drive to North Shore and Waikiki Beach. Only complaint was that we didn't book a longer trip. Next time for sure!! The hubby promises to take me back and this is where I want to stay again!! Mahalo
Our stay could not have been more wonderful. Hale Moana is the perfect place to stay--lovely, perfectly situated, fabulous shower, every amenity (and them some), and a gracious host. This is our second trip to Kailua and though we had a wonderful time and great stay on our previous trip, we did not know what we were missing by not staying at Hale Moana. Staying here made our visit like a dream! Our one question was about the need for air conditioning (which Hale Moana doesn't have) and it couldn't have been less of an issue--great breeze, wonderful air flow, and terrific fan(s). In fact, I had to use two blankets! We book a lot through VRBO and do look at the reviews--we urge anyone who is thinking of booking at Hale Moana to do so! Thank you, Jennifer, for making the entire process a joy and for all the thoughtfulness that went into ensuring a perfect stay for your guests!
We had a great time staying at this property. The cottage is in a great location - close to the beach, restaurants and very easy as a launching point for touring the rest of the island. We loved the way the unit was decorated and spent most evenings sitting on the lanai grilling our dinner. The bed was comfortable and the parking convenient. The unit was stocked with just about everything we needed for our stay. The owners were very friendly and easy to work with. We look forward to staying again!
We really enjoyed staying in this wonderful ohana while we were on Oahu to see family. The well-equipped studio, which is so close to the beach and to Kailua-town, allowed us to balance the demands of our family visits with peaceful and rejuvenating breaks at Hale Moana. Some of our favorite things about the place are its amazing banyan tree sheltering the studio, the way the unit is designed for privacy, the lovely touches provided like fresh flowers for our arrival, the cleanliness of the studio even in a tropical climate, the overall quality of furniture and amenities, and the warmth of our host, Jennifer. She was always a phone call or text message away, and she gave us great tips for a fun evening in Honolulu. The full size fridge came in handy for snacks and beverages and to preserve our many Poke selections from Tamura's. We also made use of the washer/dryer, but we didn't have a chance to use the gas grill on the lanai...maybe next time.
A favorite memory from this trip is taking one the mats provided down to Kalama Beach after an evening rain storm had passed and sitting on the beach as the clouds cleared away to reveal a three-quarter moon and more stars than most of us can see in our backyards at home. We hope you get to experience such magic.
Hale Moana is the perfect place to use as your base for exploring Oahu. Its amazing to be out of the traffic jam of Waikiki. Kailua beach access is across the street, MAYBE a 5 minute walk. Lanikai is a 5 minute drive, as is downtown Kailua (but you could walk if you wanted). Honolulu/waikiki/pearl harbor were all about a 20-30 minute drive, and the North Shore was about an hour.
The condo is spacious, immaculate, modern, with everything you could need including a very comfortable bed. It looks exactly like the pictures. Outdoor access to the bathroom/shower is key when coming back sandy or dirty from a day exploring. We weren't able to enjoy the patio due to weather, but there was nice patio furniture and a grill available. The kitchen has the bare essentials, but you could cook a full meal if you were motivated. We mostly used it for breakfast and to pack lunches. Oh, and alcohol.
Jennifer was great; very available by email before the trip, and easy to reach by phone for questions during our stay. There were some transient power issues during our stay related to a storm, which she was completely on top of and were fixed as soon as possible.
Our local recommendations are Tamura's for poke (yes, at a liquor store), Agnes's for portugese donuts, paddleboards from Kailua kayaking co, Kalapawai market for breakfast sandwiches, snacks and coffee
We highly recommend you stay here. Say hi to Gary (our gecko friend) who hung out with us during our stay. Mahalo!
Kailua - windward side of Oahu. Nicely situated, beautiful town and ocean. Between Waimanalo and Kaneohe. Main roads in and out are Kamehameha Highway ('circle island' route, 'beach road'), Pali Highway (Kailua to Honolulu/Waikiki) and H3 Highway (Kailua to Pearl Harbor).
Other Activities: boating, basketball court, shopping, kayaking, wildlife viewing, spa, miniature golf
