Photos and Description of the Coeur d 'Alene vacation house rental
6 Bedrooms, 2 1/2 Baths, Ample living/entertainment space, sleeps 11

This spacious house has almost always been the home of a doctor beginning with Dr Dwyer in the 1920's, Dr Carlsson in the 1940's, and Dr. Don and Dr. Jane Gumprecht in 1951. The Gumprecht children, three of whom are themselves doctors , offer this gracious accommodation for your vacation enjoyment. Situated in the Historic, peaceful Fort Grounds Neighborhood, it is right in the middle of all that makes Coeur d'Alene famous. The neighborhood was born before the automobile, when everyone walked. It remains within easy walking distance of most everything. Confirm this by doing a map search of Military Drive. Then visit the web sites of the CDA Visitors Bureau and the nearby Coeur d'Alene Resort for a more complete run down of the area's attractions, close-in and farther out, summer and winter. If you can tolerate purple prose, read Homeaway listing #189429 (premiere beach house) for more neighborhood history, pointers, and details. We intend a vacation of cherished memories.

Coeur d'Alene and Fort Grounds History: The beginnings of Coeur d'Alene can be traced to the establishment of Fort Sherman in 1878 on the property now known as the Fort Grounds neighborhood. This was one of a string of forts built to protect settlers in response to the 1876 Custer massacre. The garrison eventually left to fight in the Spanish American war and the fort was disbanded. The property was auctioned off and subdivided to become one of the early neighborhoods. The Doctors' Inn is approximately 100 years old, having been constructed soon thereafter. The crooked nature of Military Drive is owing to the fact that the original street weaved through a great number of huge ponderosa pines that have either fallen down (some over houses) or were taken down to prevent same. The local Indians were sharp traders so they were referred to by the original French traders as having the 'heart of an awl' or pointed hearts, hence the curious name of the town. The Resort sits where steamboats once met the railroad.

.

Activities: The Fort Grounds location guarantees ease of walking access to the beach, park (with its unique wooden playground modeled on a Fort Sherman theme and also its bandshell), downtown shops, restaurants, and sidewalk cafes, museums, public library, community college (performing arts, art on the green, etc), The Coeur d'Alene Resort (with its several lounges, boardwalk, Fine Dining and family fare), the world famous Hudson's Hamburgers (written up in the Boston Globe, Gourmet Magazine, the front page of USA Today, Sunset Magazine, and named by the food editor of the Wall Street Journal as the best $2.00 hamburger in America), bike rental shops, seaplane rides, dinner cruises, sightseeing cruises, jet ski rental, windsurfing, parasailing, and I think I'll come up for air after the longest sentence you've ever read. A water park is only 3 miles and shopping malls are 20 minutes or less in 2 directions. Interstate 90 is 2 miles. The CDA Visitors Bureau can fill in what I have omitted.

Golf and Ski: The Coeur d'Alene Resort is home to the famous floating golf green and there is opportunity to play if you enquire early. The Coeur d'Alene Public Golf Course is dramatically cut out of pine forest and is amazingly well maintained, with a wonderful driving range and short game practice area. Near the Spokane airport, Indian Canyon is a well-maintained municipal course with uniquely dramatic terrain and scenery. For many years it regularly made the list of top publinx courses in the USA and is worth the drive.

For skiers, Silver Mountain is some 25 miles east up I-90 to the base of the world's longest gondola. North some 50 miles along highway 95 is Schweitzer Basin, featuring spectacular views of the most impressive body of water you have never heard of--Lake Pend Oreille. The CDA Visitors Bureau can help you find transportation. The CDA Resort also features a heart-warming holiday lighting display and a boat ride to a huge lighted tree and Santa's village across the lake.

The neighborhood is the most sought-after location because of its proximity to everything Coeur d'Alene. Originally it was the site of Fort Sherman that was established in 1878 to protect settlers. Nearby Coeur d'Alene City grew up at the edge of the fort which was eventually disbanded and subdivided. The 'Fort Grounds' thereby became one of Coeur d'Alene's first residential areas and remains, as a consequence, at the center of all the attractions. The Lake and City Beach are just up the street. The park is one block, the resort and dowtown four. Many small shops with sidewalk cafes and bistros characterize the downtown, a pleasant walk in itself. Every culinary taste and wallet is served from 5 star fine dining at Beverlys to the world famous Hudson's Hamburgers. Of course, you name the fresh water sport and it is close at hand from dinner cruises to jet skis. You can also nature hike on nearby Tubbs Hill which is bounded on three sides by the Lake.

Other Activities: Dinner and sight-seeing cruises, sidewalk cafes, Floating Boardwalk

We have a High chair/booster seat combination that can be attached to a kitchen chair and 2 other booster seats. Children's dishes and a portable crib\playpen are also available. All three TV's are cable. There is a basement gameroom for the kids with TV, foosball, Wii, boardgames, and toys. The Main TV is in the back first floor Den and another TV with Broadband and WiFi is in the front sun room. The governing philosophy is that there needs to be a TV for the men, for the women, and for the kids.

Perfect accomodation!

We are two families who came together to play at Silverwood. There are 10 of us altogether, and this was the PERFECT place for us to get together! The house was everything it promised to be---lots of space for the kids to play, room for the adults to play games, and lots of sleeping space, and the kitchen was fully stocked so we could eat at "home". We've found a new way to vacation--much better than a hotel!

The house itself was so beautiful! The kids loved getting to practice on the baby grand (yes, I did make them bring their books on vacation!). The dining table was large enough to seat all of us. The family photos made us feel like we are guests in their home. Overall, this was one of our best vacations we have taken together--and we've been doing this for 20 years!

Owner's Response: The Gumprecht family thanks you for the kind words. We are glad that sharing our family home allows us to enjoy it for ourselves as well.

Our family of five children, two spouses, one grandchild and a sister had a delightful four day stay at The Doctor's Inn, enjoying the family photos, spacious rooms, and very comfortable setting. Extended family joined us for evening meals and a wonderful time was had by all. Thank you for opening your home for our use. It was exactly as advertised, clean, and easy to enjoy. This was our first experience with VRBO and we don't want to stay in a hotel ever again! The easy access to the beach, park, and the centennial trail made for nice morning jogs and afternoon bike rides. Downtown CdA is a quick stroll across the park.
