Victorian House: 6 BR/3 BA, Sleeps 10 Adults + 1 Child

Since we began to offer vacation rentals at our house in 2007, our guests have been delighted with the wonderful views and comfortable, well-equipped house. The Lobster Trap offers all the charm of a 1900-vintage house with completely updated kitchens, baths, laundry, and modern conveniences for your vacation on the coast of Maine. The location is truly spectacular, with 100 feet of frontage on Stonington's harbor. We even have a 2-person kayak you can use to paddle around the shoreline.

The house covers three floors, and the first and second each have fully equipped kitchens -- perfect for several couples to vacation together.  Of course, free WiFi, phones, cable TV’s, DVD players, laundry, and hair dryers are included. Here are the details:

FIRST FLOOR (sleeps 2)

As every visitor to the Lobster Trap says, 'Wow, what a view!'  The first floor of the house sits one story above street level and has a wide, wrap-around deck that always offers cool and refreshing breezes. If you can tear yourself away from the deck, you'll find an open, sunny living room (with gas fireplace) and dining room, plus a cozy library with loveseat. The walls are graced with paintings collected through the years. The one bedroom on this level has two twin beds that are securely fastened together and made up as a king, with end tables and good reading lights for each. A full kitchen with gas stove and dishwasher, the bathroom with tub/shower, and a laundry room with new LG steam front-loading washer and dryer complete this space.

SECOND FLOOR (sleeps 3)

The view and the living space only get better on the second floor. You'll see the ocean out every window!  One large room extends the entire width of the house, with well equipped kitchen and attractively appointed dining and living areas, full bath with shower, and sunlight galore!  Facing due south, you'll gasp at the glorious sunrises, sunsets, rainbows, and moonrises from this vantage point. Two bedrooms are on this floor:  a small one with extra-long twin bed plus the computer desk, and the master bedroom with very comfy king-sized bed. All linens and colorful quilts are provided.  A bathroom with shower is accessible from this bedroom as well as the kitchen.  We also provide a variety of staple items (spices, flour, sugar, some condiments) and ample paper goods and soaps/detergents.

THIRD FLOOR (sleeps 5)

And saving the best for last:  If the extended family wants to join you on vacation, head upstairs! The third floor features the Crow's Nest, or turret room, the perfect spot to sit and read, paint, or enjoy an evening cocktail. There is also a double bed in this room. The charming front bedroom has a queen and looks out over the water. Another sunny bedroom with twin bed looks east down the Thorofare.  The last room is at the back of the house, looking up hill toward the village, and a studio couch masquerades as a cozy daytime window seat, providing extra sleeping if needed for a child or small adult. (This level is not available in the winter--no heat, no water.)

IN CONCLUSION:

With south-facing exposure and many large windows, The Lobster Trap enjoys brilliant sunshine. But many guests find watching the fog banks creep in over the islands or a rip-roaring storm even more fascinating! No worries: we have central heat on the 1st and 2nd floors, so you'll always be comfortable. AC is not needed on Stonington's waterfront, even during the dog days of summer; just open the windows!

About Ellen Dinsmore

My parents bought this picturesque old Victorian in 1970, just as Ray and I were starting our life together. It became our summer vacation destination as we raised our two sons: we all loved the cool ocean breezes, boating out to the many islands for picnics and exploration, and of course the family times together over the freshest seafood in the world! Lobsters bought at the dock, mussels gathered on the islands, Mom's fish chowder . . . Life just doesn't get any better!

We moved to Stonington full-time in 2003 because it's such a pleasure to live in a place where one constantly stops to admire the sheer beauty of the water, the islands, the moon and brilliant stars at night. And life in a small community provides so many opportunities to admire creativity, to learn something new, to share your own talents, to help your neighbors, and to laugh with friends.

What makes this house unique

The Lobster Trap has a fabulous location on the waterfront! There is always something going on in the Deer Isle Thorofare: all sizes and shapes of working lobster boats, the mail boats making their scheduled trips each day, the stunning windjammers weaving their way in and out of the islands, and the many beautiful sailboats and occasional motor yachts passing through. It's sometimes hard to concentrate on that book you're reading!

In addition, of course, The Trap has two full kitchens, enabling two families plus a couple extras to have some space during their vacations! Some like to be up at dawn, watching the lobster boats head out to fish, while others might prefer a more leisurely start to their day.

An awesome retreat!

Thanks, Ray and Ellen, for having such a great place to rent. We loved our three-plus weeks here and enjoyed everything about the house: location, views, homey feeling. You have made "The Lobster Trap" an awesome retreat.

We hope to return one day to Stonington. It is truly a very special place.

Late in our visit we watched the video called "Life by Lobster" and wished we had found it sooner. Great documentary on lobster fishing. Thanks!

Our family’s first visit to Maine was a memorable one!

We have one more night left at The Lobster Trap, and we hate to see it end! Our family really enjoyed our time here--we certainly ate our way through the week! The evenings have been peaceful and beautiful!

Acadia National Park near Bar Harbor was spectacular--do take a ride up to the top of Cadillac Mountain. It is a sight to see.

The Lobster Trap was the most comfortable spot with so many beautiful appointments. We loved all of the unique paintings and decorative pieces. We have all learned about the historical significance of The Lobster Trap.

Be sure to visit Penobscot East Resource Center. It really is interesting, and we learned about conservation of the local fisheries. It is the green building at the end of the pier near Fisherman’s Friend Restaurant.

This our first visit to Maine, and it will be a memorable one!

The Lobster Trap had a great view for the 4th of July fireworks!

We are only halfway through our week and already peace has descended on our family of six. So far it has been cold, rainy, and foggy, and yet we are all enjoying this time. Our family slogan is, “Stonington is so laid back, they don’t know what fast-forward is!” The harbor is a continuous show: the comings and goings of the lobstermen are so interesting.

Ah! Midweek, and the sun shines! A ride on the mail boat to Isle au Haut and dinner at the Factory Tavern capped the day. We all enjoyed the 4th of July fireworks -- we couldn’t have had a better seat! With hours and hours of restful sleep and relaxation, it is sadly time to return home where all the kids will scatter back to their friends and routine. Thanks, Ellen

Exceeded all our expextations

We chose the Lobster Trap based on the pictures and the location. We were looking for something on the water and away from the crowds. After a leisurely road trip from Tennessee, we had a great week watching the boats and exploring the area.

The house is wonderfully equipped. We didn't do a lot of cooking, but it was obvious everything we would need was provided. We did try to put a dent in the local lobster supply at the restruants Though! While we were there the leaves started changing, so we enjoyed beautiful fall colors on the way home.

Didn't get to meet Ellen as we were out a lot. Maybe next time!

Exceptionally well-appointed. All you need is provided; could well be two separate units on two levels. Across the street access for beaching and launching kayaks. Interesting before-dawn choreography of lobstermen running with lights to fuel and load bait shops as their day's work begins. Televisions, DVDs, and video players all over the place. Laundry, lobster cookers, you name it and the owners have provided it. Bookshelves are well stocked. This is a place to relax, tour shops, get on the water and chill for a week. Plenty of nooks and crannies to get away and read. Down side:a septuagenarian's schlepping his wife’s and his own luggage up to the third floor is a bit of a challenge but you only need to do it once. Computer wi fi sign in register has about 12 characters and 14 zeroes so the registry field in our relatively new laptop wouldn't let us onto the network. Must have been designed by a demented programmer. Exceedingly warm and gracious host and hostess. This was a wonderful place to stay and a week's time wasn't enough. Way to go Ellen and Ray. Your parents would have been proud of what you've done to the building and how you're keeping it.

Cozy enough for a couple, convenient for two couples (each having your own complete living area), or great for a family reunion! We are offering the use of our deep-water mooring (for your boat less than 20 feet) and a two-person, sit-on-top-style kayak (with signed waiver of liability). Although this is our own home, we have been in the real estate and vacation rental business for years and can offer professional management, practical local advice, and hands-on caretaking if the need should arise!
